From a standing start, giving the Volare a 50 foot lead, a man running could probably catch it. OTOH, some of them had V-8's. I doubt that improved the cornering very much, though.

They dos the star trek/batman thing, tilt the camera to make the hill look steeper. You will notice the camera changes to close up as the car gose on the hill, so you can see the road below and how much the camera is tilted for the shot, 5-10 degrees

Pretty sure both cars in the main chase were Fords...the hero car was a wide-body Mustang with what sounds like an enhanced V8 and I THINK the villain car was a Ford Granada.

@@generalilbis The Aspen is not really known for the type of performance the Charger had in Bullitt, but the Mustang was from the same era as the '68 GT, so it would have had no problem chasing down the Aspen. According to an old Hot Rod Magazine article regarding the Bullitt chase, the stunt coordinator had to keep having the stuntman driver in the Charger (legendary stunt driver Bill Hickman) slow down because it had too much horsepower over the Mustang. I am sure it took lots of takes and stopping filming to film the Bullitt chase, but the one quick part where it was evident that the Charger was too fast for the Mustang was after the narrow curve and the road was downhill and straight for several blocks, the Charger was seen getting away from the Mustang.

I assume because the sequence, specifically the lurid fishtailing, required a reasonably powerful rear wheel drive car. The car also had to be reasonably large, heavy and strong to survive the treatment. In context, an American saloon is ideal. A Jaguar or BMW would have been expensive, a Peugeot or Volvo probably wouldn't have been powerful enough and the V8 Rovers weren't that common in France. They could have used a European Granada, perhaps, but the American Dodge fits the bill as well as anything. There's a Chrysler 180/200 in another scene, indicating that they, Chrysler, might have supplied vehicles for the film. There was no British built Chrysler available at the time that would have been suitable for the chase, so perhaps they donated an American import instead? Who knows?

@Ric O'Shai In France, this car was named "Chrysler" because Chrysler (Europe) bought the french manufacturer Simca. In France 3 versions were sold : 160, 180 and 2L (All In-line 4) The yellow one wasn't a 2L version because no long range headlights at the front. In spain a Diesel version also existed. This car has been then replaced by the Tagora when Peugeot bought Simca-Chrysler which was renamed "Talbot". The Chrysler has been rebranded for UK market under the name "Avenger" and Australian market under the name "Centura".

Yellow is a color used because of some requirements in Europe. It’s supposed to be easier on the eyes and reduce night blindness

@@Hipas_Account It should be interesting to inventory the versions of this car around the world and what engines they were equipped with. The French versions were underpowered (110HP max), the Avenger UK ridiculous with its 1.3 liter. The engine compartment is sized to accommodate a large engine of the type v6 or v8 (Chrysler?). I don't know what VW did with this car.

@@martialperrin7597 Mine is the 1.3 punching out about 56hp, id guess the VW ones, which were much newer would have had other engines from VW of Argentina. But yeah an inventory of each market, each brand and each car with which ever engines they came with, would be great.
