I believe it's pretty well understood President Johnson knew how to get things done. Perhaps in some things he was to proficient in getting things done. However this trip to the woodshed for Congressman Adam Clayton Powell serves as a simple example of how his connect with congress elevated him over the years to the level of a master politician. No doubt there is no one comparable or even close who could master this influence and fear in congress today. Love him or hate him his mastering art of congressional relations and on the job control may never be equaled. Praise him or hate him but his type of leadership is a prime example of what is needed in Washington today!

Here's LBJ reading the Harlem congressman the Riot Act for not reporting out the landmark Elementary and Secondary Education Bill of 1965. Powell had been on the lam, down in Puerto Rico, evading a Congressional investigation into his alleged mishandling of his Educational Committee's expense account. Powell was an old Johnson ally who supported him over Kennedy at the 1960 DNC The guy speaking with Powell at first is Jack Valenti, future president of the Motion Picture Association of America.

Powell was smoothing over Valenti, but the "Smoothing" ended when Johnson got the phone and chewed him a new one.

Damn, LBJ is a guy who knows how to get things done. If Obama was half the man Johnson was he'd have immigration and campaign finance reform fixed in his first term.
