Learn about Cyclekarts - putting the fun back into motor racing

Cyclekarts are relatively new in the UK, but have a big following global following, particularly in the USA.
They are scaled down racers, using around 200cc engines, based on designs of cars from the 1920s. Generally apart from the engine, wheels and some running gear, the rest is home built, so really is a 'kit' car. They usually take inspiration from a particular race car for the bodywork styling.
Races are held across the UK on both grass and tarmac, and includes a visit to the legendary Brooklands circuit. But the focus is on enjoyment, not necessarily winning.
Trevor caught up with a number of owners at the Newark Kit Car Festival where they were demonstrating their cars on a small circuit.

That is a beautiful car! I'm a cyclekart enthusiast in California. I participated in the 2016 Scottsdale Grand Prix, which had maybe 100 cyclecarts.

So clarify what you think a total build would cost? Giving that all work is done by the driver and not shopped out.

Probably I shouldn't have mentioned the Scottsdale Gran Prix, because it had practically nothing to do with cyclekarting in general. The cars were all built by a company (Vintage Kart Company), and you can buy one - for about $10,000. I have built cars of about the complexity of a cyclekart (like a 1/2 scale jeep) but for all the thinking I've done about cyclekarts, I haven't built one yet. So any ideas I have about cost are just guesses. You can buy new wheels for $375. If you really scrounge, I suppose you could get the parts for maybe $1000=1500. What do you think?

@@pudnbug Dude, you were in one cyclekart race a hundred years ago and you have always thought you were better than everyone else because of it, and it wasn't even proper cyclekarts it was some phoney kart company that made some crap karts nobody will ever remember. Nobody cares you were in some fake soap box race when you were 5 years old, lighten up!

Love the workmanship. A really well made and proportioned car. Having watched a number of videos from America, some of the ones over there are literal works of art. At the same time, some are cobbled together. That is what is soo great about this. It is the taking part more than anything. If my situation changed, I would love to have a go.

Wow, love that! Someone needs to produce a kit. It'd sell like hot cakes and might become a really popular racing formula. Cheaper even than banger racing. 10hp in that, on a tight kart track, whold be an absolute blast.

When the world eventually gets to be civilized, with no wars or poverty, Cyclekarts will be alongside bicycles the number 1 and 2 means of transport ( and fun )

Die Zwischenkriegszeit war die Zeit der Cyclecars bei uns in Österreich. Es gab die Marken : Groffry, Amilcar und etliche andere auch. Das waren ganz einfache kleine Benzinautos meist nur ein-zweisitzig und oft Rennwagen nachempfunden. Die fuhren im ganz normalenStraßenverkehr. Sie waren halt erschwinglich billig, denn normale Autos konnten sich damals nur "Reiche" leisten. Damals entstand der Ausdruck "Luxusauto" für die "normalen Autos". Und diese Einstellung hält sich leider bis heute am Leben. Der Haß auf jeden Pkw. seitens der GRÜNEN, überhaupt der Linken Szene hat, damals , seinen Ursprungund erhalten und ist nur der Ausdruck des Neides. Cyclecars waren nette Sport- Spielfahrzeuge die aber auch, im praktischen Leben einsatzfähig waren.

If you built it around an existing tiny chassis like an Austin 7 that is registered already then it would be classed as a rebody, so yes you could ! 75" wheel base and 40" track.

I looked into this a few years ago as a general thought exercise, you can in theory, you'd put it through on a quadricycle IVA but it wouldn't be easy. You would need to deviate by quite an amount from the standard formula with full brakes, lights and a few other changes that I can't remember off the top of my head.

wait a minute , 200CC and only 6,5 HP ?? how ?? my old 125 CC bike already have 10-11, and modern ones are at 15 due to regulations , and with twice the CC , they make half the power ?

Because they are built from motorcycle parts and are the size of a kart. They originated in the early 1900's at the dawn of the automotive age and were called cyclekarts originally.

No such thing as four wheel bicycles _[four wheel two wheel cycles.]_ The "bi" in bi-cycle means "two"... hence bicycle is two wheeled cycle, tricycle is three wheeled cycle, quadcycle or quadricycle is four wheeled cycle _[Henry Ford called his first car a quadricycle, which is intelligent English.]_ Nonetheless still beautiful quadricycles.

But that would miss the point. Simple, relatively safe and very cheap with the weedy motor. Still a great thrill on the right track.

I don't get why they use such weak engines... LAME! These things need to have a VFR 800 V four engine! Besides a 426 hemi the VFR engine is the best sounding engine ever made. You can also supercharge them! ;)

Because then people could easily kill themselves and the thing would need to be much stronger and have safety kit that would make it the size of the original car.

@@spectrumofreality Well, build one and then try to get it through scrutineering. And, there are plenty of motorsports a bit like this but with more powerful engines and better safety. Those are called conventionalk historic racing. LOL!
