Lorrie Popow from lorriepopow.com and pysankymaster.com demonstrates how to write pysanky for beginners. You will learn the basic techniques step-by-step in order to create a beautiful pysanka, which is a traditional Ukrainian Easter Egg. In the past, coloring and dyeing eggs occurred during Lent; however these days the art form is done all year long. This video is designed for the beginner, but can be used by others to review basic concepts. Music by the very talented Kevin McLeod at www.incompetech.com

I haven't done these in over 30 years. Learned from my mother using a straight pin stuck on the end of a pencil eraser, then graduated to the electric kistka. Back then I produced hundreds of eggs, but unfortunately never emptied them first. Still about 70% survived, but I live in fear that one will crack and stink up the house. This was a great complete tutorial and has inspired me to give it a try again. Thank you for the tutorial. I hope it keeps this obscure art form alive.

Thank You so much for this video. I appreciated all the extra information on different products that one can use. So often artist only show the way/things that they use and if youre not a very "crafty" person, you never learn about alternative things to use. Your voice was very kind also. You make it very easy to learn from you. This is something Im definitely going to try...I think I can do it.:) Thanks again!!

Now I understand! This finally makes sense to me. I did not know that you wash off the dye before going on to the next color. It never made sense that you put one dye on top of the other. I could not process this mentally. I may have to get out my pysanky supplies and give this a try, since I finally understand the process. Thank you very much for setting me strait. Great tutorial!!

Thank you charsbabushka. You can, and many do put one dye on top of the other. This is one of those techniques each artist needs to decide for themselves. Washing back is usually done when you are changing from a dark color to a lighter color. Or from one color family to another....yellow, orange, red, wash back to white before putting the egg into greens and blues. Again, thank you.

I did this once, when I was young, and it has always been a bit of a mystery to me. years later, I thought it would be fun to do this with a 10 year old I'm a big brother to. A co-worker is intrigued, and we're going to attempt these this English Easter. (not religious, but old habit) We've been combing the net to understand this whole thing, and I finally made it to KZfaq. I gotta say, I enjoyed this video. It was so very informative with all the different options on each task. Making Pysanka is something that I kinda understood the theory , but I never really grasped it. This video turned something that seemed intimidating into something I could actually do well. Oh, and seeing your egg come alive at the end. Wow!! Pretty cool!! :) I was going to do some further investigating at a small Ukrainian Store in the region, but thought I could ask you too... To drain, or not to drain; to go fake? The clean is a lot of work for sure. There is a solid chance of Connor wanting to show off his (Dr. Who inspired I'm sure) Pysanky at school, so yolk or no yolk it could break. My friend wants to go to a hobby store and buy fake eggs, and for the reason mentioned, I appreciate that. However, I think he would find it magical to have this "egg". Heck, so would I. Anyhow, I apologize for the novel. Dyakuyu
