I'm a beginner drummer that's been playing for 15 years. I'm 68 and hit a wall so started taking lessons. I naturally shuffle so my instructor has had no luck teaching me 8's and 16's so he decided that if my brain gets the shuffle maybe I will learn to hit the bass dum in the middle. This is really helpful.

I don't think you're a beginner if you've been playing for 15 years haha

Playing shuffles is one thing. Putting the shuffles where they belong is another...the tough part. Groove is king. Listen well to the great shuffle drummers. Do what they do. Get behind the beat. Make it fat. Your bandmates must be of the same mind. How often have you heard that the guitar player is claiming that you are dragging?

Great lesson, I was looking exactly for this as an excersize for pads on a Alesis Vi49 midi controller and Ableton for making some Blues guitar songs.

Good job! I agree with how you presented this lesson on the shuffle, as far as starting slow. I have to keep from trying to speed up the tempo instead of getting a firm foundation first. I'm sure that'll apply to any drum lesson, so thanks for pointing out something I need to work on.

My favourite groove is the ‘rock shuffle’. An upside down regular shuffle with the ‘shuffle’ played on the bass drum and the quarter note played on the hands.

Excellent lesson, thanks! I've played drums forever and always been afraid to try a shuffle beat, lol! My only suggestion would be to carry out each exercise for 8 or more measures to give everyone a chance to get each one down. Great job, thanks!

I need help with shuffles bad! I can't manage to get my ghost notes quiet enough and it just doesn't swing right. I understand the notation and all that fine, I just can't get the velocity difference between the ghost notes and the main accent dynamic enough! Mainly referring to purdie shuffle type beats, somebody help!

Groove is the operative word. Just learning the shuffle is one thing. (shuffles I should say, there are many) Putting it where it belongs is another. Learn to play behind the beat. That is easier said than done. Develop your sense of time. It is so easy to thin out the groove by playing right on top of the beat. It may take you a lifetime to get that groove right. Listen to the great shuffle players. See how they bring the delay? They make the groove nice and fat. They are not pushin it, pullin it, or imposing themselves upon it. Ok, now go do that.

Play it with music as an example in the beginning instead of gruesomly dredging through talk and out of context snare tapping. Dreadful video. You gave no example of the type of music. Thumb down.
