Keir Starmer's first cabinet has been described as 'the most diverse on record for education background', contrasting the last Tory cabinet which was made up mostly of those coming from the public school circle.
Carol Vorderman hears from these callers on how they feel about Labour having the most state school-educated ministers in its cabinet.
1:27 - Caller Jawwad hits out at 'out of touch posh boys' in previous governments, and says 'if you're paying thousands of pounds to fill up your swimming pool, of course you don't care if energy bills rise.'
4:55 - Caller Carl disagrees with Jawwad and says it's more about 'advantage' rather than privilege', and then goes on to say that the 'North-South divide is a myth' in his books.
5:15 - Carol Vorderman and Carl have a back and forth, with Carl insisting that those in the North have 'superior income, cheaper housing, less children in classes, better NHS access, and cost of living is much cheaper'.
9:55 - Caller Lorraine, a former head teacher, tells Carol Vorderman: 'I am absolutely delighted the posh boys are out'.

The youth are and have always been a potential pool of political engagement. Issue is that both intergenerational biases and media cynicism keeps them from shining and that goes double for working class youth. Kids are more politically engaged and informed than I was at their age but for some reason my own generation (millenials) and older all want to keep them as jaded and held down as we were before. Cycles of opression in all forms need to be broken, even the ones like this that don't get highlighted as often.

Caller from the South - "Hey people in the North - you have it so great!" The North of England has been left behind for so long - I say that as someone from Scotland who works across the UK. While I don't agree with how he's trying to put the point across.... and a lot of the South is more affluent than most of the rest of the country, there are some areas that are amongst the most deprived in the country and get pooh-poohed simply because of geography. The new Govt has a lot to do to redress the past 14 years and build a trust and belief in Govt that has particularly been malignantly dismantled and destroyed at the breakneck speed of the last few years since the clown got his greedy grubby mitts on the keys to no10, this malignant behaviour unfortunately didn't follow him out of the door.

Northerners have more disposable income than southerners? This is NOT TRUE. Costs might be lower, but so are salaries. In the North south "competition" mentioned by the 2nd caller, the north is losing. Unfair especially as it was the north that produced the wealth derived from industrialisation, but they are still suffering due to higher air pollution. Edinburgh is wealthy. @@craigdoc6656 I remember in the early seventies talking to a man from Essex who's house had cost him £77,000.00 and I lived oop north and I had paid £7,750.00 for mine in North Lincolnshire. I was earning around £90.00 a week, putting in an average 55 to 60 hours a week, going to work to get enough money to go to work the next week. I couldn't afford to save anything. I thought I had a hard time, but things are much worse now, thanks to the last shower in government.

The Tories were recently gloating about how marvelous our education system is. It's falling to bits, literally, in front of our eyes. Pity only VAT is being imposed on private schools, removal of full charitable status should be the goal. Another way of getting a lot more revenue is to restrict the tax relief on pension contributions to the basic rate of tax.

I would suggest anyone who thinks like Carl should come to my hometown of Kingston upon Hull, which has been neglected for the whole of the last Tory government, from everything from transport to education to infrastructure, it's heartbreaking to see, I can't even shop in my hometown because there are no shops except the very basic ones. It's a great city, full of strong northern, passionate, caring people, but we deserve better, far better, especially the thousands of children who live in abject food poverty and poverty in general and I think Carl should come up for a visit sometime to see the reality of what 14 years of Tory neglect looks like!

The young man who called in first really hit home with myself as a young adult. We’ve been massively let down. It’s hard to not be disillusioned by the state of the world we’re inheriting from the previous generations. By the prospects of our future and how it is this way by malicious design. I usually joke about my only financial mistake in life being not buying a property in 2004, when I was 6 years old. But there’s a nugget of truth in that joke. The Tory government have, as many other governments have across the world, pulled up the ladder on younger generations and just told them to figure it out. We’re facing a multitude of generational crises and unfortunately, some governments have chosen to serve themselves instead of guiding us forward. I sincerely hope the Labour government can help the youth of the UK to get better footing in life.
