I totally agree with you on this! It’s so important. How can you worship in spirit and in truth with an unbeliever? It’s not about entertainment it’s about Jesus!

I would love to be able to memorize all of the music. I have three hurdles to overcome. 1. I have a day job, chores, and a young family that leaves me with less than an hour most days to practice. 2. We often change the keys for songs, so even older songs require practice. 3. We have a repertoire of probably 100+ songs with new songs being added regularly. I only serve once or twice a month, so there is always a new song or two to learn.

I agree, 100% with your code of conduct. I am a relatively new worship team member within the last 12 months and am trying to work on the memorization part so I appreciate your comment on having a bit of grace in that area. I had the opportunity last week to lead worship for our Baptist men’s day, and had several weeks to prepare and memorize. It was so freeing to be able to engage our congregation visually, and as my wife likes to say, invite people to worship with that eye contact. Keep up the good work!

Professional ministers and musicians have time to memorize a lot of music. We volunteers who have full lives and a lot of responsibility just have to do the best we can.

That's what hit me. You have a full-time paid worship leader whose job revolves around the church music demanding that unpaid volunteers who live half an hour from church, work 50 hrs per week commuting an hour each way must sacrifice time with their family to memorize the music.

I so appreciate your point of view. After over 30 years serving in worship in small to mega-churches, I look back and realize how long it took for me to come to some of the important observations you're communicating so well. Keep sharing what you've learned!

I remember this comment from management years ago - "When you communicate clear expectations, your team will have a road map to work together to reach the shared goal". I love your code of conduct! I have tailored it to meet our church's needs as anyone else can as well. It's a great format with excellent points to consider. Thank you so much for sharing it!

I totally agree with you on everything! I have played on worship teams, and have also lead worship at churches. There are 2 things that I would add: 1) the worship team needs a time of prayer and sharing before rehearsal. It doesn't have to be long, but there should be encouragement from God's Word, and a time of prayer. The 2nd, the team needs solid Biblical understanding of the seriousness of being leaders on the team. I love the passage from II Chronicles 20:1-30, where the singers went before in the battle, and when they began to sing, God routed the enemy and set ambush. Even some pastors do not understand it, and I have sat under a few who only see worship time as "doing a couple of songs." That is sad, and so the people are confused and not properly guided in the high calling and responsibility of being on the team. This is also another favorite passage. This is hopefully our view of God and His Word, as worshipers and worship leaders, and as any believer... Isaiah 66:1-2 "Thus says the LORD: 'Heaven is My throne, and earth is My footstool. Where is the house that you will build Me? And where is the place of My rest? For all those things My hand has made, and all those things exist,' says the LORD. 'But on this one will I look: On him who is poor and of a contrite spirit, And who trembles at My Word.'" God bless you, and thank you for sharing this!

So important that worship team members are worshipful and thankful. For how can they encourage people to do what isn't alive in their hearts.

I love your insights. I love reading the comments because they encourage me. I'm part of a worship team that is so unaware. We have 150-200 songs that are rotated and then there's always a new song! You are an inspiration to me.❤

Im not on a worship team but I have stepped in when a guitarist was needed. Unfortunately everytime the songs we need to play are only given to us 3 days before service. So its difficult for me to memorize them. I don't think unbelievers play worship songs and think its just music. They know the purpose otherwise I don't think they would be willing to offer their time to participate

Dude I wish we had practice, the songs are picked right before the services.Half the time they’re some obscure song in a weird tempo that I’ve never heard before. First team I’ve ever been on that doesn’t send the songs out in advance and doesn’t practice regularly.

Agree! I've been begging our lead worship pastor to have regular practices (even once a month is preferable to none). Right now we just do a run-through on Sunday mornings prior to services. Granted, our church is blessed with some great musicians, but I always feel like I'm playing catch up, even if I've memorized the songs on my own in advance. Practice and memorization are conducive to being more engaged in the service of worship. I pray our leaders understand the value of regular practice.

When I played secular gigs we would play four 45 minute sets, up to 11 musicians on stage, no music stands on stage. This was a dance band, R&B, soul, county and rock band. Absolutely no music stands. I've seen church misicians starring at a chart for a 4 chord song with a repeating pattern ie: 4-1-5-6. Doesn't get much easier than that. If they can't play something this simple without reading chord charts, perhaps they should work on their musicianship before taking to the stage.

Yeah most worship music is pretty basic really, not hard to memorize at all, it’s really knowing the meters and nuances of each song.

I often wonder if they ever have listened to the song. Almost all of it is diatonic in nature, if you know the song and you understand basic music theory it's pretty easy. Also it's not a bad idea to actually practice

💯 CCM worship music is literally written to be easy, to be learned and sung quickly by large groups of amateurs. If you can’t pick up a song like that after 1-2 run throughs, you shouldn’t be playing in front of people, you shouldn’t be leading others. You should go home and practice.

OMG YES YES YES!!!! I am a drummer. I have played in bands since I was 7 years old. I am now 56. The ONLY bands that I played in that ever used music stands were orchestras. All school bands we had to memorize our music (again, except concert) and every gigging band I have been in stands were never used. Not even in practices. I am so sick and tired of hearing all the 'stands' people say well even Bob Dylan uses a stand now... Ok..he's 10000 years old!!! (jk..LOVE some Dylan) But I know you have all heard these push-backs. As for our team, I am NOT the paid leader....so I can say what I want (and my leader would say I absolutely do) but I don't control what happens. I HATE music stands. The ONLY time I ever use one is when I am playing a new song with insane drum riffs that I really want to get right. But no one sees my stand. I hate hate hate singers using the stands. And they have stated over and over if the stands go so do they. And when you have under 150 people in your church, you can't (and I get this when the leader says it to me) just piss off those doing this stuff for free. I get it...but I still disagree at times. I am pretty sure that if I were the paid leader there would only be maybe 2 of us on stage.. And no vocalists. LOL UGH!!!!!! And yes chronic lateness. Our practice is 7pm. We usually start about 7:30-7:45 because only 2 of us are ever there before 7pm. Singers show up whenever they feel like it. And the guitar and bass player pretty much the same. This also goes for SUNDAY before service rehearsal. 8am is practice. 9:15 is service. People are showing up (congregation) at 8:30. Sometimes singers don't show up until 8:20-8:30. But again, our team is 7 people. MOST of us play every Sunday 52 weeks a year plus special services. So if these rules were mandatory, I know we would absolutely lose 2 of the people for good. And possibly 4.

I'll jump in here too...and I have a question above as well. I have also played in bands and we never had stands...everything was memorized and actually much more involved, with intrumental harmonizing, tighter breaks and such... you guys know the drill. But the lead sheets we are handed, just before service will be in "who knows what key"...and the chord changes... specifically some slash chords and transition chords are usually different. CCLI lead sheets are usually wrong I feel much of the time, so do you memorize several versions of the same song? My worship leaders are INTENT on changing keys, so whoever the singer is, can sing it...versus learning a song in a set key...and especially NOT considering whether it's easy for the congregation or not. The praise team singer needs are the most important.... and I actually disagree but cant argue with leadership.

Hey Spencer, I used to memorize all my music but suffered a TBI almost 5 years ago which has made things a lot more difficult. Any advice? It is significantly harder for me than it used to be, things I memorized prior to the TBI are fine, but it's hard to learn new stuff. The lyrics are the issue though, not the chords. It HAS been slowly getting better, but it's still a difficulty. We have approximately 130 songs in our list (some are barely if ever used). But as I'm one of our regular Worship Team Leaders, it has occasionally been tough, especially for wordier songs.

Memorizin is great. IF you do not work a Day Job, have a family, …etc.. you staff boys got plenty of time. Honestly tho, CCM is elementary to play tho…like you said, same 4 chords. its the stupid complicated arrangements. But we have words on monitor on the floor and that makes it easy for the vocalist and us musicians can grab a quick look at screen
