I think when LGR does his "Sierra Historia" it should be a joint venture with MJR , at minimum a cameo knowing MJR's Sierra connection. LGR and MJR would be the KZfaq equivalent of the WWE Mega Powers. It would explode the minds of the humanoid KZfaq masses.

I love how the game draws in the graphics with each screen. It's probably a technical limitation, but that's really neat.

Grey Bryson It's proceduraly generated to save space, most of those backdrops could easily be created with, for example. a single QBasic DRAW command.
@-taz-
@-taz- 9 жыл бұрын
Bastet Furry It's just vectors with flood fills. Because with 256kb of RAM there wasn't enough room for an off screen buffer. Also, they halved the horizontal resolution of the zbuffer, the hidden screen which indicates what objects you can walk in front of or behind. That makes the games REALLY low res with double wide pixels. Even though it's pretty clever, there are better ways to do it. It's just that they were in a huge hurry because... well... companies are always in a hurry! They never give us enough time to do anything right.

Grey Bryson It reminds me of Graphics Magician which I had for my Apple //e. I don't think there was a PC version. It was a graphics editor designed for graphic adventure games. Instead of saving the individual images, it saved the steps to create the image on screen - taking a fraction of the space a saved image would take. It would draw the image onscreen like what you see in the video. It was a neat program to play with.

One of my best memories is playing KQ as child and then playing the KQ remake years later. I remembered walking onto a screen in the remake which was redrawn from it's oriignal version. The redrawn screen was missing something mundane like a big rock. I remember being SHOCKED by the fact that the rock was gone because, in my imagination, as a kid, that rock was incredibly important. I had tried to solve puzzles using that rock. I had tried to lift that rock. I had tried to roll that rock. I had, in my imagination, given the rock height, width, depth, and significance. The fact that is twas just GONE underscored how much of Daventry existed purely in my imagination. I think THAT'S the thing that modern games miss.

You've described wonderfully what I totally agree with: Much of the old gaming experience was adding your own meaning and imagination to things. You had to invent a part of the game in your mind and that made certain games become a very personal experience. I too miss that time.

That box looks like an oversized audio cassette case! I guess IBM thought their traditional 3-ring binders would be too "formal" for a game, and a regular cardboard box would be too cheap -- so they invented something new, and then seemingly never used it again!

I played through King's Quest for the first time thanks to the humble sierra strikes back bundle. I went through it with the idea of playing all 7 of the original games in their original versions. King's Quest III was one of the very first PC games I ever played as a child, and one that showed me just how intricate gaming could be at the time. While over the years I gravitated more towards Sierra's other series, like Space Quest and Gabriel Knight, the King's Quest series always retained a certain charm about them. Smashing review, Clint :D A great history lesson and walk down memory lane.

Before this game, all we had was Jumpman, pacman and space invaders. I played this game on a green monochrome 4MHz PC till Amiga 500 came later on and brought affordable colour to our life. EGA cards and colour monitors were way too expensive. Even with a monochrome monitor it was amazing. All your progress depended on the condition of 5.25 diskette.

Let me explain, “we” refers to me and my friends which obviously excludes you. And no, “we” (friends and me) didn’t have commodore since it was not so popular “here”’(my country). By 1988 AMIGA and ATARI ST was popular and “we” (the friends and me version) preferred over everything else.We (friends and me) also went for a common system to exchange games.

Sierra's desire to kill or soft lock the player worked really well for their earlier, shorter games - they felt like rogue-lites, lol. Well, I didn't mind it in Space Quests and Quest for Glory either, but just because I knew Sierra already, so I saved often, and to different slots.

I like that you mentioned the AGDI remake because it, and the other remakes they did, deserve as much attention as possible. I never knew there was a difference between any of the versions of the game, aside from the remakes and console port. Interesting to say the least. I'm very glad that Sierra didn't go kaput back then as well because they deserved everything that they accomplished... at least up until Mask of Eternity. I also never knew that you could charm the leprechauns with the fiddle; I always used the clover to dispatch them.

There is something so special (at least for me) about this blue screen that most people may not notice. The King Edward and inventory "Blue Screen" was pleasant to look at "and" listen to. If you listen closely (it probably only happens if the PCjr is running the game) you hear two special humming sounds. One is for the text materializing on the screen, and the other is for the blue screen display. It starts with the text "writing hum" and then switches to a different hum after it finishes writing the text. Ahhh, so soothing. I also love the river sounds in this game. It may just sound like TV static to some people, but I can tell that the developers meant for it to sound like water currents. Something about that stuff really draws me in.

Wow, I know this game sold well and it was most likely probably a showcase game ... but how could they not place in game screenshots on the back? With years where we had pre-rendered screens and stuff as actual gameplay footage we had a small window here, specifically, where something like this would have literally been revolutionary. Like I said, I know it sold well but I can't help but feel like it would have sold WAAAYYY more if IBM had abandoned their stock design here for once...
@jesuszamora6949
@jesuszamora6949 8 жыл бұрын
+LanIost Well, as LGR himself says, the IBM PC and PCjr versions were a complete commercial failure, because people played their computer games on C64 and Apple II. The game didn't really succeed until the Tandy 1000 and Apple 2C came out. Not that I'm surprised. Poor box art + computer not really considered a gaming platform = fail. However, this is just another example of how sheer dumb luck can play a role in people's lives. If the Tandy 1000 and Apple 2C hadn't come out until AFTER Sierra closed down, an entire era of graphical adventure games wouldn't have happened at all.

Dentenshi Reignhart And how about: Heroine's Quest? Tale of Two Kingdoms? The AGDI Kings Quest remakes? Their Quest for Glory 2 remake? Peasants Quest? Mages Initiation is on the way. As is Order of the Throne. Isn't that right Infamous Quests ?

I had this exact version for the pc jr. Classic. Police quest and space quest. Lots of simple puzzle solving fun.

In late 2013, my then Flappy Bird and Minecraft obsessed 9 year old was in a house in Minecraft, and it had a picture of Sir Graham on the wall. After my explaining the picture, he and I then played a fun game of how to score 159 out of 158 in King's Quest (Roberta Williams Anthology running through DOSBox). He still refers to it as a great classic game.

Typing in commands is so enjoyable in the King's Quest games! It gives the illusion that you could do just about anything in the game even though most phrases would just get a response like "I can't do that." or "I don't understand.". Regardless, it's just really amusing to type in things like "eat witch blob". Haha!

As far i know, The CGA version of king quest it's one of that games that exploit the crappy composite output to generate more colors. If you got an original ibm CGA card, you should try plugging it on a tv to see it.

I first played this game on the sega master system as a kid. Since I did not understand english at the time, I can't say that I have good memory of it. But I was still very impress by it's style and how mysterious this game was.

The PC Jr was my earliest exposure to computers, and possibly the oldest games I ever tried too.

I absolutely loved the King's Quest series. The first one I played was King's Quest IV and I still consider it my second favorite game of all time (the first being The Legend of Zelda for the Nintendo Entertainment System)

Loved playing on the PC Jr. My favorite was Jumpman. My dad taught me how to use a hex editor (Norton Utilities I think) to change the names of the level title screens.

Ah King's Quest, my sibs and I loved you so much. We had big maps stuck on the wall drawn on computer paper with the holes down the sides. And that moment we figured out you could walk just a pixel below the screen and you wouldn't get hurt or fall in any rivers or anything. Man, we felt cool.

I first seen this game on a Tandy computer in Radio Shack. I was extremely impressed by the graphics. I had never seen a game that looked so realistic!

While this wasn't the first game I ever played, it was the first game that made me get into programming as a kid. I was 5, and it always makes me smile to see Sir Graham live again.

I always had a great respect for Roberta. She really was brilliant when it came to those darn Kings Quest games. She also looked kind of cute when she was young.
