What an amazing video bro. So so good. Well executed and so eloquently explained. One thing I would add, is that people should also have realistic expectations about what they can achieve with methods like these and that fluency takes dedication and hardwork, but being good enough at a language skill to have an enjoyable time is much more realistic and "simpler" people shouldn't expect this method to help them master a language, but it should help them get good enough at a language, and thats enough for most day to day things, that is fluent under a certain context. Also, not for you especifically but for more novice learners, beware of words that look exactly the same, they don't always mean the same thing, prenumbra is very similar but the context of it is different. Translated in the context of the sentence it would be more common to say shadow in english

Thanks man! I’m really glad you enjoyed it, I was nervous you might have not found it sufficient 😭. And you bring up some excellent points (gonna pin your comment so ppl can see too)! It’s definitely a long process in learning a language, most especially Japanese which is what I’m sure the majority of people are interested in.

For Spanish, I practice with my family, since my mom and dad and my grandparents are all native speakers, but our type of Spanish is Cuban Spanish so it’s different that Spaniard Spanish. Some words that appear in my Spanish volumes of bookworm are unknown to my family when I ask them what it mean because they don’t know since our dialect of Spanish is different. So I have to google it. As for Japanese, I’m on my own. 😅

This is something I told a friend to do so he can learn how to pronounce in English some words and that is to watch a TV series that he likes in English with English subs and then rewatch the episode with Spanish subs, so that he can relate the words

I've been trying to learn Spanish and I really appreciate these videos. Reading a book in another language is challenging but I think manga offering the visual aid could be really helpful while I'm still early. One thing I wanted to mention I saw you doing but never called out, was that you read aloud. When I first started duolingo I was blazing through the text but also skipping the vocal portions as I usually was practicing on a train to work. To my horror one day, I tried conversing with someone and I was mispronouncing almost every word lol. Hope you keep up this content!
@Weeabruh
@Weeabruh 2 жыл бұрын
Lmao this is so true!! I often found myself skipping the pronunciation parts as well (since it’s not absolutely necessary for reading / comprehension ) which helped expedite the process but has been terrible for my pronunciation 😂

For people who are skeptical, if you look at dreaming in spanish's intro series you'll see that learning via comprehensible input is a very efficient and known way of learning languages. I do recommend starting with listening practice first, but for reading practice manga is way easier to start with than typical books, as stated in the video, because it provides visual context.

I only make little progress with Japanese (usually just some Duolingo to keep up until I have enough energy again for the textbook), but I started buying French manga a while ago. I learned French at school many years ago, and to refresh it, I started reading manga in French, mostly because they have this great Perfect Edition of Beck - I really need a complete print edition of it on my shelf.

Though shounen manga do have more furigana (the little hiragana on the side) because it's for a younger audience, it would be pretty hard to find a manga without any furigana, mostly because kanji has multiple meanings so sometimes the author has to specify which way you should read the kanji.

the intro actually made my laugh my ass off. actually i am learning french with mangas even though i must say that sometimes it is hard to find manga in your target language, i tried looking for mangas in german but GOD it really was hard to find a reliable website to read some manga because it was practically non-existent, i must say that it depends on how many mangas are translated in your target language.

I remember growing up my mom would get me a lot of books in Spanish so I could practice and seeing this video feels like a sign that I should start doing that again. I think using the images in manga would be a great visual aide since i'm all on my own for any other language. I've been using Duolingo to learn Italian but I want to start using it for French since I'm taking French in school, do you know any way to quickly max out the first few units so I can get closer to where my actual level is?

Your username has me weak 😭 Edit after watching the video: your method is language teacher approved 👍 i could bore you with the technical terms for all the hints/tips you mentioned but i won't lol. This method will work very well. The big thing to remember: read something that is just slightly above your level. If it's too easy, you won't learn. If it's too hard, you'll get frustrated and give up. This goes hand-in-hand with reading something you're interested in/familiar with. Like you demonstrated in the video, if you already know the context of the story or have other prior knowledge, you can sometimes guess what certain words mean.
