The only real disadvantage to the alphabet still is if you want to be able to write it by hand. I love hand written notes, but Russian is written in cursive which looks different from the printed script we read on our phones. So I’ve been having to double down on learning the cursive as well.

Another tip for learners is to set your mobile language to Russian. You might not understand some words and it’s a bit difficult at first, but you eventually get used to it. I feel like it boosted my reading skills a bit, and taught me so many new words. Edit: also listen to Russian music! Russian rock is amazing. One of the reading exercises that I do is read the lyrics while the music is playing.

I am fluent in Russian and I think your advices are really helpful to anyone trying to learn it. I want to give all the luck to people who are learning it because it is a difficult language. Unlike english the words change differently. For example, in English you can say Jump. Or jump over, jump under, you are not changing the word, you are adding another one to it. In russian however, you add before the word like this прыгнуть, перепрыгнуть, подпрыгнуть, запрыгнуть... plus russian has the 7 падежей (I dont know the english version of this word) and lastly Russian has a gender FOR EVERYTHING. Any "It" words still have genders. Honestly, good luck to all trying to learn it

I recently completed the Russian Duolingo tree. It took me 280 days. I tried to get the most out of it by reading the grammar discussion forums on the desktop version, as well as spending a lot of time hand writing the sentences in a notebook to help with retention. I filled an entire notebook during those 280 days. I think it provided me with a solid beginner foundation towards literacy and listening comprehension. Now I am using Lingq to improve my literacy and watching KZfaq teachers for listening practice. :) I hope to be able to do output soon, but it's still all input for now.

Maybe you know this - but the app has a Cyrillic alphabet section now that lets your learn and practice the alphabeth and the pronounciation of the letters depending on stress and soft and hard modifiers. I just started russian on duolingo. I spent the first 14 days just mastering the alphabet. I spent maybe 10mintues a day and now I am very comfortable with reading and to some degree writing in cyrrilic. I agree that it is a foundation that must be taught before trying to learn the language, but Duolingo made it fairly easy and quite fun.

Since this video came out, Duoling has changed some of its Russian courses, adding a section on the alphabet and having it be interactive and repetitive. However, some parts are a little more confusing to understand as it doesn't exactly explain why certain letter groupings would change based on circumstance at first, so when they teach it later on it's similar to relearning and re-training old habits. But it's a lot better than it was, slightly. The guidebook was a good addition, however, it is just conversations/examples, not explanations. I did take some of Duolingo's French courses to supplement the French course I am taking, and I have to say, the French courses' guidebook is a lot more in-depth and has good feedback to those who are just beginning French, or looking to practice. I think Duolingo is defiantly neglecting Russian a little bit in that aspect as well as some explanations on Russian grammar. All around I recommend speaking with someone who speaks Russian fluently and immersing yourself in the language a little through Russian literature and film while using Duolingo. It will definitely help understand how the Russian language is actually used in day-to-day life and literature/media.

On Duo, the discussion sections were pure gold, such great knowledge offered by generous people, links to new resources, consensus on Duo mistakes, and native speakers explaining their language nuances. HOWEVER, Duo has inexplicably shut this down!, all discussions are marked as "discussion closed". It's ridiculous, it must cost them virtually nothing since the support is already developed, the old discussions are there but you can't add new questions or respond to existing ones. I was a dedicated user, 800 day streak, in the diamond league for months, completed the entire spanish course. I'm done with it, besides the numerous Duo mistakes, subjective translations (like the question writer assuming some context that you're not aware of and expecting your answer to match their thoughts), unintelligible audio (you can select a speed for a 2 yar told, or a fluent speaker, nothing in between, no way to ramp up towards fluency), but the discussion shutdown is the nail in the coffin! I'm looking elsewhere, maybe I'll pay for Rosetta. Duo was wonderful for the beginnings of spanish, but was far too frustrating after a while (and that is Dasha's conclusion about Russian). I'm just OCD about finishing things so I suffered through the rest of the Spanish course. Just my 2cents on it.

I had a 450 day streak of Duolingo Russian. I am a farmer, so stopped this summer, since I am so busy. I did it every morning for 450 days, and wrote down all the lessons in notebooks. Still, I had trouble talking to the beekeepers on my farm who speak Russian. I really liked the repetition of Duolingo. I think writing everything down helped me. But, I started feeling like I was just going through the motions, and did not understand the grammar. I look forward to studying Russian again in the winter, when my work load is lessened.

I'm new to Russian on Duolingo. I REALLY benefit from complementing it with Memrise, and I'm planning on doing a vocab sheet and looking for KZfaq channels. Knowing the alphabet doesn't mean I can recall the meaning of what I'm reading, apparently. I can't connect what hear with what I see nor the meaning. My brain needs more help associating in ways Roman alphabet languages don't (or even Japanese, because I've listened to Japanese in context enough to have built associations).

Wait, for real? When I started a few months ago, the very first skills throw you right into the complicated "beginner" words like мужчина etc. In my opinion, those aren't the most beginner-friendly words, let alone being the ones to teach the beginner the alphabet! Kudos to you if you really used only Duolingo for that... I learnt by comparing the Russian words that are the same as in my native or in English (like names, for example.) before I started learning Russian.

I know Russian well, from the standpoint of a Russian learner in California. I might consider Duolingo for Ukrainian, which I have not yet studied.

My opinion is that it is impossible to be fluent in Russian without living there (in Russia) for a while. The above, being valid for any language, is even more so in the case of Russian.

as someone between B1 & B2, I'll just say, duolingo is atrocious if it's your only tool for learning. If you use it with a bunch of other stuff, like a textbook, anki, youtube, and others, it's just barely okay. The Russian course is really lackluster compared to the spanish course. as far as I know, it's created by volunteers, duo put zero money into it, like with other languages. One of the best parts of duo, as others have said, was the discussion area on each question, where you could learn a lot of peculiarities of the language. Duo has shut this down for pretty much no reason and it's way worse now. If you want an alternative to duo, I'd recommend Pimsleur and Rosetta Stone. Both cost money, but they don't have to, if you catch my drift

My favorite book is klacc by klent it is verry useful books. than I also found some short movies like super easy russia and then yours short videa thanks to this it is good. but for me it is not god start learning language throught internet. how I said before there is so many thinks that you do not know were started first and than you gioing to do same mystake as a before. and you´ll not moving next. for me. books- and and some short movie with whoom helped to you with pronounciation or more russia word.

I think Duolingo is the worst for Learning grammar, Ive had a better time learning grammar from KZfaq, and websites. As for vocabulary its really decent. Each lesson add new words, even if its teaching a grammatical concept
