Piece from the movie: Le Roi Danse (The King is Dancing)
Some Info:
Jean-Baptiste Lully (1632-1687)
Italian-born composer (French nationality from 1681). Entered service of Louis XIV 1653, composed instrumental music for the court ballets. From 1664 collaborated with Molière in series of comedy-ballets which were forerunners of French opera, the last and most famous being Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme, in which Lully danced role of the Mufti.
Having assimilated both Italian and French styles and tastes, from 1673 he turned to opera composition and obtained from the King exclusive rights to arrange operatic performances in Paris.
His death was caused by a gangrenous abscess which formed in his foot after he struck it with the long staff he used for beating time on the floor while conducting a Te Deum to celebrate Louis XIV's recovery from illness.

A mi me encanta Lully. Comparto totalmente el comentario anterior, pero separemos aguas, porque la música de esa época, para mi, ha sido la música mas bella que he oído. Es curioso que en una época con tantas asperezas económicas y policías haya tenido una música tan bella.

История создания этого смешного марша турок такова -во время приёма в Версале посла из Турции ,костюм Людовика 14 был украшен бриллиантами на несколько миллионов ливров .А посол Турции заметил что на лошади турецкого султана бриллиантов было больше чем на короле Франции. Тогда Людовик приказал Люлли высмеять турецкого посла , поэтому и был придуман этот шутливый турецкий марш

@FoersterX the scene is making fun of the naivety of a middle class man who dreams to become an aristocrat. He refuses his daughter to marry a commoner, who disguises himself as the son of the Turkish Sultan, in order to get his approval. He organizes a 'turkish ceremony' to knight the merchant, who is getting overexcited about it. That s 17th century humour poorly rendered by this crappy movie. At that tine, aristocrats loved to joke about pretentious new rich merchants.

Nous sommes durant le début du règne du roi Louis XIV , et à cette époque le roi aimait la paix civile , puis vint une autre époque pour laquelle le roi fit la guerre envers une élite dissidente à sa propre confession catholique ( la Réforme ) puis aux Etats proches en Allemagne ( Palatinat .. ) et Hollande .. Les caisses de l'Etat furent alors durablement vidées ..

@dutour25 en fait c'était pas un ambassadeur mais simplement un marchand et même pas de haute envergure. C'est d'ailleurs de la qu'est parti toute l'histoire car Versailles n'avait pas compris cette subtilité et avait préparé des festivités digne d'un ambassadeur. Pour ne pas perdre la face et jeter des perles aux porceaux, l'astuce fut de tourner la chose au ridicule.

Je croix que la fin de cette piece etait une insulte ouverte et grave, dirigé a l'empire ottomane, dès lorsque les "insultes" a etait directés au roi soleil par l'ambassadeur ottomane. Ca n'etait pas attendu que Moliere avait l'intention a se moqué vers l'empire ottomane, enfin parce que l'empire ottomane était allié avec la france pour plusieurs de temps. Parce que c'etait déplacé et vraiment choquant a faire cette moquerie, le roi et le public rigoler d'un air incredule mais enjoué. Cette moquerie est caché et perpetué par l'intrigue qui est orienté a la société bourgeois, et c'est ambigu. lorsque c'est le stupidité du protagoniste dont on ri ou sa commence, mais c'est plus drole par comment les acteurs comportent qu'on rigole a la situation--ou on decrit "mouhamet!" et la balancement d'un sabre au protagoniste chacuns des fois. Moliere soit reconnu avec genie par son style. on peut voir le genie de son style dans ses autres piece. excuse mon francais et ma grammaire, mais ce n'est pas ma premiere langue et j'espere que c'est un peu sensé la.

Because Louis XIV asked Lully and Molière to avenge himself against the turkish ambassador who had misbehaved by composing " a ceremony with a ridiculous turk", which they did.

Comprendamos que el sentido del humor de la época era probablemente distinto, las sensibilidades cambian con el tiempo. Pero también esta escena carece de contexto, Recordemos que todo esto es una farsa creada por la hija de Monsieur Jourdain, Lucile, y su pretendiente, Cleonte, ya que Jourdain quería, por sobre todas las cosas, ser un noble, y casar a su hija con un noble, cosa que Cleonte no era. Cleonte decide armar una farsa, por lo que se hace pasar por el "Hijo del Gran turco" y pedir la mano de Lucile. Aquí, un lacayo de Cleonte y unos actores hacen pasar por turcos y convierten a Monsieur Jourdain en un "Paladín", para que luego Cleonte se pueda casar con Lucile.

It was funny because King Louis asked Moliere and Lully to make a play mocking the Turkish ambassador who misbehaved in his court; a middle class man who wants to be an aristocrat, refuses to let his daughter to marry commoners then thinks he was some son of a Sultan, arranged a ceremony.
