Yes that's right, the proper pronunciation of "five" 五 (ng5) is supposed to be said without open lips, the sound is produced while back of the tongue touches the upper palate. But nowadays many people say it with closed lips (m5) because it is easier. The same goes for 吳(ng4), 唔 (ng4), etc.

Great lesson. Excellent tutorial. Hopefully 'learning Chinese' would not be naturally assumed to be mandarin. The title of this should actually be 'Chinese - Cantonese' since all the other videos on learning Chinese is really mandarin without acknowledging that mandarin is only a subset of Chinese. Great video.

Yeah as someone mentioned below - 15 - the 5 here is incorrect - “ng” and “mg” - lips shouldn’t touch; same for 50.

You should use y instead of j in a lot of cases (yut for 1, yee for 2 for example)
@soquentiasseurompe688
@soquentiasseurompe688 9 жыл бұрын
No. She uses a romanization called Jyutping. In that system, "j" respresents a palatal approximant (as in the IPA), that is the sound written as "y" in English and another commonly used romanization system for Cantonese called Yale.
@bravoalphahk
@bravoalphahk 3 жыл бұрын
Yutping is the biggest mistake the Cantonese-learning community ever made. Not that it's hard at all for dedicated students, it's just so consistently unintuitive for English, to be writing "chat" as "cat" and Y as J.
@spookyencounters9392
@spookyencounters9392 3 жыл бұрын
@@bravoalphahk absolutely agree! Glad I'm not the only one who was thinking that. Makes it harder for any one trying to learn the language. Wonder why they didn't spell it how it sounds. In other words, properly. 🥴

In Cantonese, the English name uses the transliteration, meaning that it sounds similar. For instance, Olivia could be 奧利維亞 (ou3 lei6 wai4 aa3). ;)

Although the video is right too, we also use 廿(yaa/ye) as twenty ,also we use 卅(saa aa) as thirty. After thirty, we also will turn 十 into aa. but the above sounds only work when the unit place is more than zero in counting. for example 56 could be ng sep luk or ng aa luk. 34 could be saam sep sei or saa aa sei 22 could be yi sep yi or yaa/ye yi but 20 could only be yi sep , NOT -yaa/ye- 30 could only be saam sep, NOT -saa--aa- 50 could only be ng sep, NOT -ng--aa-

0:56 I have a question, so for the “romanization” of 13 is sap6 saam1 what does the 6 and 1 mean?
@CantoneseClass101
@CantoneseClass101 4 жыл бұрын
The numbers behind the romanization are tones. Since the same pronunciation in different tones has different meanings, that's an essential part of Cantonese language. :) To learn more about Cantonese tones, check out our other videos here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jtOdnteFqdW3YGg.htmlm18s kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qal2qK6gxJ-9dpc.html Team CantoneseClass101.com

There is a reason to use j instead of y. In IPA and many other phonetic systems, /j/ is pronounced as y. However, there are some other kind that uses y insyead, which may be easier for foreigners to understand.
@spookyencounters9392

So what is that reason then? You never explained lol. I dont understand why they don't spell it the way it sounds. Ie: chat and yat , instead of cat and jat.

The Jaa6 for 20 is very helpful because I’m always confusing it for either 1 or 2 because mandarin is Yi for 1, cantonese jat1 for 1 and ji6 for 2. So I’m like Jaa6 means what again? 😂

How do you distinguish jat1 baak3 (100) from jat1 baat3 (1,8)? I guess I mean how do you hear the difference between hundred and eight?
@CantoneseClass101
@CantoneseClass101 7 жыл бұрын
Most of the time it depends on the context, we try to avoid using it in a case that could cause confusion. Rule of thumb is, most of the baak3 "hundred" has a number in front of it (eg. jat1 baak3, ji6 baak3, etc). But I admit, it's not uncommon for us to have to verify.

Very true. Actually, when referring to any language from the region of China, it is better not to use the word Chinese at all. Technically speaking, 華語 is the closest thing to an actual word for the 'spoken Chinese languages' as a group, but really there is no such thing as spoken Chinese. The word 'Chinese' when used in relation to language means the written language only (中文). However, as most Chinese people use 中文 to mean Spoken Chinese, it is only natural English makes the same mistake.

@CantoneseClass101
