For intermediate and advanced learners of French, you want to know how and when to use the passé composé and the imparfait.
The past tenses in French can be complicated, and give us French learners a mal de tête !
When should you use the imparfait over the passé composé tense in French?
When should you choose the passé composé over the imparfect tense in French?
How do you decide which past tense in French to use?
In this video I talk about how to do just that, and also my tips for those of you who want to learn them both at once, as well as tricks to help you choose when you can't quite remember all the logic and rules I teach you in the main part of the video.

toujours - always (in the past)
normalement, d’habitude - usually
en général, généralement - in general, generally

un matin, un soir - one morning, one evening
toujours - always (and still now)
plusieurs fois - several times

Hi Alex, there is another use of the imparfait which is more literary but important to recognise. For example "en 1944 les Américains débarquaient en Normandie" Or another example: En 1939 M. Grévisse publiait le Précis de grammaire française. In spoken language one would expect the passé composé. I hope this is of interest to you. I'm a translator by profession and I see all sorts of intricate grammatical "oddities" in my work

Sir, This video has helped me understand the concept thoroughly. Just a small clarification... Whenever there is 'toujours', aren't we supposed to use imparfait as it is written differently in the description box.. Please correct me if I am wrong!

@@gowrimuguli5972 ah well that's different because you use the present tense. For past tense "toujours" you need imparfait because it was a habitual action that has now finished.
