50+ years ago my mother (from WWII Germany) sat me down and taught me first to darn socks and then hemming and the lost art of 'mending' rips or tears in clothing as you have beautifully demonstrated. Her grandmother taught her these skills in order to be able to look well dressed and tidy even in the midst of times of war and commodity shortages. I was born in America and know very few others who can, let alone are willing to, mend things. Most people just toss the item to then spend money to buy a new one. When my kids were young and I and my husband were in college, money was tight so I utilized my learned mending skills along with imagination to be able to keep their clothes tidy , clean and repaired. i have been using this stitching technique for over 30 years. when i was teaching, i tried to incorporate the "older" skills of crochet, knitting, darning, and embroidery as skills for my middle/high schoolers to practice during down time when they had completed their assignments. kept them quiet, taught them skills, they saw results for other uses, and they enjoyed the extra activities they were allowed. thank you for trying to show these to others. practice ... shaq didn't make baskets the first time he shot a basketball. :)

My mother, a tailoress, used to do this amazing invisible mending. Beautiful memories of her skillls as I watch this. However as she worked so fast I never learned the skills. I am thrilled to watch this video… thank you. ❤. She really saved the day when on the morning of my son’s wedding I was shortening my husband’s brand new suit trousers and cut one leg off at the wrong mark and well above ankle line!! I was distraught! Mum, in her late 80’s and with vision declining took the trousers and had performed this amazing mend on them, rejoining where I had cut. You could not see where the fabric was repaired and 😅 after me calming down and thanking her, the day was saved! We then enjoyed our son’s wedding all thanks to Mum. 😅😅❤❤

Magical skills, we must not let these beautiful crafting techniques die. We need them now more than ever. No more throw away clothes please!

Nice work. My mother was a tailor by trade and made all my clothes by hand when I was a kid. This video reminded me of the hours I spent watching and learning from her. She had me sewing on buttons at the age of 2! lol

I enjoy your sewing, it reminds me of my late parents and so wish I would’ve learned more from them. My mom was a seemstress and my Dad a tailor. I used to enjoy cutting patterns out with my mom and watch my dad make me a blazer(it doesn’t fit me anymore but I still have it). I’m not sure how old you are, but you seem young by the look of your hands, thanks for sharing.

Beautiful work! I was completely expecting you to trim the hole, put the fabric on the inside, and then work the stitches from the outside. I kept thinking it was going to show, but it is an invisible repair. Our favorite clothes are always the ones that get damaged! I guess because we like to wear them more often...

Hi I tried this repair. A few differences I noticed in my case is that my shirt was made of a silky rayon fabric. I couldn't get a clean square of fabric from the logo piece, but there was some extra fabric tucked away in a seam behind the buttons so I took some from there. The thread I used didn't perfectly match the colour of the shirt. I noticed the thread you use is very thin, can you tell be the brand? do they have different colours? I did a patch job, but some of the thread is visible and I don't like that. Thanks
