Learn more about music production & DJ Tips: bit.ly/aulart_connect
We had the pleasure of having Hernan Cattaneo as a special guest in our Instagram mentoring session. He told us about his setup and equipment he uses as a Dj, how to organize his music to always be ready in any type of performance, without forgetting the music style that characterizes him; how he works his loops, how to correct mistakes when live, how to work with other Djs, etc.
For those who do not know Hernan Cattaneo, he is one of the most recognized and best positioned DJs in the world. Of Argentine nationality and a great lover of progressive house music, Hernan has spent more than 40 years working passionately as a DJ, and collaborating with great DJs such as Sasha, Danny Tenaglia, Paul Oakenfold or John Digweed.
Here’s what we talked about:
02:28 What is your current DJ setup?
10:37 How do you organize the music?
18:00 How do you discover new music? Where do you get your music from?
23:24 When you arrive to a club to play with a particular mindset to but you find that the situation at the club is not as expected. Do you change your set anyway or do you change it?
26:40 Do you always prepare your sets with a particular sound or do you like adding variety to it?
29:13 When you play a wrong track. What do you do to sort it out?
34:03 Do you use any effects on the Pioneers? Do you have any favorite ones?
36:05 How do you prepare a long set?
45:40 How to face a back-to-back with another Dj?
53:46 What three DJ Tips would you give for someone who just started?
These mentoring sessions, for those who do not know them yet, are online sessions organized by Aulart to interview artists from the electronic music scene to answer questions live that are of your interest, so you can continue learning from the most enriching source there is: the own experience of great professionals.

An absolute privilege to listen to tips from such a legend! I'm glad he mentioned how he focusses on the subtleness of mixing prog, as he is a master of this, and something I have always loved about listening to him play.

In some moment Hernan said that he never talk about music with Nick Warren before a b2b "not because they are super DJ's". If I can correct, yes. You both are super DJ's!

Hernan describes the difference in philosophies between advanced veteran DJs and beginners & journeyman. When it is ALL about the vibe, I will say this. The 2am-4am slot is always what I lived for, and did best. BUT, playing the OPENING slot for bigger talent TAUGHT ME HOW TO BE THE VETERAN DJ WHO DESERVED THAT MAIN TIME SLOT.

Absolutely! Quite often on my Twitch streaming platform when I DJI play easily 8 to 10-hour Marathon sets. It's becoming more and more common for me. In fact just last weekend I reached a new personal record and did just under 22 hours streaming. Very much like the guest DJ I subscribe to Absolute passionate love for the art of DJing and it is truly a musical sound Journey that we try to create for listeners. Thank you for the interview excellent video

Great questions to Hernan , very interesting to look inside his view to DJing, he's a true artist and for a starting DJ there's no better musician to look up to. As a huge fan of Hernan and other DJs we are really lucky that they can make music until they are 80 years old ! Unlike football career where your favorite players retire at 35 years old and thats the end of your joy. DJs only get better when they get older.

Thank you, Marc and Hernán! Such amazing insight, perspective and tips! I really like your three folder system Hernán, and your thoughts on long sets. I also don't really use effects, and mostly use the eq to mix. I think I will give loops a bit more of a try because I like how you described the layering you do. Mostly my transitions layer for 96 beats in and then 96 beats or less out. I really enjoy this! Thx again! :)

He is so right. The majority of the new sets are just a collection of hectic drops and hands in the air moments which is so boring tbh. True DJs that take the crowd for a ride and experience is what it's all about. Hernan, Väth , Digweed, Sasha, Oakenfold, Warren are true masters of the craft. Thank god for these guys who are still playing and still moving crowds. New DJs need to just listen to Northern Exposure compilations to understand the importance of this concept.

Would have been nice to know whether you change up the tempo in such long sets, to instill more energy throughout the mix in a progressive sense. I was playing a lot on Khaosan road in Thailand and went about running from deep house, to tech house, and then i'd find myself running into more prog and then finally the techo weapons. I couldn't help but nudge that bpm up from say 123/24 right through to sometimes even 130pbm - but ever so gradually over 5 hours say.
