The Eurovision debate between the lead candidates for the Commission presidency will take place on Thursday 23 May in the European Parliament’s plenary chamber in Brussels. The debate is organised by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) in collaboration with the European political parties and the European Parliament.
The debate will feature:
Walter Baier, European Left
Sandro Gozi, Renew Europe Now
Ursula von der Leyen, European People’s Party
Terry Reintke, European Greens
Nicolas Schmit, Party of European Socialists

I’m half Italian half French living in in Italy and in neither of these countries English is understood at the level needed to comprehend the debate. If translated properly yes if not well…

@@Alexander-rr6yn That's also strange to me. In the Netherlands everyone speaks English fluently and at least one other language mostly. German, French or Spanish. Why don't all European countries strive for multilingualism?

Unnecessary. Everyone has internet and all information is available online. Plus it's not television anymore, but "devices" as was mentioned at the beginning of the show. The problem is motivation. Why some people never miss the chance to watch debates and read candidate bios while others don't do that?

This is not a debate. Why only two candidates answer questions? Why do they have only 45 seconds for the answer? This is ridiculous. I'd much prefer to watch a real debate, where everyone has to answer each question and can speak for at least a minute, even if it means less questions. Quality over quantity. How am I supposed to get to know them and their ideas (and decide for who I'm gonna vote) if they answer only a few random questions? What a mess

This is such an incredibly empty debate. 2h of slogans and zero ideas. So sad to see none of the parties seem to have a practical idea of what they'd do if they were elected in a time where the EU is struggling to remain competitive on the global stage

They weren't prohibited based on ideology, they did not put forth a "leading candidate" and therefore there was no one to represent them in the debate.

This is chaos! The topics are just thrown into it and then discussed in 30 seconds. I simply cannot connect with this EU. I simply do not feel that I have any relationship with it! I wasn't even able to follow it proper. And the whole time limits made it worse! Like what happened, did they run out of money?

I love that these debates aren't sensational. It's like the EU. Governance as it should be and no short-term populist or sensational policies. This is why the EU is the most vital hated governmental body: it does what is necessary and not what is popular.

Not sensational is one thing. But the debates were not substantive. What I want to see is concrete policy disputes between parties that are otherwise relatively close to each other. Specific laws that currently aren't getting through due to the current coalition members not agreeing.

It’s not true. VVD said they would not govern with PVV. But after results they had to either take responsibility and dampen the alt right agenda or continue ignoring which only makes them bigger. Acknowledge their concerns and include them because ignoring doesn’t work. Believe I’ve followed it for twenty years.

The only real crisis is incompatible immigration, death of multi-culturalism and thus - major security hazards ahead. The rest of the issues are either a result of this main issue, or less important.

They didn't agree with the rules of the debate. Specifically, the debate was only for people running for office of Commission President and the two rightmost groups didn't believe that running for that office in this way makes sense.

@@stefankotz2242 German is spoken by 20% of the EU as a first language. It's the second most spoken secondary language in the EU after English (which is a primary language only in Ireland among EU nations these days). Complaining that three parties are led by actual Germans is one thing, but complaining that most leaders are fluent in the language is not really indicative of anything but demographics.

Heah, what a show!! I have bin 25 years in several EUROPEAN countries. This EU is a social economy, to search jobs, the companies "want the where do you came from and what you can give to them" and not cooperation or what you can do, if I am not happy in the country that i was born, there is nothing to be done or trade, you have to move forwards. Lately I visited a EU country in which I dominated the language with local socialist government, I did my registration in a local public service as normal, as academic you had to be some sort of open source and at that time I was unemployed, so the public workers delivered me to their artificial communist, that the socialist hold and claim to help the poverty. Conclusion, I didn't gave nothing to the big creatures nothing to the small creatures and afterwards I received a letter with the statement " I was illegally in their country" Aldo I was born in one of the first 12. Waste of money, the worst is that the center/right wing saw this and did NOTHING after I complained. Indeed after 2010 Crysis the center/right just been pushing to some sort of national politics to pay the debt, and now it's uncontrollable and it might substitute the center/right wing. There is no free movement to live a normal life, even if you work happily for a company, the society will break you

They aren't ignored by the EU. They didn't nominate a leading candidate, that could participate in the debate. This rule was made by the EBU, not the EU.

It was the first thing they said, pay attention. The ECR and the ID groups didn’t have a lead candidate and this was a debate between the lead candidates, therefore they didn’t participate.

@@melaniethut7279 the organizers of this debate was EP and EBU, and EP resources were also used extensively for it. The way it worked was that the EP announced a tender that EBU won. At least EBU maintains this position.

It's quite messed up how the whole panel is shouting either for or against military spending and regarding climate change as well... And then give the feeling as if these somehow different things that compete against each other. What competes is paying salaries to the military, climate and educational apparatus without getting enough money for our buck... Invest into military tech development and large scale precise manufacturing techniques and then demand the dual application (peace time and war time) for as many as possible... And on the other hand don't duplicate the jobs (civil engineers/architects whatnot should not exist and all this should be covered by the military engineers... same goes for collecting the trash - a soldier in peace time is a rotating garbage collector). But hey... Let's be populist and think of the people with IQ of less than 110 and/or critical thinking of close to zero and cater to those sheep instead...

on EU subjects Ukraine and middle east problems should not the core and priority issue for the EU citizen to vote for.(Pro Europe, Pro rule of law, Pro green is the most fair criteria). i can see that our values forgot from the start of the war in Ukraine the diplomatic solutions, from 2014, and now that is the result. BTW countries are voting for something different, not because they wake up one morning and say im getting bored so lets vote someone else. they have their reasons. so why you don't try to fix your self's instead of not respecting the votes of the people in EU. as for the journalist. they did a very good job on questions
