Pour avoir assisté hier samedi 8 octobre 2022 à un concert en l'Abbaye du Thoronet ( var, france) qui fût une pure merveille, je ne peux qu'admirer le travail musical de M.Marcel Peres et de son ensemble Organum, certainement une des meilleures références mondiale en la matière. Merci infiniment.

Fascinating! These pre-Gregorian chants sound very Eastern, and the rhythms were evidently perpetuated by the Eastern Churches following the creation of a recognisably Latin chant.

Of course they do... this is what was pre-schism... when the church was one... before the Catholics decided they had it right and all the others had it wrong....

Yes I agree. I have noted elsewhere that a lot of early music reminds me of Middle Eastern music. It is certainly very atmospheric and must have been quite wonderful to hear in some of the astonishing buildings of those tiimes.

Yes... the idea of god did inspire gregorian and byzantine chant... not the reality...since we have NO good convincing evidence that any gods exist.

Le saint concile n'est pas hérétique: un concile ne peut pas être hérétique, bien que les personnes qui le mettent en oeuvre après puissent l'être..! Il faut considérer le concile en continuité avec la tradition (fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beno%C3%AEt_XVI).

Je suis né et j'habite à Ravenne, j'ai la chance de voir ces mosaïques quand je veux, et je dois dire qu'ils sont une vraie et grande expression de la Foi Chrétienne. J'amerai beaucoup d'écouter cette musique dans cettes basiliques chaque Dimanche!

The echo of Faith is deeper than Faith itself, I think: hope without destination or end. And this eternity is what we hear in the earliest sacred music. Though words may enhance their effect, it's audible as well to people who don't know Latin. Then too, as time passes here below, the language of music slowly contorts into radically different idioms, a process that begins with plain chant, bare and pure. Soon enough, a drone is added, a fifth appears, later strong meter, suggesting dance, polyphony, harmony, until at last the modal system coagulates into simple-minded major and minor. This, for me, is the secular threshold after which only sacred words are left. Even Bach is modern then while Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven's masses are echoes of an eternity that eludes their ears. We need no Faith to hear this story and lament the passing of fragile, mystic uncertainty and doubt. The Unmoved Mover does not move but music moves from note to note, moving us from phrase to phrase, era to era, as starlight reflects and refracts in still or even stormy waters. Here are the waves of a gentle sea, an encompassing ocean in which each of us is a note of starlight shining through the meditation of darkness. This is the voyage these touching singers bring to sound and light. Thankyou for sharing grave and noble insight.
