In this tutorial we take a look at a cool feature of Grain that we can use to "chop", or sample songs/audio and have grain automatically calculate playback speed base on our song tempo.
This is a really cool feature for experimenting with and creative inspiration.

Love this method! Thanks for sharing, really useful when exploring longer samples (which is sometimes quite a painful and laborious sampling task)

Yes this is exactly what I needed, I was so close to giving up on grain and just using the king for sampling, but this is great

This is a nice method for one slice. When you want to mess around with more than one slice of the sample and rearrange them this becomes a very impractical method. It's not an MPC method of "chopping" cause it chops to just one slice.

Awesome. Yeah, don't give up on Grain it's capable of a lot! I find the biggest thing to keep in mind is that the sample you choose to use is critical! Also, don't sleep on the modulation matrix and using it to route the envelops and LFOs to different parameters...

Just wanted to leave some constructive criticism for you. It would be much more efficient to have the thoughts drawn out before putting them in video. From ~ 6 to ~11, it is just seeing you navigate through the sample to find what you want to work with. Granted you had a couple things you pointed out in those 5 minutes, but those could've been addressed rather quickly (for instance, your thoughts on keytrig/repeat looping took an almost an entire minute when it would've been addressed in 5-10 seconds, tops). Yes, everyone has their way of making vids, and the depths to which you want to touch on certain aspects, but I feel this video should've taken no more than 3 mins.

I'm quite aware that many of my videos are a bit slower at times and I may include time in my videos when I am searching for something, etc., which some may think I should leave out. But, when I was beginning music production I would have LOVED to see the organic, 'behind the scenes' searching and tweaking that people do, so that I can see how they work when performing a particular task. Now a days, everyone wants things RIGHT NOW. I can't stand it. People have no patience or appreciation for anything. This is just the nature of my videos, slower and detailed. There are plenty other tuts out there that folks can watch if they are dissatisfied with my format. That's what the back button in the browser is for.

Nice info. Is there a way to trigger different areas of the sample for variety sake?
@quantaaudio
@quantaaudio 6 жыл бұрын
No, there's not. But, just keep in mind that, this is not meant to be a replacement for things like the MPC or a VST like Serato Sample...it's more of a nice work-around for folks like myself who cannot afford these devices! I just think it's pretty awesome that Grain will do the re-calculations on timing and pitch, as I make my adjustments. One method that I use to add variety, is that, after I've found a section/sample of audio that I like, I'll right-click on the Grain and just duplicate it; and in this way, I have a new Grain with the same sample already loaded, etc., and can just quickly move on to choose another part to add variety.

What are you pressing to preview this sample? I press space bar and it just plays the track I'm sampling without any of the changes I made on Grain. If I press the play button in the upper corner it does the same thing. What do you play to preview the sample with edits in Grain?

Searching a good position int he sample with that [inaccurate overview bracket style] is not very good solved, why not by moving the indicators?
@quantaaudio
@quantaaudio 4 жыл бұрын
The indicators can only move within the area that the bracket is focused on, so if I want to broadly go through a long sample as I'm doing in the video, it just works better for me to use the bracket. Of course, folks are free to use whichever method suits them. I think the sample position controls just need an updated design for navigating samples...perhaps in an update!

@@quantaaudio Thats the point and the lack of Reason. i use reason but do more give beef against whats wrong as working with R10 actually. its simply not like FL oder Bitwig but i like a lot that routing complexity for instruments, that give so much creativity. A cold jump into reason is just a pain. i watch around for good tutorial and i like that on from Paul Ortis "Making Synthwave"...also your Tutorials are very helpful. so dont wory...i just beef around :) - hate love reason

@@quantaaudio i´v seen that you can strech the View-Range by reposition the brackets, then the indicator works on the whole sample, but not helpful if you want to be accurate. --- Another Questions Sir. I try to make Glitch or Breakcore, means fast but controlled rhythms, but i dont find a easy way yet. In my mind i have Artists like Aphex Twin, Ruby my dear. Technics like "Chopped by another/ every sample", reverse Slices, Slices filtered and also with effects. i found that Octo Rex can do well but slices can not moved to other positions except re-arranging in the "damn*" sequencer...do you have any ideas about?
