Leane was diagnosed with ovarian cancer aged 49 years in April 2017. What started as a routine visit to her GP to confirm what she thought was signs of menopause, ended with the discovery of a large tumour on each ovary and another tumour growing between the liver and diaphragm.
After a large 12 hour operation it was confirmed Stage 3C Advanced Serous Ovarian Cancer. Weekly chemotherapy for 6 months was needed and on completion of treatment Leane was told she had a poor prognosis with a 20% chance of 5 year survival. This was a lot to comprehend and hard to accept.
Unfortunately the cancer returned 4 months later and since that time Leane has been in constant treatment with another 3 different chemotherapies and some other treatments along the way.
Leane now has to live with an incurable cancer with no hope of remission or a cure.
She has thrown herself into advocating for more funding and research into ovarian cancer with the hope that there may be a long term treatment option found, and also so that her three daughters don’t have to live in fear of this disease. The cancer is not genetic - they really don’t know what has caused it, and this is frightening because with no early detection test and very vague symptoms it means that all women are vulnerable.
