Suite Francaise was shown on BBC2 under 2 weeks ago. For different reasons, I stumbled across Le Silence de la mer. I had never heard of the film Suite Francaise, the book nor Irène Némirovsky. Again, I had never heard of La Silence de la mer, this film (I am now aware of the 1949 version), the book nor Vercors (Jean Bruller). I have a lot of reading to do as well as watching the 1949 film. I thoroughly enjoyed your review. I tussled with this considerably and I am going to say it. I would describe Werner von Ebrennac as a German officer. The von as part of his surname, being a member of the army and his Iron Cross having no emblems etc. I agree with your take on his idealism and naivety. I would love to hear your review on Suite Francaise.

This was great! You should definitely review 'Suite Francaise', the story of the WWII 2012 film is very similar to The Silence of The Sea.

This sounds like something I need to watch and I gotta say the actress who plays the granddaughter reminds me quite a bit of a young Helena Bonham Carter, not identical but similar.

I may check this one out. I’ve watched several German war era films and overall enjoy them more than American war films (recommending “Das Boot” [of course] and “Unter Sandet” [“Land of Mine” is the english title]. I’m quite curious to see a French treatment of the topic/genre.

It’s bothersome when very smart people “apologize” for their poor French pronunciation (or any other lack of knowledge). You’re exceedingly intelligent. Learn a bit of French! Much of English is based on it. You are adept at learning, period. You watch a movie and understand it to its bare bones. That is not easy. You are doing something I couldn’t learn to do. That’s why I watch.
