Maintaining vocal composure and having stamina is more than just having an "in shape" voice. It's about knowing how to navigate your different resonances and dynamic levels! Guys like Sam Smith and John Legend know how to pace themselves WELL and they show us how to practice resetting our voice and minds when we get locked into that 'one sound', 'one dynamic' trap!

Although many of the comments you've been getting are requests, I just want to take the time to thank you for your willingness to be insightful and demonstrative in your videos as I find this a great interactive experience. As a music student, I've recommended your videos to professors of mine and I just wanna sincerely share how grateful I am for your content! And even though I'm primarily a 'screamer' or harsh vocalist, I've gained something from each and every upload. Thank you Chris you rock 🤘

I would absolutely love a "How to sing like" for Devin Townsend, with those melodic fry screams, like Joe Duplantier of Gojira or early Jens Kidman.

I was just watching the acoustic Heads Or Tails, Real Or Not performance right before this video lol. Jonny is in very hot water so I understand if you aren't interested in tackling him Chris, but in case you wanted to check him out, here is the same song, one acoustic, one live performance: Acoustic: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/m61maqV9m8uxcZs.html Live: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iJ6Bq8Jo39mrnnU.html Different song with impressive live performance: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jLmGY7WdrNqtiYE.html Other amazing Jonny Craig songs are with his former band Dance Gavin Dance. His technique for raspy, belting yet soulful runs would be great to discuss :)

That's something I instinctly did at work ('cause I can' t make too much noise as a night auditor) since I work on my mixed voice... I find it easier than "full" mixed voice but I'm pretty sure it already helped me a lot. Much love Chris, you're the best, really.

All the great masters teach the same: work on the middle to reach all the range, gently first. I wasn’t wrong, you ARE a great master, let me tell you because I’m very cynical when I speak about this, and I mean it: you are a talented and gifted singer and communicator, which makes you also a fabulous teacher. Thanks, I’ll practice this exercise immediately

Thanks for doing these videos, I've learned a lot! I had recently "discovered" this area of my voice singing along with Boston's "Man I'll Never Be" and it's been exciting learning where this can take my singing. Another great song that takes advantage of this area of my range is the Eagle's "I Can't Tell You Why." Thanks again for verbalizing it for me!

Your channel is just so fascinating. Can't get enough! Thank you for all the content. From what I've seen, your "sing like" videos are the most in depth analyses on YT. I realised watching your videos today that some of my favourite singers are character singers (e.g. David Byrne - would love to see a breakdown of his voice - Alex Turner post the AM album too!) and it's given me the confidence to start being more playful in my singing.

A few weeks back PBS did a documentary on the origins of country music. Patsy Cline was one of the main focal points, which I found myself singing (just at tv volume)along to her video clips. After 7- 10 minutes of trying to imitate her style I noticed my voice had more presence resonance than usual, and I couldn't figure out why. Than I see this posting by you and the lightbulb turned on. Lol . She pretty sings exactly like you were displaying, quiet and easy through the break. Thanks for the great video and info..

When I go out for a night of karaoke, I might actually go from singing a song like Anthem of our Dying Day (with all the fry screams) to singing a Sam Smith song. It’s not just fun to sing such a contrasting style, but it also helps to calm the voice down after getting pretty extreme. Thinking about it on this technical of a level does show what to really focus on to get the most out of how to handle the break. He eases through that break like butter, and I never realized precisely how until this video!

6:42 You refer often to "tension in the neck". Is this outside (skin and muscles)? Or underneath the layers of muscle where the larynx etc are? Both inside and outside?
@chrisliepe

Both... the problem is when it is "competitive tension" Muscle engagement that actually works against your voice! Some tension is ok! ...But not if it is keeping you from your best!
@WhaleBluePRS
@WhaleBluePRS 4 жыл бұрын
@@chrisliepe Oh great, two MORE things to be monitoring! I'm still trying to release the tension from the first knuckle in my big toe and the flap of skin between my thumbs and index fingers on both hands.... (Totally kidding!) Good to know that where the potential problems lie. I do find the back of my neck and shoulders are problematic on a consistent basis. I'll monitor that whole area from shoulder to neck now as best I can.

@@chrisliepe ok so million dollar question here: How do you flip back to chest smoothly if you flipped to falsetto ? Cause I get how can I flip back and forth in between chest and mixed, but full on falsetto back to chest always has a “crack”. If it helps the song in trying to apply this to is Writings On The Wall, so I was wondering what to actually do to get that smooth tone all across my register

A suggestion for the "how to sing like" series. Tony Kakko from Sonata Arctica has a distinct sound and does some interesting things with his voice sometimes. Like at 1:54 in the song "The wolves die young" he does some kind of "scream" if you can call it that. Ive never heard anyone else do the same kind of thing.
