Unless you've got another more convenient way of raising the question without spoiling the (precise) meaning given the particular context, the most appropriate/accurate and convenient way I can think of for this situation in general is to use "Which numbered" ?. i.e. Which numbered president of Sri Lanka, was Mr. Gotabhaya Rajapaksha ?. Which numbered item on the list, is in the colour red ?. Which numbered death anniversary of her, is coming this year ? ....

There is a correct way of asking this question. Check with an old Englishman. Howmany children are you in the family? Howmany brothers are you in the family? Howmany brothers is Mr Sarath in his family? Howmany Presidents is Mr Gotabhaya in Sri Lanka?

Here are some interesting ways to arrive at the same meaning of the beautifully convenient and succinct sinhala question කි වෙනිස ද? GR succeeds how many before him? After how many presidents comes Gota? How many presidents will Sri Lanka have had with Gota? If you want to find out in which position something or someone is in terms of a number in a list, you have to think in reverse. Ask how many are in the list before whatever you are talking of. In Germanic languages like English, cummilative time descriptions rely on context.

Though you have taken a generous effort to make a relatively complicated area in English more digestable for masses, the most suitable way of asking about, say Gotabhaya is, "In the chronological order of presidents in Sri Lanka, at which number does Gotabhaya Rajapaksha appear?" This can be generalized to ask all other questions you have discssed in this video. While applauding your efforts, I suggest you to provide a flavor of the most accurate form of using the language. It's one thing to know workarounds, but, having the right knowldge which might not be the simplest is vital. Thank you!

I know that's right, but no native speaker will ask that question like that. I actually considered including this particular method in the video and decided to omit it since it's not that common. It's precise but not common.

Yeah, this is another correct way of asking the question to get to know the position of the family , but be careful 😉 since it gives different meanings too ,like are you mother ,brother, father and so on. But many people use this way... LOOK AT THIS EXAMPLE In Sport * What position do you play; center or keeper? How so ever Among various patterns, using the word POSITION is the most suitable way ...

Gentleman, there is an accepted way of asking similar questions. Mr. Ghotabaya is the 7th President of Sri Lanka. How to frame a question to get the above answer. "How many presidents is Mr Ghotabaya in Sri Lanka?" I am the 4th child in my family " How many children are you in the family?" To verify, check with an old English Teacher or an educated Englishman .
