In today’s video Jimmy The Plumber will be showing us how to pipe up a column radiator which has been hung on to plasterboard. As for piping a radiator up, you can firstly see Jimmy explain what a drop down leg is (i.e. where a radiator is being fed from just a few radiators on the floor above). This is important as you’ll need to make sure you have parallel pipes coming down to feed the radiator at both sides. Jimmy shows us how to do this and also install a drain off on the radiator, in order to make any future drainage easy to do.
If you’re looking solely for guidance on drop down pipes, the 1:00 mark of the video is the best place to start. You can see how he mocks up where the valves will be and guides you through the best practice for getting valves set up.
Jimmy then explains where each pipe needs to go in the radiator and guides us through marking out where these pipes will need to be with a spirit level and why the pilot holes need to be made before we begin any soldering. You can then see Jimmy put more clips in place which are needed to correctly place our secondary pipe under the radiator.

would I be able to use to use 2 15mm compression elbows to get my radiator pipes current distance of 650mm to 600mm as it would help a lot!

I cut my pipes too short, they are a few mm under the actual trv valve so the olive won’t bite, probably have to start all over again

I don’t know if this is relevant but could use advise if anyone is willing, i live in an old building built in 1860 and today I hung a board up above my radiator. Due to the board being so heavy I used large nails and on one nail it would only go in about 3/4 of the way, I assumed it was because it hit brick in between the plaster wall but now I’m unsure and overthinking what if I’ve hit a pipe also what if it is a gas pipe? Any advice?

Hi. I've fitted a straight replacement type 22 rad in place of an old single panel radiator that's on a drop down feed system and the new radiator won't heat up properly, old rad got red hot and this one just won't do it, i'm gutted as this one was supposedly going to be 80% more efficient !! the system is pressured and radiators all round the house bled so can't see why it won't get hot, all valves open fully to allow flow through the radiator. anything i'm missing that will solve my problem?? thanks

This is a late reply to your query but it may help anyone else with a similar problem. There are 4 reasons why you can get no heat after fitting a new rad; 1)The system became unbalanced when you shut off all other rads to drain down. Check this by turning off all rads exept the new one, and see if you now get heat through. If yes see any vid on balancing systems. 2) You have a faulty rad, blocked internally. This is very rare. 3) You disturbed crud when draining down, more common in microbore pipe, which has blocked either pipe or valve. For 3, check with the bucket test by disconnecting each valve from the rad in turn, and open the valve into a bucket to prove there is flow through the pipe/valve. Either may be blocked. 4) System is airlocked, see any vid on clearing airlocks. Hope this helps.

Would i be able to remove 1 section of the radiator thats cracked and put back together without that section. Will my radiator still work?

How do you make a radiator so that the TRV is at the top? I hate bending down to adjust those things and I want my 2 new radiators downstairs to benefit from having the pipes coming from above and being able to install the TRV at the top rather than bottom.

Cold air is heavier than warm air, so its more useful to have your trv lower

Silly question if you wanted the pipes in the wall. Could you run them behind the skirting? Or is this not a good idea due to future work changing the skirting and maybe needing to drill the skirting?

you could run them in front of your skirting and just box it off so it will look neat.

With deep rads like these you could consider fitting the valves horizontally, that way you would only need one bend.

PS what Jimmy should have mentioned is, when fitting valves to the rad put loads of ptfe tape on the threads, a few turns is never enough and it will leak. Nearer ten to make sure.
