I have just completed the second module of Paul Davids Beginner Guitar Course called Learn Practice Play and this was my experience with it.
Paul's course is available here: learnpracticeplay.com/signup/
If you haven't seen any of my videos before I am a beginner guitar player and I track my progress here on KZfaq and also try out different beginner guitar courses so that you can see what they are like to play through.
It would be fantastic to hear from you along the way, so reach out and share your experiences with me.
Cheers, Luke

Really nice! Love those tones you’re getting out of the Katana. Hmmm... maybe a video for how you’re setting the amp up? Makes me wonder about trading in my Yamaha thr10 for a boss...

Good idea! There are a lot of tones that can be created and there is Tone Studio where you can download all sorts or tones made by others. I think the Yamaha has something similar though?

Great to see you progress with guitar. I've been playing since I was 14 and I am now a bit above your age so kinda bummed I can't take the Paul Davids courses and learn guitar all over. It's great fun! :) Anyway... what I find particularly helpful is to tune your guitar perfectly several times during playing. You kinda learn guitar just by making it sound right. And it won't sound right if a string is out of tune. I noticed some of your strings are out of tune. Help yourself to progress and be very strict about that, and you'll see it really works.

It is so much fun! and Paul's beginner course is really interesting and has a good mix within it and not much focus on one thing. I will take note 😉 of the tuning. I did tune it before I started but it must have fallen out and my ear doesn't hear that yet. Thanks for the support.

@@MidlifeGuitar Guitars are strange beasts... they can fall out of tune by heat, or because of tuning a string down, because of bending a particular string too far, or roughness in the nut. And ofcourse they fall out of tune by tuning just once: the changing string tension while tuning affects the other strings. My way of tuning a guitar (with a tuner): * If all strings are flat, I overtighten the bass E string a bit. This will compensate for the added tension of the other strings and will minimize the amount of runs you need. * Always tune a string up: if it's slighly sharp, I make it way flat, then tune up. Overshoot? Tune it flat and try again. This takes the play out of the mechanisms. * I tune in the order of base E to high E: the added/substracted tension diminishes going forward in this order. * On an electric I normally play a piece with quite some bends to get the play out....sometimes a string will shift out of tune very rapidly. * After I complete tuning all strings, I make another run: this will actually tune the guitar. I found there are a lot of bad tuning apps for your phone, which actually lag behind the frequency etc. I found guitartuna to work well for my use. Hardware tuners I don't use as much anymore. I think I used a Sabine PIK which are great tuners, don't know if they make them anymore. Tuning by hand is a different story. I have been tuning with harmonics for much of my life but always found the resulting tuning a bit 'off'. Also the position 5-0 / 4-0 going from string to string gave me mixed results as you add error on error from pressing the string down. What I do now is to first tune the G string on a pitch/note I want to tune to....play A string on 10, play D-string on 5 to tune them to G. Then play G on 4 to tune B, then play G on 9 to tune the high E. Then use 12th harmonic on low E to tune to high E open string. Of course, I then tune G again to the source and repeat when I made significant adjustments. Seems like a lot of work, but your ear will develop rapidly if you always tune your guitar meticulously. "Take note" of the tuning ... you're as corny as I am ;)

That 12 bar blues improvisation you did at the end was really good. My improvisation sounds nothing close to that, and now I think you make me sound a bit more robotic :D That Strat is nice, I want one, and a Tele, and a 335, oh and then a Gretsch, and...Damnit! I hardly pick up my electric now & pretty much do everything with acoustic. My electric & amp just don't give me what I want I guess, and I need to fix that. Keep on it man, you're killing it!
@MidlifeGuitar

Thanks Rich, it is just what you learn on his course and then apply to his backing track sounds cool though and getting the timing right makes it sound so much better. Ooo I would love a 335 I actually like the look of the american made Epiphone Casino too. A trade in a for a new amp might help you, I am really enjoying the Katana but would like to try a Positive Grid Spark also.

@@MidlifeGuitar Yeah, as soon as shops open back up here I might trade it in or sell it on Craigslist. I was looking at the Katana because from what I see it is nice, but yeah, the Spark I think I would like better with the config options & definitely the size. Even thinking of just getting an audio interface & using Bias FX or whatever it is called from Positive Grid with a set of speakers I already have on my desk.

@@nixternal One thing I would say is that the Katana isn't good as an audio interface. You can record from it and I have but you have to really increase the gain on it to get enough volume into a DAW and it still doesn't sound loud enough. I ended up buying a Scarlett Solo so I record the Katana through that. If you are looking to record and mess around with sounds then an audio interface will be great bang for the buck and you can skip the amp altogether.

@@MidlifeGuitar I screwed up, I bought the solo in January but it caused an issue with my machine & I really didn't know what I was doing with it. I wanted to do the computer as an amp & went about it all wrong. So I returned it. I think I'm going to get the new Evo 4 because I wouldn't mind playing with mics on the acoustic guitar too. I will say the Solo is actually good when you finally figure it out. I noticed absolutely no latency with it. If I would have just gotten some TS 2 RCA cables I could have done exactly what I wanted, but I just didn't take my time. Wanted instant gratification, and I lost ;D

Ty for sharing your progress! It’s really inspiring me! It looks like Paul David’s does not emphasize songs as much as other teachers do. Do you find this is making the journey easier? I’ve had situations where I enjoy the songs but I’ve also found it to be kind of frustrating too.
@MidlifeGuitar
@MidlifeGuitar 4 жыл бұрын
You're so welcome! and good question. You are absolutely right in that Paul's course doesn't place emphasis on learning songs. Learning this way gives you more confidence at an earlier stage than say in Justin's classic course. I say this because you are learning melodies and little solos along with a good variance of other things like scales and open chords.This does make it a bit easier and it also feel like you are covering more ground. I don't think you would find this course frustrating and you could supplement it with learning songs when you wanted to.

How are you liking that Katana? Is that a 50? I have a 5W tube amp but would like something different for practicing.
@MidlifeGuitar
@MidlifeGuitar 4 жыл бұрын
I am loving the Katana and it is a 50W MK2. It is a great practice amp and the tone studio where you can download all sorts of tones created by others with more experience than me can make it sound great. It also has a .5W, 20W and 50W setting so you can play it a low levels, (good for me in the evenings when kids gone to bed) as well as really crank it out it you want to!
