It wouldn't. Like a conventional lift it has a set of pretty massive brakes.

Why do the two travelling locks not use each other as counterweights?

They have counterweights between the rails, each cable is 1480 meters long, you can see it moving at 1:18 just behind and under the lock. That way they can also work independently and have maintenance on each.

A question for the mathematicians, if the traveling lock weighs 300 Tons with water, and 4 boats weighing 10 Tons each enter the lock, how much does the lock now weigh? :-) See who has been paying attention.

Bonjour à tous, je ne connaissais pas, très impressionnant. Combien y a t'il de dénivelé? Je vais faire des recherches pour en savoir plus. C'est très beau. Je suis du sud de la France et j'ai été travailler à Charleroi, je crois que c'est tout près de Ronquières. Merci pour le partage!!
