Would it be okay if a non-Muslim also said “Peace be with you” in Arabic as well? It seemed to make my patient and his family really happy when I said this to them. The wife even teared up that I knew it. It made me happy that I could say something in her language that was deeply meaningful (in any context). Your thoughts?

Thank you Mark. I will remember this.❤️ As for the others in this comment thread, have we not learned yet that no matter your ethnicity or where you’re born, WE determine the people we want to be? Because someone is uncontrollably BORN European does not mean they inherently are evil or good, and the same goes with ALL other ethnicities and countries (just using European because it was mentioned). Why can’t we just respect humans for being human instead of making such extreme judgements based on what someone was born into? Such a shame.

Yass I need this im black American and I'm trying to learn Arabic so bad be cause we have a lot of stores owned by Arabs in the black neighborhoods of Chicago, and I'm really cool with them, especially the younger generation, and my dad speak pretty good fluent Arabic, that he taught his self years ago, but him and I are so busy with work he don't have too much time to teach me, sometimes I feel so left out when he's having a full blown conversation with Arabic people and I'm standing around looking stupid, but I'm not taking it any more all my free time I'm going to learn Arabic, so I can hold a decent conversation with my Arabic friends at the store like dad.

You should all know that this is Standard Arabic. We normally speak dialects of SA, such as Moroccan Arabic (my native tongue).. But it's OK if you speak Standard Arabic. It's the code you can use in all Arab countries. It'll save you the trouble of learning all other language varieties. Also, you'll be able to read literature, legal documents, watch Arabic news, and so on.

I became exposed to a group of Iranian Muslim immigrants to the U.S. by way of hand raising parakeets and offering them for sale. One family came to visit and see the birds. I gifted a bird to their daughter, and my family became friends with their family and then after a while, several others. I liked speaking with them about life in Iran, and how things were different here.

these are all the forms of greetings in arabic (the most common ) for someone intrested: marhaban (hi )-----> the respond is "ahlan" (hi responding way) or "ahlan wa sahlan" (welcome) "assalamu alaykom" (peace be upon you , culturally used by muslim)---> the respond is "wa alaykom assalam" (peace be upon you too) "sabahu al khayr"( good morning)---> the respond is "sabahu annur" (morning of light or bright morning) "masaou el - khayr"(good afternoon)---> the respond is "masaou-nnour" "wadaan"(good bye) or "ila-alliqa (see you )---> the respond is "maassalama" (be safe) there are several manners but these are the most common . this is a standard arabic (classic) understood by all arabs (22 countries)....now ILA-ALLIQA ! from a Tunisian :)

I think five years will be more than enough time. I've been learning for less than a month, and I have to say, it's best to learn the Arabic alphabet and then all of the sounds for it, before beginning to learn words like these. There are letters like ع غ خ [ghayn] [ayn] [Khā] which aren't present in the English language. As well as, knowing the difference between Classical Arabic (which is used in the Qu'raan) and the different dialects (Egyptian, Moroccan, Syria, KSA, etc.) Good luck!

That was your very interesting post, here are a few more tips on how to learn Arabic… Set realistic goals, don’t just dive in and say “I want to be fluent Arabic within 1 year”, give yourself short term goals which lead up to long term goals. E.g. Short Term Goal = “I want to learn all about this topic in 1 month” and Long Term Goal = “I aim to be able to speak about at least 12 topics within the next year. Make time, you will need to set some time aside, preferably on a daily basis, so you can achieve your goal. I highly recommend blocking out actual time on your calendar every day and really commit to this. Think of it as a

Alhamdulillah (Arabic: الحمد لله‎) is an Arabic phrase meaning "Praise to God". It is commonly used by Arabic speakers of all religions, including Christianity and Judaism, and frequently by Muslims due to the centrality of this specific phrase within the texts of the Qur'an and the words of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. It is similar to the Hebrew word Hallelujah הַלְלוּיָהּ ('God be praised').
