2020 was a year of change, some of it planned but most of it unplanned. As with most planned changes within an organization it did not occur overnight. Our Health Authority on Vancouver Island (British Columbia, Canada) was already facing workforce shortages and increased surgical numbers which initiated a mandate to reimagine how our services could be provided without compromising quality. Pathology Services for Vancouver Island, consists of 4 sites performing Histology and 9 Hospitals, plus clinics over 31,000 km2 (12,000 miles2) providing specimens. Our multi-site workflow was assessed from start to finish for opportunities for efficiencies.
In this presentation I will share our experiences of implementing new workflows during a global pandemic. What happened when our planned changes encountered this unplanned event? How did our leadership and staff respond? Where were projects completed and what’s left to do?
