Couple of thoughts watching your great video: One thing I still do, after 21,000 full scale landings and probably more RC landings, is cheat by mentally connecting my thumbs on final through touchdown. If you find your aileron thumb is primary on final, follow it with your rudder thumb. Ideally, with a primary trainer type aircraft, your rudder thumb would be primary on final to eliminate most adverse yaw induced oscillations. Especially since you like big throws which equal big yaw oscillations. It’s hard too tell if you use differential aileron, it looks like you don’t, probably to maximize both throw directions. But it could help to mix that in on final. IOWs, you could make the ailerons travel around 2x more up throw then down throw to help keep the longitudinal axis from waggling. It’s important with a taildragger to have the fuse aligned with the rwy centerline at main gear contact, as the gear is in front of the CG, so any yaw angle present will increase when the gear touches, unlike a tricycle config which naturally reduces yaw angle with main gear friction. RC planes are usually light enough to stay weather vaned, but a full scale taildragger will ground loop if you touch down with much yaw angle. With a crosswind, and when using the wing low method, your rudder and aileron thumbs would decouple as you approach the round out to keep the yaw axis from rotating from straight rwy alignment, with aileron defected into the wind to prevent centerline drift. But I think RC it’s usually smarter to land into the headwind as rwys are a little more flexible and wind speeds are crazy magnified.

Appreciate the feedback for sure. It's tricky to land on 17ft of taxiway that I work with, so getting good quickly is important. I'll keep this in mind for future tutorials so there's more stick and rudder practice on display. What would also help is not filming a landing tutorial for this model after waiting a month since the last time I flew it on wheels - and get practice in beforehand. I think it worked in the end though, but things to note going forward.

@@TwoBrosRC Yeah, it’s a constant learning curve, that’s why it stays fun. With RC the weather and outside POV are way more challenging than full scale. But RC planes like that Timber are also immune to physics, so that helps.

It’s great to see young people out there practicing mastery of the physical world, while most are mastering instagram. Nice video. Nice flying. I especially like that you show your mistakes. Flying is always homing in on another lever, and there is always another level. So mistakes are a constant and our only teacher. The thing I love about RC is you don’t need an instructor if you can dwell with your comfort zone and give yourself cushion when ready to expand it. That leads to all kinds of innovative approaches to flying. And as we see, sometimes the teens who’ve taught themselves are arguably the best. Especially with helis which I can only fly like an airplane.

Haha, I'm not that young. I'm 38 - but to my average viewer I suppose I am sort of young. I grew up with the Internet though, and I work in social media management, so I have to balance things out a bit so I can get time to be outdoors and still get my work done as always. Flying IMO really is the best hobby. You can be as good at it as you desire. There's no pressure to be better - only your own willingness to improve.

Judging by my audience statistics, I do have quite a few viewers who are in their 60s to 80s and beyond. I also have a good mix of people in their 20s and 30s though. They'll be needed if this hobby is going to survive.

Nicely done Jon! Recently ended my Timber X’s flying days…😂 I always did three point landings with it and most of the time got it to land within 3-5 inches… sometimes in a little bit of wind I got it to touchdown and not move AT ALL!! I absolutely loved that thing. But now that I have the Extra 300 I think I might get the Turbo Timber Evolution! Basically got the Timber X to start some 3D flying. But yeah I have decided I need another Timber! 1.5m Evolution it is!😂

@@rctrucks2094 never had a wing rock tendency with mine! It stalled at very low speeds. Just gotta be really on it and ready for it. I give that plane a 8/10… landing gear wasn’t the most durable if you wanted to be rough on it like a bush plane. And also after hard 3D maneuvers my rudder became loose. Otherwise it’s a 10/10! Highly recommend on 4S. Thanks!

It really depends on the generation the Timber was made Gen 1 (red) and 2 (blue) have a weakness where the side-mounted screw connects, the thinnest part, breaks/snaps. Also, misaligned and wheel-rubbing gear needs to be fixed before flight this rubbing causes drag which makes the landing gear do the wiggles hard enough to spin the plane or break plastic/Styrofoam. Lastly - pay close attention to the vertical alignment - should be near Pyramid in shape or you have the wire loops where the screws are in the wrong holes. Some people have Top-Down "bounce checked" their Timbers stating it is now stronger than ever (which I am grateful e-Flight has upgraded/fixed) just remember Top-Down force isn't the main issue with older it is forward movement, thus backward force on gear where breaks happen - not much Top-Down with slams - never experienced my plane just drop from the sky. Last part where the wires and springs connect there is a tiny plastic, two screw box shaped holder - some have upgraded this with aluminum while others simply cut and drilled (very easy to do) a new, thicker plastic piece.

I noticed with crow you were coming in with quite a bit of throttle! First time I flew with crow the plane was nearly falling out of the air, cool to see yours reacting the same!

Yep they'll do that, which is why I mentioned that you'll need throttle to stay in the air to overcome all the drag introduced by the ailerons and flaps.

I have literally dropped it from 6 feet up in super windy conditions on my timber x and it just took it....and had a dumb moment and was flying one day and went thru a few packs and put on last pack in and didn't do another preflight and took off with reversed ael and ele....somehow managed to level it and bring her down with the gentle finesse of an elephant falling over and the gear is still solid haven't even had spring issues and I followed tail heavys recommendations and bought like 4 pairs of springs ....probly 40 flights and t or 6 bad bad landings and 2 crashes and she's fine still

Nice Landing Tutorial! Only issue I'm having with the Timber Evo is the foam tires breaking loose from the plastic rims and then major wobble effect. I've tried glue but doesn't last.

Yeah, that's happened to my original blue Turbo Timber. You could simply replace the wheels with DuBro wheels instead. The SuperLite wheels should work - they're about as heavy as the stock wheels.

@@TwoBrosRC are the superlites any softer than the stock foam wheels? I went ahead and picked up a full size timber evo after flying the UMX version, the stock foam wheels are so hard. Would love something softer without the massive weight gain of a dubro pneumatic tire.

Hardness isn't much of a concern, the spring absorbs most of the impact. The SL tires are a little firmer than stock but less likely to shear off.

He talks about EXPO a lot, which is cool but not everyone knows what he is referring too. Here's the explanation: RC Expo is also known as Exponential, or simply Expo. It reduces the sensitivity near the centre of the stick where fine controls are needed (for Roll, Pitch and Yaw), while retaining the maximum rotation speed at the ends of the stick. Expo is a percentage value. (sniped from google)

No need for a tutorial. It just deadens input around the midpoint of the stick. Add expo and test it, you'll see it in action.

GREAT video as usual Jon. BUT, I have to throw my 2 cents in. STEP ONE. Buy a Tundra, or a Grand Tundra instead. As well as the Timbers fly, their Glass Slipper, Tinker-bell landing gear absolutely sucks for a Bush Plane. Every flight has a landing, and the Tundra's have superior Bush Plane landing gear. I love my Timber X, but I finally had to put Grand Tundra landing gear in it. NOW I finally have a complete Bush Plane out of the Timber X. I also have the Tundra V2 which is a fantastic Bush Plane with Real Bush Plane landing gear. The Timber landing gear is way too narrow, and needs to be located 2 or 3 inches more forward of the C/G. Like on the Tundra's

The e-flite air tractor axles can't handle the cold. I find that strange when they offer skis as an add-on listed in the book. There is my gear conjecture. Lol

IMHO the best Crow mix is combining it with throttle - as you close throttle Crow deploys. When you open throttle Crow goes away. I have it like that on my Mamba 10 G2. I'm about to put it on my Timber X. - less fiddling for switches.

That's a good idea, but you wouldn't get a lot of benefit out of it if you needed that power to maintain a sink rate. You'd just throttle out of the sink and fly off. ;)

There are a lot of full scale video's on doing slips that are very good. The same thing applies to our models and I'm getting more practice with this as the new field I fly at has a cross wind pretty much all the time so it forces me to learn the slip. What's more important is preventing ground loops and straitening out with rudder just before touch down.

Hold back elevator pressure when landing, get the CG to further aft for more tail authority, and increase elevator travel.

You mentioned you use 150% travel on all surfaces. I was told it would damage your servos if you pushed them passed 100%?

Whoever told you that is wrong. The only damage you'll get to servos is if they bind or jam while trying to move - e.g. you move a surface so far that it hits something and the servo kills itself trying to push through it. 150% is the full range of motion of a servo's PWM signal.

Definitely consider upgrading to a NX8 or NX10! You'll be able to adjust things a bit easier. Links should be in the description if you'd like to support us with a purchase. Otherwise you can try following the manual which does provide some info on how to assign SAFE to a switch, but it's a less than ideal process to set up.

Man I'm glad I don't have to fly at that field with that close tree line. I would seriously find another flying field. I have a park that I fly at that the tree line is much further away but it is still challenging to get down over the tree line to set up for a decent landing. On fields that don't have those obstructions near the landing area it's a piece of cake to land virtually any plane.

I’m using DX9, my TTE has 2 Y harnesses on ailerons and flaps. How is he getting his ailerons to do crow? Oh, i see that you addressed that and i’ll check it out.

I see you switched to a different prop. I also had my second landing which was might lighter than any landing you did in this video and broke a spring. I believe those springs are a bad design if you look closely. The small half circle is where the spring is brittle. Maybe it was a bad one but lots of people complaining about those springs.

I think you got a bad batch. I've flown Timbers for over two years and have only broken springs in the last few months which required slamming the aircraft into the ground.

Any chance you can make a video on how to clip aileron connectors & set up for crow feature ? I replaced the rudder & elevator servos as you recommended- very helpful. The 3 blade prop works very well- your upgrade, does it work better ?

Two Brothers- I switched my prop out to a 13x4 & measured output- 40.5 amps- 600 watts- it's about 15% less- yes less than 3 blade- 4s 3300 50c battery. I haven't flown it yet. Any vented spinners availible you know of ? It's 45 mm ?

@@bobd676 No spinners we know of. 3200 is pretty heavy for a Timber. 2200 is all we'd recommend on it with how heavy it is stock.

I'm going to try full-span flaps as a mode on mine. I love crow, but now I'm curious.

Be forewarned, full span flaps is going to require a lot of dancing with the rudder stick to maintain level flight. You'll be much more likely to hit the aircraft's critical AoA and drop a wing. It'll also get very mushy feeling. Try it at least 100 feet up if you use stock throws. If you use my throws, you can do it 50 feet or below without worry. I've tested FS flaps on this model before and definitely didn't like it.

I noticed you don't have the front slats installed. Do they actually make a difference in flight or just for looks?

They absolutely make a difference, but it's for the worse. They actually seem to disrupt airflow over the wings coming out of post-stall maneuvers (flat spins, etc). It takes more effort to fly with slats than it does to fly without them.

@@TwoBrosRC I've heard the slats are "worse" here and from someone else who does aerobatics. However, I'm wondering if they help with slow-flight and STOL since they increase the wing area as well as wing camber to help increase lift.

@@TrailcamsRCPhotoFlying2000 They don't seem to do much at this scale aside from interfere with airflow and stall recovery. You can fly just as slow with them as you can without, and the model is more aerobatic overall without the additional wing area reducing its roll potential.

So my issue was with the springs on the gear...bit of a hard landing but no harder than I've had on my AeroScout. Anyway, the spring on one side stretched. Now it was still flyable the plane just sat awkwardly. Maybe E-flite could beef up the springs?

They could, but that just increases weight for the airframe to carry which reduces its aerobatic potential and makes it harder to fly. The ultimate solution to gear springs is to make landings moderate to light impacts.

We're using an IX20 which reads text to speech. That isn't possible on a NX radio unfortunately. You'll have to pick something that sounds similar, like "braking" or whatever the preset info is. You could also record custom audio from TTS and have the radio read the audio file if you load it on a SD card, but we can't advise on how to do that because we haven't used one of the DX style radios in years.

We fly all of our models with AS3X and only use SAFE for insect attacks or checking the transmitter screen.

Why a 2 blade prop versus the original 3 blade?

It's more efficient - takes fewer amps to fly throughout the throttle range - and has more thrust. 13x4 is a better choice than 11x7 with three blades.

I just bought this timber today. Haven’t flown yet. It’s my second plane after the aeroscout. I only have the aeroscout transmitter so I can’t use the flaps. Does this mean I will just be landing at a faster speed? Wish me luck.

It does, but you can manage your airspeed using forward slips. Using rudder in one direction and some aileron to counter it in the opposite direction, you can drop a lot of airspeed without flaps.

@@TwoBrosRC Looks like the DXS that came with the aeroscout has different modes. Think any of the modes will work with flaps? I think the D switch for auxiliary didn’t do anything to the aeroscout

@@TwoBrosRC thanks for the responses. I have connected the DXS on the original mode. Did not change any receiver settings and for some reason the flaps are stuck down.

Hey man i need some help. Flew my timber evolution for the first time today. Flys great but i cant land it right. Ive got experience landing other planes no problem but with this plane when i touch down i cant steer it at all. I can land like butter with no bounce and the plane will just start drifting off to the right and it noses over every time.. how the hell do u steer these planes after they touch down? The back wheel doesnt touch the ground so its useless.. and turning the rudder doesnt help steer it at all either.??? Any ideas?

Hold elevator pressure with a taildragger, especially on grass. You'll see me doing it throughout this vid. Otherwise it risks flipping over because the wheels act like a fulcrum point which allows the tail to loop over them. You use rudder on the ground to steer as you can see in the transmitter camera.

Great basher plane to learn some skills with, some cut one loop in landing springs How do you make these voltages to read out while flying? Could use the stock receiver to do the Crow effect with flaps? How did you set your rates higher then 125, I'm using the NX10 Tx

13x4. 13x5 is probably doable too, but 13x4 is the right balance of power to amp draw.

@@ianmorrow679 Checked the ESC load in the transmitter telemetry - I'm pulling a much lower amount of amps vs the 11x7 or the 12x6 I was using and the ESC runs much cooler at an average of 150f instead of the 230f it was hitting before.

If you would be so kind to look into this for me please. I have a timber evo bnf stock and I use the nx6 transmitter. When I push my throttle up or down there seems to be a delay before there is any response on the motor spinning. All my other planes have a slight delay which you would expect with radio signals but on my timber evo the delay is noticeably longer. Adjusting the throttle whilst learning to hover is making things quite hard for me. Do you guys know what I’m talking about and is it normal? Can I change any settings on my nx6 to speed up the throttle response?? Any help is appreciated thank you.

Very nice but regretfully will not be able to experiment as i discovered the plane simply will not fly through a tree! Fuselage remains about 110’ up, wing is still waiting for it to come down.

@@michaelkrailo5725 Took a few months but finally came down. Battery dead of course and rudder servo bad but otherwise only a few small dents. Flies again!

No, all the Timbers gear and wheels suck, that’s been continuously the number one complaint about those planes since their inception, first thing that’s broken on everyone’s Timbers
