This second video on a series of 3 shows the teardown of this vertical gyro. A power up is also performed. Next video will show the method I have used to find the way to connect this gyro to an attitude indicator.

glad it's at startup that the most critical sequence is happening when you still on solid ground and not at 30000 feet, there's a lot of crazy wobble in there

Stellar Vids! and in Great detail! I believe this one had been "dropped" or damaged, should not "wobble" coming up to speed. but hey, Still cool to be able to play around with these unique units. I have a Bendix VG from a 737. I used to Love, and Hate (bitter sweet) working on these back in the day but relished the compliments from the Captain and FO when everything was DNO

I've been playing with things like this for a while and am now in the process of bringing up a gyro IMU, the ASN-109. I have done extensive reverse engineering and have the platform operating. Currently I am building an electronic display using synchro to digital converter blocks. The matching display is unobtanium. In your unit, the electronics is used to level ("erect") the platform. Those glass capsules are electrolytic cells and sense gravity to determine a level condition, then the electronics apply torques to the synchro motors in the gimbals to make it level out over time. My unit needed 3 phase 400 Hz and it took some time to find a reasonably sized inverter. I do have a 1200 pound monster which will create tens of kVA but finally found a smaller unit.

No way. Physical gyros are fragile and have bearings and gimbals that wear and mechanical instruments require fancy clockwork with flags that stick. Give me solid state ring laser gyros and a glass cockpit any day-especially when you can have one that includes a complete Attitude Heading Reference System and Air Data Computer as well as a GPS that fits in a standard instrument hole. Worst thing is usually a flag that goes away on its own by cycling power.

Are these mechanical gyroscopes still in use? As per today, every smartphone has a miniature gyroscope on a chip, build in, that workes super reliably, consumes hardly any power. Plus gyroscopes are now only a backup solution in the aireplane, beside the primary use of GPS and GLONAS. I would think, we can easily get rid of mech. gyroscopes. Or is there something, I don't understand?
@bradw3116
@bradw3116 4 ай бұрын
Modern aircraft still use gyros as a primary means of navigation within an inertial reference system. Modern gyros are LASER ring instead of using a spinning mass. The ADIRU/IRS are coupled with a GNSS systems to provide hybridised data for navigation.

Yes, you can see examples at 3:25 They rub against each other along the centreline of a spinning axis, to minimise their friction effect on the moving mechanism, due to a near zero leverage at that friction point.

3:50 Air bubble sensors inside, I guess they must only work when the plane is on the ground. Otherwise, the sensors would be useless if the plane entered turbulence and started to fall.
@lelabodemichel5162
@lelabodemichel5162 4 ай бұрын
They work all the time to keep the verticality, otherwise the gyro is useless. All gyros need to be disciplined because of their inherent drift. There is no reason that these sensors fail, inside there is a kind of electrolytic solution which permit to have a variable resistance according to the verticality.

Why does it wobble at startup?
@lelabodemichel5162
@lelabodemichel5162 5 күн бұрын
This is due to the regulation of the verticality. The verticality is regulated using two gravity sensors and two torque motors, one for each gimbal. At the beginning, when the speed of the rotor is not high, the torque motors provide large effect on the gimbals. This effect becomes less and less important when the speed of the rotor increases, that is to say when the rotor rigidity increases.

@meepferret
@meepferret 7 ай бұрын
@@lelabodemichel5162 My guess: the 2 mercury switches are used to zero-align/initialize the system but the plane must be very still on the ground for doing that, thus the sealed set-screw on the assembly. Long ago I wanted to use a mercury switch to sense angle (roll/pitch by gravity) but centrifugal force interferes with that when in motion, even just swaying.
