Hey everyone, it has been a bit of a crazy month for me so this video is arriving a little later than I expected, but I hope you still find it educational.
Please, let me know if this method of learning pronouns suits you! There's a practice part at the end of the video, but I advise you to use that after you have actually studied the different pronouns.
In future videos, I will o cover the rest of the pronouns, so stay tuned for more lessons to come!
Keep in mind, the pronouns and the rules around them are somewhat complex and I tried to cover as much as possible in this video. So, it might be a lot at times, but take it one section at a time. As always, I'm here for you for any questions you might have!

Many years ago while living in Croatia for a while I began to learn by myself and finally have now enrolled for the class. This channel is gold! Thanks for these videos, they are brilliant. You should look at the Easy Polish Series. It would be good to have the same in Croatian. There is street talk and grammar videos all designed for language learning. There was Easy Croatian, but it stopped years ago.

I love this channel. I have a lot of friends in countries that speak either Croatian or related languages. I love the vidoes you're already doing and I'd love to see, in addition to what you're already doing, some videos more in the style of Michel Thomas, Paul Noble and Language Transfer. I think you're current expository style would be nicely complimented by this other style -- and both in one channel would be insanely helpful, I imagine. I did a few drills with languages like Serbian, Mandarin and Papiamento (videos on my channel) with friends and they helped both me and other friends who were learners :) It'd be really cool to see you marry the two styles -- but hey, like I said, already a fantastic channel and you can count me as one of your subscribers. Keep up the great work! :)

This is brilliant! Well done! I'm part of a group of older (mainly) British students, learning Croatian with CLS London. I've been learning for around 5 years and Covid has given me the chance to do two a week. Each summer, Covid permitting, we go to Croatia for a week for a "summer school" for language and culture. Last year (2021) we were in Lovran. Not many of us, becuase of Covid, but we hope to have more this year when we are due to be in Vis for the third week of June. If more of the usual students come, we have people from the UK, USA, Australia, The Netherlands, Austria, France and Ukraine!

Your father was probably one of them and it's so great of you to want to learn the language. I'm sorry to hear the courses are expensive there... I'm a croatian descendent who also speak Spanish , given that...do you think that I could follow any rule to help me to conjugate different verbs in croatian ?, or to know the infinitive form when I read a conjugated form of a verb ?. Hi, Maria! I'm happy you're here and are learning Croatian! And Spanish is such a beautiful language! As for thr conjugation of verbs, there are videos here about present tense verbs in Croatian that might help. There are some tips and tricks that you could use, if you know the endings for, say, present tense verbs, etc.

It is complex! But you did a very good job explaining. Thank you! I have an unrelated question. On a Croatian language app I use, the words “zato jer” were sometimes used together in sentences meaning “because”. Is it proper or common to use both words together? Would it be to emphasize? Also for a possible video, a word that is placed a lot in sentences is “što” in combination with other words to convey a meaning that may not mean “what”. I would like to figure out where and when “što” should be used. Thanks again! 😊

Thank you for your comment and compliment! I'm glad the video cleared some things up for you. As for "because", the correct phrase is actually "zato što", and not "zato jer". I will attempt to make a video about the "što" pronoun. It's an important one in the language.

The short form of the pronouns aren't difficult to understand for Brazilian/Portuguese speakers because we use the same construction - vidio sam je jučer- Eu a vi ontem (a would be the short form of ela- object). You can't say Eu vi ela ontem, because Vi ela when spoken turns to "viela" which is a small street (eu viela- ja uličica)

This video clarified and crystallized so many things I have been struggling with (such as "je", "ga" and word placement). This method is incredibly useful. Additionally, the practice at the end helps greatly. I like practice immediately following instruction to cement newly-acquired knowledge. I will be watching this over and over. I have a question...it may sound simplistic but can make such a difference in conversation. Is there a general rule regarding which syllable in a word is emphasized for the number of syllables? It seems to me in most two-syllable words the emphasis lies in the first syllable. With exceptions, of course. Some say "RO-vinj" but others say "Ro-VINJ". In "oprostite" it seems the emphasis is placed on the second syllable. I am confused with words like "savršenstvo". Which syllable is emphasized? Once again, thank you. I appreciate your videos very much! Your help is life changing. Truly. You answer questions I do not even know existed! 😊

Thank you so much for your feedback! I'm great the lesson clarified a lot of things for you! There's sometimes a lot to uncover in seemingly simple things such as pronouns... As for your question, it is by no means simplistic, and it's actually really, really good. In fact, the accent is what makes reading hard in Croatian for foreign speakers. There are 4 types of accents or stresses in Croatian and these are sometimes quite confusing. The general rule of thumb is to never emphasize the last syllable. Longer words with more syllables normally emphasize the first syllable. Also, different regions in Croatia might stress the words differently, too!

@@learncroatian9135 Yes! We take pronouns for granted. :) Things are making sense now. My introduction to Croatian was simply vocabulary but now I am able to correctly (that is important to me!) put thoughts and sentences together. I've made many mistakes (such as inadvertently telling a store clerk I was hungry rather than just looking!). I've had many uncomprehending looks, especially with legalities such as business dealings and banking. But most experiences have been lovely, especially when given time to converse. And ALL are learning experiences. Thank you for answering my question. I've been emphasizing syllables instinctively but this is Croatian we're talking about. ;) Inflections also change things. A few years ago people gave me perplexed looks when I named my village in Istria which happens to contain an "r". Turns out I wasn't rolling the "r" long enough! My sincere thank you for all you do. Presumably you're a teacher by profession. Many of my ancestors were/are teachers and professors. I have such respect for educators.

I know it can seem like a daunting task, but a rewarding one as well. Ah, we are all bound to make mistakes. That's why many people hesitate to speak in the language they are learning, which will only slow them down. So, definitely keep going at it, even of you do get weord looks 😁 I still think people appreciate it immensely 😉 I will be making videos about pronunciation in Croatian but it won't be for quite some time. In the meantime try to get as much listening practice as you can. Like audio books or anything like that, so that your ear can get more used to it. And if you're in Istria, it would have been just as helpful for you to learn Italian 😂 I absolutely love Istria. It's like a country of it's own... Yes, I am a teacher by profession and passion, I would say. I'm glad I can put my gifting to good use in many areas. Always nice to hear people appreciate the profession. Thank you 😊

@@learncroatian9135 Some in Croatia say not to bother with grammar but I feel the need to for my sake as I love to learn... and learn correctly. Not only that but it is out of respect for the country I call home part time. Plus it sure comes in handy almost daily. I'm very determined! And now that I am grasping it more readily than ever before, I'm actually seeing changes and practicing with greater confidence. It is a beautiful language and though challenging it also makes sense. Now. 😃 I'm also learning snippets of Italian but not in depth at this point. Istria is very special indeed. When asking a good friend whether she had been to Venice as it's so close she said, "Why would I? Everything I want is right here!" I will never forget the passion and vehemence she spoke those words with. Well, I must say your students are very fortunate to have such an enthusiastic, knowledgeable and passionate teacher! My teacher sister is the same. Some people seem born to educate! I realize I am gushing but mean it sincerely (my family is a verbose one). No exaggerating but your videos are life changing to me. Croatia is very special...for some reason since my husband and I visited the first time I have felt a true affinity with it, where I feel most at home, though have no Croatian roots.

It's so beautiful that you have found Croatia to be your "part-time" home. It is such a beautiful country with such passionate people... You have no idea how happy I am that my videos are helping you so much. This has been my hope from the start, to make high-quality content that will help people with different aspects of the language. I would agree with those who suggested to not bother with grammar. But, this is important to do at the beginning. Grammar is fun when you learn it little by little. For instance, you notice that the word order changes when you take the subject out. Then you check out that rule and you understand why it happens and then you have effortlessly learned a new grammar rule that you can implement. Yet, learning just a set of rules without vocabulary and putting them into practice immediately won't do you much good. It seems you're absolutely on the right track with putting everything to use and understanding WHY things are the way they are. This is the best way to learn the language.

Oprostite ako ne pišem super na hvratskom ako ja pokušavam 😂 I think it was very helpful to have the practise and to start off only using Ja and Ti because it wasn’t overwhelming at the beginning and I also got to apply what I learnt at the end of the video pa hvala puno!! I think you may have talked about this before but I’m not sure, sorry! But something is confusing for me, and it is that for certain numbers masculine plural nouns end in a (like četiri psa). What is this rule exactly and what is the declension for masculine plural nouns like this? I hope you understand but I’ll try to explain better if I didn’t explain well enough, thank you 😅

I am glad you liked the video! And than you for the helful feedback. I know grammar can get overwhelming so I want to try and make it less so, so thanks for letting me know it's worked 😉 As for your question, the numbers are a bit tricky. I'll make a lesson about that as well in the future. But, the nouns that stand with numbers 1 to 4 are declined as singular and 5 and up as plural. The noun that stands with 1 is in nominatve sing. - jedan pas; nouns that stand with 2-4 are genitive sing. - dva psa, tri psa, 4 psa; and then from 5 and up are genittive plural - pet pasa, dvadeset pasa, but it's 22 psa, going back to geninite sing. because the numer ended in 2. Does this make sense?

I am looking for you all day is incorrect English. You need to say ...i've been looking for you all day....i am doesn't make sense. Thank you so much for making these videos, my mom is from Zagreb and taught me very little croatian but her accent has helped me pronounce words easier. Thank god the alphabet is easy ....born in the United States we have a hard time using the word "specific" .....it's hard to say with an s so most people tend to say "pacific" when talking fast. The two "you" forms in croatian is confusing vi and ti. I just know ti is personal and vi is formal. na at start of words is confusing too.

I taught English for many years without using the words on the left. I mean dative, etc. Not sure if you are a native speaker, but can't you use a word like objective? It is easier. Many native speakers will appreciate it!

@@learncroatian9135 you speak great! I meant in the left column, you have dative, etc , the types of pronouns in English. You are not teaching English grammar, so please use the simpler alternative words: objective, ex: me, subjective, like I, and possessive like my, etc. It is easier for a lot of Americans. I never taught those words to learners of English language unless they were interested in majoring in English language.

Dan is a masculine noun and the adjective "cijeli" needs to be masculine as well. Cijelu je feminine gender adjective.

@@learncroatian9135 oh, I should have figured it. My grandfather was Croatian and I spent my first 8 years of my life with him in Ilova (Kutina). My parents didn't care for this language, but I still have memories with my grandpa talking serbian-croatian (as the language was called at the time) to me. In his memory I decided to learn this language as it is in my heart along my grandpa. Really appreciate what you're doing, I have subscribed 2 your channel👍
