"I don't believe him": James O'Brien's damning verdict of Rishi Sunak's LBC phone-in

James O'Brien reacts to Rishi Sunak's exclusive LBC phone-in.
Sunak fielded calls from listeners on a range of topics, ranging from how the Tories will help young renters to how the PM plans to fix the NHS.
The Prime Minister also refused to rule out letting Nigel Farage into the Tory party, apologised about failures regarding housing and defended taking cash from Tory donor, Frank Hester.
However, James wonders what Sunak still has left in his election arsenal.
"It seems to me that Rwanda is all he's got left now, and most people can see that's a busted flush," James states.

Found Sunak utterly insincere. He never engaged and empathised with what callers were saying. The responses were barely related to the topics and were not reactive. Food banks going from 30 to over 1200. Talks about tax cuts and get side tracked with Nick about his coat. Starmer on the other hand for the most part engaged with the caller, empathised, listened, reacted and talked in detail about his record, the plans and ambition for the future. Even if he disagreed with the caller he engaged with the question and with their concerns.

Starmer's contradictions and endless U Turns are his achillies heel that give the impression it's temporary politically driven and not based in any substance. But the Labour leader connects better on a one to one and personal Level. Sunak is a finance man and was correct and opposed Truss on her spending plans in the Tory leadership. The PM was behind various furlough and benefit payment schemes. But he lacks the common touch of Starmer publicly

@@StuartRussell-ul5rx I’m probably in the minority on this I think he has very firm core beliefs but they are just routed in pragmatism. I listened to his biography(friendly admittedly) and his whole life is characterised by struggling against barriers to opportunity and overcoming them. Whether that’s his state school becoming private while he was there. Seeing how his father wasn’t respected because of his profession. Feeling like he had to hide is accent to become a lawyer. Representing people fighting discrimination or large corporations. He wants to change the things that hold working class people back the most. Farage has taken on board the Trump playbook in full, and it's no secret that he hobnobs with Trump's shady advisors and possibly his billionaire hard right backers. Farage is pursuing a white nationalist populist agenda that is pure Trumpism, thinking that there are as many gullible and frankly unreasoning people inclined to easily believe a package of lies as a percentage of the nation in the UK as Trump relied on in the USA. Trump used this fanbase to take over the Republican Party, just as Farage plans to take over whatever is left of the Tory party after they are demolished by a furious electorate on 4th July.

Sunak's problem is that he never actually "had a plan" - he's been constantly making up half-baked marketing re-launches. Had he entered the office with a plan to govern the country and focused on that primarily I think we would be in a different position - although he did get handed a lot of baggage. Instead he decided to try and be the "change" candidate and then kept rebooting over and over again - he's still doing it now! He's constantly looking for the quick-fix which has put him in significant trouble. His other problem is that he decided to be on a platform about immigration at a time when immigration is the highest it has ever been - making it *incredibly* easy for the hard-right to hit him for it.

The party which ended up being led by Boris who broke the very rules he created and then the Rwanda Bill which itself breaks international law. If he was a leader of any quality he would have stood up to his party, actually led and told his party this policy was wrong. Yes you are right, he is developing policy with the gallery, not because believes it but because that is the policy that will keep him in the top job (at least until the election when the voters will punish him)

Issues with Sunak: - He represents the conservative party which have been awful for most of the 14 years. - Lack of accountability from the conservative party for the mess the country is currently in. E.g. inflation was caused as much by Truss than it was by world events. - We hear more about what other parties can't do and not enough about what the Conservatives can do and the successes they've had in the past 14 years. - The lack of honesty in whats promoted to the public... BBC verify seem to be fact checking the conservatives as much as Trump these days.

I saw a recent poll that 69% had said Johnson was the worst PM but only 2% said Sunak so yes part of what you say is true he is being punished for what came before but he is still pretty awful the worst thing for me is his arrogance, entitlement, and lack of grasp on the reality most of us have to live!

James obrien thinks he’s smart. I’m not smart and I can see the problems in this country. Why do a Romanian from eons away that dosnt speak a single English and choose to cycle to work can get a job straight away on site. Me as a City & Guilds level 2 plumbing graduate, with hands on experience on site, and speaks fluent English with no accent don’t even get a job. I honestly don’t know what going on. My generation are being ignored whilst the rest are getting their best. We need to stop privatisation so the people and the students future of this nation are progressive, rather than how much money you make for that particular company.

@Stoic-grimace. Why did he want the job ? Because in the world of the super-rich where everybody has everything - and they are all snobs - it brought huge distinction to his family. No-one else could say they had a son/brother/ cousin who had once led the British government, in close partnership with the King. It’s Kudos like no other.

He should have definitely ditched the Rwanda plan. It was a terrible plan which cost far too much money for too little reward. That money should have been used to work with France to process people there and process people here. Part is the issue is that we're not processing people and that's why they're stuck in hotels.

What Sunak's success actually represents is a great example of the "benefits and power" of the British class system. Send your child to Winchester or, even better, Eton and it won't matter how morally or intellectually vacuous they turn out to be, the doors to the highest offices in the land will always be open to them.

There should have been less bias in the question Starmer/Sunak rather than just Nick Ferrari the vocal Tory apologist, he pressed Starmer on every little detail and kept interupting him and then with Sunak you might aswell have a live camera in the corner of them playing footsie under the desk. In the future for fairness sake either have Ferrari question Sunak and O'Brien question Starmer or vice versa.
