On a bonus episode of Leafs Talk, Blake Murphy and JD Bunkis begin with the news that Kyle Dubas is being hired by the Pittsburgh Penguins as their next president of hockey operations. They discuss what he has in store in Pittsburgh and how he'll be remembered in Toronto before they go live to Brad Treliving's introductory press conference (13:11). Blake and JD give their reactions and takeaways, discuss what kind of autonomy Treliving will have, his plans for the core four and Sheldon Keefe, and what they expect out of the new GM before July 1st.

I'm not in sports media, but I really liked what Treliving had to say. I actually liked the clarity in which he spoke.

What do you expect the new GM to say? Why would he tip his hand to the media on what he's doing, especially in Toronto? SMH!

Pittsburg offered Kyle Dubax the GM job but Dubas was hesitant about accepting so the Fenway Group offered him a better president job.

Treliving's inheriting a team that has little to no draft picks for the next two years, and what seems like 8-10 players who either need contract extensions or a new contract else they walk as a UFA...

Just don't understand why JD were so skeptical on every words Brad Treliving said, and why Shanny not being fired. It is his first day on the job, and changes will happen after Brad get a full understanding of how MLSE works and get to know the coaches, players of this teams. and his thoughts will evolves and so as his plan. Shanny is staying, Kyle is gone, and Brad is hired, this is what it is. I do realize that I live in a real dynamic world, and life is a limited time journey. I prefer to spend time on something more reasonable, educatable with constructive advises. Anyhow, good luck to all and happy life.

Alot of this wining means nothing Calgary put restrictions on certain actions so Shanahan is necessary to help navigate through the multiple key issues right now.

Hi, I am Stephen from Foxtrap, NL, around the corner of Blake. As one Newfoundlander to another, can someone please tell Blake to get more sleep or go get a blood test? Lol He always looks sick, white as a ghost , just very unhealthy! He must be low/void of something!! I do not mean this any other way only worried. Thanks and btw you guys do an awesome job!!

Love Blake and JD, but I don't see much value in grading this guy's first press conference. We should grade him on how the team does come next year's playoffs. That is all that matters.

I think another reason that the FA deals never seem to work is, because players are under team control until 26, you are more paying for what someone did than what they will bring. In the NHL historically speaking forwards production peak at like 24 on average. Like that's actually been studied. Some guys like Ovi buck that trend, but even with him, when were his 60 goal year and 100 point years? In his early 20's. Guys very often fall off in their late 20's and early 30's, right when they can start to sign UFA deals. They might still be good, but not worth what they signed for and what they signed for was based off production few players can maintain.

Lets put a few good key points in trielivings favor... he chose toronto, he wanted to come here. Im pro anyone who doesnt have hesitation. Hes not afraid to defer to people around him, which is the sign of a great leader. Trieliving also came from background where ownership liked to dip their toes in the affairs of the team. Why do teams even have jobs like president of hockey operations? Yes its corporate sponsorships and blah blah blah, but more importantly its so that there is a buffer between ownership and hockey ops. Whats one of the things most medias always gripe about with their teams ' oh the owners did this, and now the teams worse off'. It happened in buffalo, its happened before in toronto, and in calgary. Trieliving had his moves neutered by ownership bringing in his coach. At least now with the leafs trielivings move get put throhh someone with a good hockey mind, instead of ownership doing something crazy and unpredictable

My take away is the guy just got hired and he's not going to come in here and say yes lets tear it down or yes I will be dealing some of there top dogs. I would guess its highly likely MLSE instructed him what to say or what not to say. Alot of these types of scenerios are in a controlled envirinment. What I did not like his defense on the top guys. I really really did not like that. But it could be he's just trying to fit in and get the players to like him but I believe what the team needs is a more hard nosed guy. Team needs tough love and a tougher off season training regime. This team for the past 4 years gets blown up first 10 games of season. That said if there's a trade out there for Matthews and its pretty reasonable I think they should bite at it. Leafs need draft picks and there core needs to have a freakish desire to win. Kind of like Mcdavid attitude. A major turn off is guys who don't give it there all and think they can just rely on talent only.

Lots of them seem to have some kind of weird parasocial relationship with Dubas. So when he got fired it's like they got fired. And Treliving/Shanahan is their dad of course, so any time they speak it's like when you're 12 and your dad tells you to eat the broccoli.

Pittsburgh is deemed to fall to the bottom in the next 5 years. Crosby will retire soon, Malkin is also on borrowed time, Letang is probably on his last season and after that you don't have much left. Dubas is so bright that he wanted the full control of a sinking ship, that's what happens when you have such an ego that only you image counts.

Stupid take. Dude he knew he had Pittsburgh lined up so he asked for more money from the leafs... leafs told him know your roll kid your blessed to have what you got.
