Finally! An instructor who actually pedagogically breaks down why things behave the way they do, not just run along like everybody else here on youtube! Subscribed and with Mr. McWhorter skills in my toolbelt, I can repay that by educating others in my area...thanks once again and glad to be onboard of this Fusion 360 train!

Paul, your a brilliant teacher. Even my 66 year old brain cells can understand what you are teaching. I keep forgetting what you have said so I have to keep pausing and going back to remind myself but I'm getting there, bit by bit. ( need a sledge hammer to get things to stay in my head ). Other tutorials just leave my brain a mush so gave up on them, but yours are great and I'm not dead yet so your doing OK.

Thank you Paul for these excellent videos on Fusion 360. I am on my 7th complete view-thru of Lesson 1. I follow along completing the exercises over and over. It is becoming automatic with me. I have done Lesson 2 and 3 the same way and am clumsily learning the dance. Today I am back to Lesson 1 to make sure I haven't missed anything. Your lessons are priceless to me as I learn this amazing program. I have used Rhino for years and am trying to migrate to Fusion 360. Finally, I am making real progress as I follow your lessons.

Yep, if there is one thing I understand is how to be confused by Autodesk products. They are so powerful, it is a hard area to break into. Sort of like C programming. Everything assumes you already know everything, so lots of tutorials are hard to follow. Still have not learned C type programming.

@@paulmcwhorter C is hard to digest but it pretty much the only programming language I use. I learned python but I felt like I was skipping a bunch of steps. Python does a lot of stuff for you in the background with C every detail is left to the programmer.

Your method of teaching Mr. McWhorter is truly A class and you're able to make the complexities boil to reasonable simplicities. Wonderful. Just the right amount of repetition to anchor concepts. Well organized and explained. Autocad site tutorials just have one do things without explaining the "why" very well at all, which makes it much harder to assimilate.

You got me started with fusion 360 (I know max well) and now I use it for things to 3d print often or now tend to goto it often. I started with the box that has the hinges, that one teaches everything well with the constraint parts of this and I feel decently confident to do simple things in it now. The box with the hinges would be the one to watch if youre only going to watch one.

Another 66-year-old brain here. I ran three software companies back in the 80s and 90s and was involved when the GUI on the Mac and PC (GEM and Windows) first came out. The design mantra back then (and ever since) was "selection precedes command" which meant that you always FIRST selected something by clicking with the mouse and THEN did something to it with the mouse or by clicking on something in a dialog box. Your tutorial is absolutely wonderful for clearly describing some of the ways this program breaks with all those conventions that have built up for the 40 years that the conventional GUI has been used (if you go back to the late 1970s and Xerox Parc and then the Apple Lisa). You very accurately described the journey I took prior to arriving at your channel: my son gave me a Ender 3D printer for Christmas; I built it and learned how to make Thingiverse objects (both activities, including using Cura, were a piece of cake); I decided I needed to learn how to make my own parts because 3D scanners just aren't good enough to create replacement/repair parts; I looked at all the CAD and modeling software and realized that I'd be able to do more if I could figure out Fusion 360 rather than learn a kiddie toy; I installed the software, I followed a few other tutorials, but then realized that even after hours of learning I couldn't even create and print a cube. So, thanks for an A+ first tutorial, and I now have some hope that I might actually learn this program before I die (at 66, "die trying" takes on a different meaning). John Meyer P.S. This thing still might be the death of me. Why? Because the designers seemed to have gone out of their way to do things differently, but without any reason. Case in point: center mouse wheel zoom. It works backwards from every other program in the universe. Why??? F1 doesn't bring up help, unlike every Windows program I've ever used or built. Why???

Paul I hate to bother you and first want to thank you so much for your videos. I recently purchased an enterprise seat with Fusion 360 in large part because I was confident I could master the program sufficiently after going through many of your lessons. I had tried CAD before and gave up because it was an illogical confused random mess. Not so with Fusion there seems to be an understandable congruent logic behind it. So I was feeling very blessed when I was awoken by my neighbors shooting a shotgun in the valley next to my home. See it made me remember I had seen an email about 1/2 price subscription so I pulled it up called and got a seat for under $250.00 with an hour to spare. I wanted an enterprise seat because I am seriously pursuing development of a commercial product that will have several patents involving a firearm. Hence my amusement that I was awoken by someone shooting in the nick of time, for the first time in the 15 years I have lived here. All good but to test my ability to learn my son opened a student account and that is what I practiced on to prove myself capable. Now I can't sign to do anything on my enterprise account and Autodesk help has not been. They said they were going to expire my sons account so it wouldn't auto log in and last night it didn't but this morning it did again. If I die trying just to sign into the account I paid for that would be a shame indeed. I have called emailed and did everything possible to remedy this clearing cashe uninstalling and everything else. As good as the program is Autodesk's login subscription and everything related is an unmitigated quagmire of a mess. They have help chat that really is a series of automated responses called Ava that isn't a real person. They have a picture of a person and give texts back like a person so how would you know? What a shame a company of this size can't even have a live chat person. Anyway if a reader or follower can possibly give some advice I would be very thankful.

Other videos just dive into making something and hope you'll learn along the way, but this video describes the fundamentals of how to use the software. @Paul Yes, Autodesk is great, but.... The only problem now is getting a PC with 64-bit capabilities.... I've tried the teachers version also and it too is a 64-bit ver.

you can use f360 for free as long as you live as a startup and as long as you don't earn more than 100,000 dollars per year you do not have to pay And if you earn more than $100,000 you CAN pay the program ! kind regards Hans

How do I get the Sketch tool bar? I have CREATE, MODIFY, ASSEMBLE, CONSTRUCT, INSPECT, INSERT & SELECT. And, where yours says MODEL (Upper Left) Mine says DESIGN. Ans SKETCH isn't available in the drop down.

great tutorial, thank you!! ... even coming from a good understanding of 3DS Max, I was very frustrated with Fusion,, this really helps to clarify. This is a GREAT example of how to make a proper beginners tutorial... explaining the concepts.

Hi Paul, I found your instructions on Tinkercad most helpful after my recent 3D printer purchase. I have downloaded the free student version of Fusion 360 and intend working through your 13 lessons. However, I have found that after selecting 'new design', my version of the ribbon is different to yours, so it is not straight forward to follow. Is there a solution to this, have I missed a trick somewhere? Thanks

Thanks for sharing this tutorial Paul. However, I found that on my Autodesk 360 (personal version) there is no nominal/construction option when I right click. I'm having to press x instead which then converts the line. Do you know whether the menu option has been removed in the latest version or do I need to change something in the settings? Many thanks

Please ignore this comment. It seems to be temperamental. Showing sometimes and not other times. Strange but there you go..
