The Deputy Leader of the Labour party was brought up by a parent who could not read or write. After getting pregnant and leaving school aged 16, Angela Rayner became a home carer where she found her feet as a union representative, eventually rising to be Unison’s most senior official in the North West. Now she’s taking on the government over workers’ rights and cronyism; her battles no longer fought on the estate she grew up on, but from across the despatch box.

Angela and I were in the same class at secondary school. I spent most of my teenage years on the estate where she’s from so I know some about her early life. It’d be remarkable enough had she become merely a functioning adult who manages to get by. What she’s been able to achieve from where she started is mind blowing.

What a breath of fresh air is Angela Rayner in this conversation, full of lived experiences of ordinary folk. Half way through when she talks about time spent being helped by Home Start as a young single mum is wow! Also how she became a home help and the reasons behind it. I'd urge all mums to give this a listen..its an hr long, I watched in 2 x half hrs but 10 mins bursts while doing the dishes, prepping the tea, if that works best for you. We need people who understand daily life helping to run the country. Also Tories do not understand how this country actually gets to run. Totally clueless. They should be more like Michael Portillo who spent his weeks benefit in 1 day while doing a programme on social security because he didn't realise it should last the week but has gone round the whole country looking at how things work etc. At least he has tried to understand things.

Starmer seems obsessed with focus groups and not doing anything that voters might seem to dislike. It's a strategy, sure, but politics is also about changing hearts and minds, bringing people over to your side with powerful arguments and a relatable personality. It's a trait Starmer and Sunak both lack, the difference is that Starmer seems self aware enough to know it. I see Angela filling that role very well.

I have two degrees, attended one of our finest universities, and two children ( in wedlock) and most people would say I've done quite well for myself. I know exactly what it takes to get out of a poor, background. I am so glad this interview came up in my list. It's such a shame that the Tory Media have it in for her and have managed to publish their nasty stories (Lies) about her just because she does stand up to them and her Tory opponents and doesn't let them bully her. She has massively gone up in my estimation through this interview. She is an inspiration. If more people, who are feeling downtrodden and in despair, because of what the Tories have done to our country and public services over the last 13 years, saw this interview they would find someone who is an ally. Someone, who is willing to stand up and fight to get back what the Tories have got rid of. The Sure Start scheme was one of the best initiatives that ever existed. It did so much to help communities and young struggling families to break the vicious circles of poverty & deprivation, as Angela herself says, that if it hadn't been there when she needed them then she wouldn't be in Parliament today and she would have just perpetuated the same mistakes on her own children. We must get the nasty vicious Tories out at the next election and get a government in that will bring vital services (Like Sure Start & Local gov Home Care services) back and never allow the Tories back in to destroy them ever again.

She is doing a great job of 'biding her time' and keeping her head down under the Starmer regime, clearly the only reason she has survived the purge of the left by Smarmer is because she is the ELECTED deputy leader and Tory Starmer can't sack her, yet, but I have no doubt that her 'card has been marked' she sounds way too much like Mr Corbyn, and that sort of behaviour is no longer tolerated in the brave new Labour party.

@@willcampbell8829 her upbringing shapes her principals as it does for the rest of us. From poverty or not, she was being truthful, that's the difference. She is speaking from the heart here which is something that we do not see from her opposition. The issue you have chosen to focus on is quite a minor issue with what is currently being done to this country. Would you rather have the current lot that can't speak a word of truth ever and are just spokespeople for the corporations that pay them? Or someone that has memories of poverty and is able to speak about them honestly. Dude she even tells you how her upbringing has shaped her principals. I can't see why you would be anything other than happy to see someone in power being truthful instead of picking on a policy which is adding to peoples rights as if it's somehow a threat to women. Baffling
