@@misosoup2005 like Mimir said, I've had many moons to work it out, here my explanation : They can explain it by saying that Heimdall's horn is heard across space and time but Mimir specifically said that somebody called the serpent. Here's my best theory on it, back in God Of War 2018, Kratos was wondering why the serpent dropped him and Atreus near Thamur's corpse, that is a major hint that indicates that whoever talked to the serpent asked him to drop Kratos and his son at that location because that were Baldur landed after fighting with the son and Kratos needed to be there in order to fight Baldur and kill him to bring Fimbulwinter that'll lead to Ragnarök. I thought that maybe in thee first draft they were going to time travel but not in the traditional way of God Of War 2 or Back To The Future, because that breaks the laws of causality, they were going to do it like inHarry Potter 3 or Watchmen (the series), where what's happened already did, so I think that maybe the idea was that Kratos and Atreus start the game by trying to stop Ragnarök by preventing Baldur's death, but then they realize that they should bring about Ragnarök and go back in time to rectify that by asking the serpent to drop their past selves next to Baldur. This is a major departure and it would've changed the whole game (seeing how the story ended up being in God Of War Ragnarök), but I don't know maybe it was just a chapter that could've been cut. I'm a little bit bothered because Cory kept teasing fans who were asking him about this in the past 4 years, and he's still teasing people as we speak on Twitter about this exact question. Some people say that it was Baldur trying to lure out Kratos and Atreus, but if that's true, you can add it to one of the most disappointing reveals in entertainment history (the first one for me is how Nick Fury lost his eye in the MCU, and that's another discussion in itself). Also, Asgard wasn't impressive enough, they did cleverly address this by saying that the feeling of grandeur and bravado is reserved for mortals and the All Father doesn't need a big castle to reinforce his ego, but having Asgard as a small village is a far cry from what I was expecting. I think it's just the limitations of the ps4 hardware seeing how this is not a linear game. The ending was a bit rushed, I would've liked to see more tricks from Odin, not getting Mjölnir is a major disappoinment, the gameplay would've been much like the axe but it's a weapon with shock effect, but how cool would that have been, it's really disappointing where the only game where the player can wield Mjölnir is Assassin's Creed Valhalla. Another question is how are they going to transition Kratos into another mythology, I thought that Odin was going to escape and rally other gods against Kratos but I was mistaken. SMS is going to do another sci-fi game I think before returning to God Of War, and with the Amazon series coming up, it's not clear if it's going to be a part of the canon.

And the reason Kratos cries over the last mural isn’t just because he never imagined this future for himself, he cries because Faye painted over the mural of his death prophecy to show him as the rebuilder. That this future he never could have imagined was one that Faye wanted for him all along and prophecized for him because she truly believed he could be better. Think of it like reading a note from a loved one after they passed away about how much they loved you. That’s why he breaks down at the sight of it, like she’s speaking to him from beyond the grave, expressing her love and faith for him.

This is crazy, this also proves that Faye did indeed love Kratos and not just use him as so many people said. Ultimately she taught kratos to open his heart and fight for something else than vengance. Because of her Kratos survived, since she also visited him in his dreams and reminded him of everything she taught and told kratos. She also saw kratos as the rebuilder and saw a bright future for him which she placed in the last mural for kratos to see. Another reason why I believe Kratos had such a substantial/emotional reaction to the mural was due to what Odin said to him about how Kratos knows nothing of Godhood and was known by the people as only a destroyer in his homeland. I dont believe Odin had anything to do with Kratos emotional reaction to the mural. In fact Odins words were barley even a dot on the spectrum of what Kratos had already experienced and probably heard about himself before. It does however have EVERYTHING to do with "the god he used to be". In his vengeance, Kratos didn't just kill the Greek gods and destroy the pantheon. He basically destroyed Greece. Killing MILLIONS in the process of getting his revenge. Children, women, men and the old. Hence why he was so hard on Atreus when he killed Modi. Kratos knows what killing a god can bring. But when Kratos saw the mural, the weight on his shoulders of that guilt...It shook him. I don't think Kratos believed he would ever be able to somewhat correct his mistake. Of being anything other than a monster. Of being loved.

The fate sisters (Norns) from Norse myths not being able to modify fate and just being good at predicting people who don't change is actually a pretty cool thing if you compare it with the Greek Fates and compare it to Kratos' development In the past he did the impossible to find a way to change his destiny, supernatural forces and to obtain it he caused a lot of pain. In the present, instead of trying to force destiny to change because Kratos says so, Kratos changes his fate because he CHANGES as a person Old Kratos would have definitely suffered the fate predicted to him of being killed at ragnarok, but present Kratos has grown from his mistakes and that is what made him be able to find a happy ending

Odin was gonna lose no matter what. The true prophecy showed the fall of Asgard and the only trick left he had was completing the mask to get infinite knowledge but guess what? Kratos and Atreus had the mask. Technically speaking Thor and Odin should have needed to do the first move, not Kratos and his crew. If you stop to think about it they didnt really change since they started Ragnarok AND killed Heimdall. What you are saying would make sense if Kratos didnt go to war and kill heimdall but he still did. It shouldnt matter why you kill, not killing is what he needed to do to change. The fates say it best "he slays gods but now he feels bad for it?" Meaning its not about why you kill but its about the fact you shouldnt kill in the first place. The devs fucked up because heimdall is the one who should have been spared not Thor. Kratos spares Thor after killing Heimdall and even admits it "I came back to who I was". Than he spared Thor, but he should have spared them all, Heimdall, Thor, Odin... Also Thor "changed" right at the end after losing to Kratos but still got killed by Odin. So what about that? You dont really change to chsnge your fate then, since Thor still died, Odin didnt change. Kratos is protected by the Plot but not Thor and everyone else. You can argue Faye maybe died to let Kratos somehow live but still someone still has to die lmao. Some people dont seem to be allowed to change their fates even if they try everything.

@@IlNamelessKinglI Heimdall was spared though, until he threatened to kill Atreus. Kratos at that point couldn’t just let him go to follow through on his threat, nor could he risk calling his bluff. Thor got killed because everyone is just a tool to Odin, so Thor refusing to be used anymore, he was killed while weak and caught off guard. And Thor did change, but just because that’s what saved Kratos, that doesn’t mean it applies to everyone. Odin didn’t change because he never tried to, even in the face of death he still refused to at least try and change. And we still don’t know why Faye died, hopefully that gets answered. At the end of the day, it was about cause and affect, choices leading to consequences. Kratos opening his heart and changing saved his life somehow. Thor changing displeased Odin so he was killed for it. Odin caring little for his family caused Sif to convince Thor of the truth, along with help from Kratos. Refusing to change got him soul trapped, and killing Brok unnecessarily, got him killed by Sindri who actually cares for his family unlike Odin. I don’t know how Kratos changing saved him, because he had Thor beat, so the only thing I can think of is if continued the fight Odin would help Thor kill Kratos. Hopefully that too is explained.

@@IlNamelessKinglI According to mural, Kratos was supposed to die to Thor in front of Odin's lodge. Where Atreus would come up to him and be sad before joining Odin, probably by using the mask. They changed their fate because of how hard Atreus and subsequently Kratos tried to change Thor. If Atreus acted like Loki classic from myth, he would have tried to sow the seeds of discord among Thor and his family. Encouraged Thor falling off the bandwagon, then talked down on Thor for doing so. He could have tried to poison Thrud against her parents by saying they don't believe in her. Instead he chose to be really genuine actually. Trying to fix Thor's family. Instead of saying Thor and Sif don't believe in Thrud, he says HE believes in Thrud and offers to help her case to her mom. He tries to get Thor to do better for his family instead of ridicule him like he could have. Then finally Kratos saved himself by changing who he is. He wasn't a monster who killed without cause anymore. He moves to avoid killing if at all possible. And he saw an opportunity with Thor which changed his fate. And actually, Thrud and Thor took and reversed the place of Kratos and Atreus in the mural's prophecy. Thor died and Thrud was sad and ended up joining Kratos and Atreus, her enemies up until that point.

I think the line "Be better" which Kratos repeatedly instill towards Atreus in the first game really hits hard now. It's not Atreus being a better "God" above all else, it is also for Kratos to be a better man than he was before. For long Kratos was considered a peak antihero, a hate-fueled butcher who didn't care in the slightest how many innocents will die as a result of his vengeance. A being who could only slaughter others. And now, after we've seen him leaving his old ways behind, growing capable of compassion and standing up for others, and raising his son into a decent man who won't repeat mistakes of his old self - now Kratos is not just an iconic character, he's a great person whose story can inspire us to be better. Another point I think you might have overlooked is this: obviously the whole point of the story is “change you fate by BEING BETTER (and therefore making choices different than who you were)”. Not only did Kratos decided to be better, he inspired so many others to be better. The son decided to NOT look for the answer in the end, Freya decided to NOT let revenge and hatred bond her anymore, Thor decided to NOT being a destroyer right before Odin killed him, and more. Everyone that got inspired by Kratos’s “being better” ends up with a outcome that is different than their “fate”, Kratos didn’t die, Son didn’t become the second hand of Odin, Thor died (but as a better outcome as opposed to keep being a killer). However, right until the Asgard War, even though Kratos was indeed trying to be better, it was not enough to change his “fate”, everything still unfolded the way they were predicted. It was at the EXACT moment when he told Atreus that “I was wrong, open your heart to their suffering”, that his effort finally was enough to change his “fate”. Because that’s the moment he finally transformed in his heart from a God that couldn’t care less about mortals to someone who can love the mortals, a real god if you will. And the even more beautiful point is that, the key for Kratos went down this different path as a rebuilder, is because Faye taught him to “BE BETTER” and “OPEN YOUR HEART”, which planted the seed for changes to begin with. The consistency really made the story a god-tier one.

@@proximityclockworkx1572 sadly yes, although this still fits in what I said here: Sindri’s whole loss is mostly caused by Atreus’s tendency of “wanting to look for answer no matter the cause”, which is the key property that drives his “fate”. Finding “who Loki is” “what happened to the giants” “the answer to divert his father’s seemingly fixed death”, all these were his characteristic choice, and besides losing Sindri’s friendship, temporarily losing his father’s trust was also one of the many prices he had to pay. Despite of all that he still wanted to get answers because that’s “his fate”, that’s who he was. But in the end he decided to break the mask and stop looking for THE answers, that’s exactly him “being better”. To be honest I almost felt surprised that he broke it, and I’d imagine things could have turned out quite differently if he didn’t, we’d never know though.

Change your fate by being better This is something that the Vikings lived by, and this game portrayed it nicely. Vikings didn´t really cared about their future, because what was supposed to happen would happen, thus fate has complete control over their lives. What they could change though, is how they live. They could choose who they were, and this game sums it nicely. Its not important whether you die or survive. Its not about getting a specific result like Odin wanted, its about who you are on the way there. Kratos is a god killing machine, thats his fate. But he managed to go from a wrathful killer of gods, to a protective father that kills gods. It is a paradox, but he rebuilt the world by destruction.

I think the reason why old Jormungandr didn't join Ragnarok is to avoid being erased from existing. So in order for old Jormungandr to exist in GOW 2018, young Jormungandr must fight Thor and be sent back in time. Old Jormie didn't want to risk his own existence so he decided not to join Ragnarok even though he could easily do so.

Why would that erase his existence? In his timeline, he was already sent back in time and that would never change. Also, he could have just fought after his younger self was sent back in time.
@trampoline11x

@@Dlord1PlayStation kind of standard timeline shenanigans really. In fiction atleast. Considering we dont delve in to multiverse level concepts, we are to assume there can only ever be one physical timeline that exists. What ever happens in the past of this time line still has to track with the present one other wise "It never happened". Despite the game revolving around fates and prophecies, I do not believe old Jorman is from a different timeline. He is from this one we playthrough no matter what, because the events of the game are already so so far removed from what might be considered events that should have occured. IE our actually modern day myths, or even the destinies mentioned in game. Young Jorman just has to be sent back in time in order for old Jorman to exist, and it is possible while he was young and filled with new life, he only wanted revenge on Thor. After surviving for who knows how long after being sent backwards, he's likely grown more tired and comfortable in survival and self preservation. Not to mention old Jorman is still stuck in Midgard while all of this occurs in Asgard. So no travelling between realms for big snake friend.

When he talks to Odin early in the game, Odin tells him he doesn't know what it is to be worshiped. He doesn't know the responsibility to have people depend on you for answers and to provide. That intro was so sick! I'd hope maybe you have more God's being killed then other random things (edit: I ended up skipping because i was in a rush nevermind.)

I think the Heimdall fight was proof that Kratos was beginning to change but unfortunately he was unable to get through Heimdall's pride... but make no mistake i believe that Kratos will now give them an opportunity to not be killed and to be better but he will "Do what I must." Great game and mythos, I love the poetic license they took and really weaved a unique story.

Even the kindest person of the world wouldn't have been able to spare Heimdall. He was just too obnoxious to deserve living

This comment section is awesome, so many cool insights. So while the catalyst for Kratos breaking away from his old ways was Faye, the main reason he was able to walk that tough path of “being better” was because of his son. And as a father (which I’m sure all parents can attest to), nothing makes you want to be better more than your children. That last scene where Kratos tells Atreus he’s ready…that is such a big step for any parent. To let go of the child they raised from birth and realise they are no longer “that child” anymore, and that they’re capable of being on their own now - it’s tough. The worry for them is still there, but you have to let them fly to coop at some point. It’s a bittersweet moment really.

I’m kinda sad/disappointed that Atreus is gone, I was hoping it would end with us being able to swap companions between Freya and Atreus. I feel like Atreus being gone lw makes me sad because all the upgrades we invested in him are gone and we can’t play as him anymore.

I honestly think they’ll be a dlc or something of the like in the future for atreus. The game ended very open for him and too many unresolved plot points to wait an indefinite amount of years to be answered

@@jlit5215 I’d bet we either get a dlc for Atreus, or a third game with another time skip. Maybe a plot line that follows what God of War 3 was originally meant to be, where Zeus was killed in the beginning and gods from other realms try and take advantage of the power vacuum. Kratos protects the 9 realms (or 8, I guess), and cements himself as someone worthy of worship.
