My previous trainer would always get angry with me for taking my time when I started clipping nails. I was super nervous about it and working at my pace, keeping the dog calm, trying to keep myself calm to build confidence and my trainer would just get so angry with me and it was the same with trimming pads with the clippers I knew dogs are iffy about their feet and you should take the time you need to ensure the dog is safe as well as yourself but my trainer apparently didn’t feel the same way.

This is so helpful, thank you! I inherited my grandfather's dog just over 5 weeks ago. Because he was only groomed every 6 weeks, and the groomer said we'd not need to trim his nails in between sessions, I assumed I could wait 6 weeks to trim his nails. We've stopped seeing this groomer due to various reasons. I've taken on all grooming duties, and your channel has been a huge help.

I am training to become a dog groomer just now and I have got a disability so am struggling a little as I need to sit and groom as my balance isn't good. I was cutting a dogs nails today and I accidently made the dogs nail bleed I feel so bad especially when it was her first time at a groomers and she's a puppy. Your dog grooming videos are really helping me and gradually getting there slowly so much to take in and my assessment is in November.

You're a nice calm teacher and groomer I see so many groomers who move so fast and frantically that you can tell it stresses the dog out. I hate seeing that. Especially cause most of the groomers blame the dog instead of themselves.

I have an 15 year old Shit-Zu/ Toy Poddle mix. She began to loss her vision about 4 years ago. She has been getting groomed by the same groomer since she was a puppy. When her groomer retired I had no choice but to choose someone else. She has never had a problem with the process. Until her last visit, the new groomer told me she was bitten by my dog & I felt horrible. I also realized my dog didn't trust the environment anymore. I decided to go online (Amazon), and purchase the item to do it myself. I had no idea what to do when the order arrived. Here I was with almost $175 worth of pet grooming supplies & no idea what to do next. YOU SAVED MY LIFE. ME & MY DOG ARE VERY GRATEFUL & SHE NEVER ONCE TRIED TO BITE ME. EVEN WHEN I CUT HER NAILS. I GROOMED MY DOG I CAN'T BELIEVE IT. THANK YOU SO MUCH.

You have been a lifesaver! With the Shelter-In-Place requirements, I've not been able to go to my groomer. I bought all the tools and equipment recommended: clippers, scissors, grooming table, dryer and with your help I groomed my dog for the first time, ever! Even did the nails. I'm determined now because of the investment. I have such a HUGE RESPECT for groomers, that I didn't realize before! It's a LOT of work but very rewarding. I confess if I hadn't bought all this stuff, I'd want to take her back to the groomer. As it is , I will do the bulk and take her in less frequently but still regularly to get the real deal. You are a wonderful instructor! Thanks, anytime I need hands-on-info I always look for your videos and nobody elses. Also, I'm Deborah not Jason; he's my son.

I think your message to us viewers is so crucial! I’m a keep on top of it, de-shedding over shaving owner, I have two Aussies and know a lot about their double coat, what to do and Not to do but my one struggle or apprehension has always been nail trimming! When I was little I observed my Dad trimming our Visla’s nails and suddenly a loud yelp, 🩸 blood and ever since I can’t even imagine trimming my babies nails... however, I have to get over that! I’m a do it myselfer and my smaller Aussie tends to nip at her paws and nails and I realized recently when walking it hurts her to walk. I’m typically good about removing access fur in her pads, again though I avoid the nails and that’s shame on me! Well yesterday after checking her pads for stickers, etc finally my brain worked and it’s due to her nails being long. So I’ve been researching the hell out of trimming nails, I’ve purchased the same clippers because they seem to be the sharpest on the market which I learned was important as you don’t want to crush nails and hers ik are sensitive enough as it is. I guess now my concern is actually commuting to trimming which I will after more how to videos lol, but is it typical for nails to crack and chip? I mean obviously no, but hers have always cracked and little pieces would be found in the carpet, etc so idk if it’s due to not trimming enough on my part or her nails are just brittle? Mine are terribly brittle but I’m human so my personal experience doesn’t count. Anyways, thank you for sharing! I have to say if Groomers, in my case Vets would educate their clients each and every visit as you have in this video a lot of pet parents would be more mindful. We don’t know what we don’t know but when we’re taught to be weary of over grown fur in the pads, long nails being as important as anything else then we as owners can make all the difference and bare minimum ensure we’re paying a pro to cut/trim etc.

hi! i hope you've gotten your answer by now but in case you haven't, cracking/flaking nails are typically a sign of needing more omega-3's! incorporating salmon oil into their diet is a great idea:)

@@vierots Actually no but your response is helpful! Since my question I bought a nail grinder and my mini Aussie does much better with that over clippers although I do use them if I have to. And I’ve also converted to feeding raw, that includes using fish oil and thank you for your response because her cracked/chipped nails have improved dramatically, I just hadn’t thought about it but I rarely ever see chipping anymore. I took my dog to the vet for the nail trim. He was difficult for me to hold and try and trim nails. They charged $30.00 and the dog got 1 nail trimmed-- that was it. It seemed the secretary at the vets trimmed the nail and he did not want the rest done! So she did not do them and sent him home. When I called about the price and that 1 nail was done. I was told that was all he would allow and I could have him put to sleep for the trim. I would love a detailed nail trim video for a shih tzu, yes that is his breed.

Can you do another updated session like this with a vet tech in training? It is beneficial for us at home trying to get our pet nails trimmed to learn off them also.

I bought a portable table and it has a rope with a loop at the top of the arm which is great. What are you using on this little dog that is attached to the colar and goes around the lower end of the pole? I can see where that would be helpful to have for my two little miniture Austrailan Shepherds.

Excellent video! I have three dogs and so afraid to clip their nails. Our vet charges $15 per dog for a trim. Unaffordable for me to pay every month. Thank you for this video, so many great tips! 💕🦋🌸 I subscribed and liked!

I’ve got a Shih poo and Shih tzu that have black nails..now I have heard that some dogs have long quicks. How do I know how much to cut? Is there a trick to which I can find the quick before clipping? Also, my Shih poo has hip dysplasia, how do you handle those situations? Thank you for all the information you share! You’re amazing!

You are so awesome! Our new dog is adopted and she came to us with too long nails. She does NOT go for the clippers, so I switched to a grinder and I am grinding a tiny bit every other day. She doesn't love it but she tolerates. Am I doing enough do you think? Thanks so much!!!

You're videos are great and I've learned so much. I still mangle my poor dog but it's getting better. Next question, though. My dog is really jumpy during nail care. I'm afraid to clip nails because she jerks and shakes. Is there something out there that doesn't involve clipping. I've seen grinders but they are big. We used to Dremel the dane's nails, but this prissy poodle ain't havin none of that! She's so tiny and I'm afraid I'll squish her trying to get her to hold still. The clippers just aren't getting the job done. Thanks^^

I swear I have to trim mine once a week. His nails grow so fast! This way I can take off just a tiny bit every time, which makes it way faster and less intense for my guy who hates it. Now he barely cares because it’s a non event.

Go Groomer, so what we are looking for when cutting is pink. When we see the pink then we stop. In the past when I first did it I cut the quick a little but I put on the medication immediately. I’m not good at this but I’m getting better. I mostly Dremmel the dogs nails and they seem to like it better. I would prefer to cut the nail then dremmel to smooth out the edges. Do you have a video about dremmel?

My dog must've had a bad experience because the last time I tried he screamed like I was beating him, but today I finally had enough and decided it had to be done. (They aren't horrible.) Just look like they might be starting to be uncomfortable. He's not really getting the walks he's used to because of all the snow. His back claws are doing really well, but the front ones needed attention. So I just layed with him in the bathroom let him lay on a pile of my dirty clothes and just took my time with the first paw making sure to call him a good boy after each nail. Petting him, feeling when he was shaking and just comforting him in general. When I got done with the first foot I gave him a jerky stick. The next paw I did in less than 30 seconds. I do have a question though. How often should I trim his nails? I don't feel comfortable doing more than one little cut at a time. His nails aren't really an issue when he's walking around. I'll just hear a tap on the tile every once in a while, but they are to long. He's a 100lb German Shepherd and when he stands on hardwood or tile his nails are maybe a playing card or two's distance from the ground. So when he's running I'm sure they're hitting the ground in an uncomfortable way. I'd like them to get a better length for him and then get him on a consistent appointment at the clinic here in town so they can get it to the appropriate length.

You are awesome. I've been watching a bunch of youtubes to help me feel more secure (less anxious) and more knowledgeable. You really helped! My yorkiepoo gets vicious (that's what the vet said) when I take him in to get his nails trimmed. And when I try, he gets very upset. He's almost 14 years old. And I am very sad with myself that I let him run the show and now his nails are way too long. Do you have a suggest for how to cut very long nails on an old dog?

Happy to help! Trimming a very long nail is the same as this demo. Take small amounts until you see the black dot in the center of the nail.

I am pet owner who lives in the stix so no groomer nearby. Black toe nails & long black toe hair- so I try to cut the hair away from the nail 1st. She will let me clip the nail but I rarely clip it short enough and I am not happy with the clipper- do not think it is sharp enough. Miller Forge is out of stock.
