In this episode, I dive deep into the dark, ominous, and haunting atmosphere created by Moussorgsky in "A Night on Bald Mountain." I discuss the unique harmonic palette that he uses (F Lydian#2, the Chromatic scale, etc) as well as the approach used in Orchestrating these ideas (This piece was actually orchestrated by his friend Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov).

Fantastic harmonic and orchestral breakdown. It is really fascinating what Mussorgsky's doing harmonically and what Rimsky-Korsakov does with the orchestration

Thanks! I learned so much about composing from examining this piece. Although looking back at the animation in Fantasia with this music behind it I don't know how that didn't give me nightmares as a child! : )

I don't know why i don't like the sound of these classical pieces. But I love orchestral music in videogames. Can you try analysing some videogame music in future videos? Regarding scary horror music, a piece that seems to use the principles in this video is a track called Cleric Beast, from Bloodborne. And others soundtracks from the darksouls series.
