Learn something new about the KA24DE engines! Lets chat about them. In this video we visit @dashbuilt to get schooled on KA24DE stuff. He has been drifting a KA engine for more than 10 years in Lone Star Drift Texas events. He has run a single cam setup, a dual cam setup, NA and turbo. Somehow he keeps together a KA with 600 lb of torque, so he probably knows what he is doing!
In the video he also claims he would do it all over again if he has the chance, no V8 LS1 or 2JZ! That was a bit surprising, and a testament to how much he must really love his setup.
Thanks for chatting with us Spencer!

The Ka24de in the 240 is not a truck motor. It’s a factory stroker 4 bangin monster that haunts sr’s in their nightmares. Just playing. Love those 2. Just because it had the same displacement as a Nissan truck engine. I’ve heard they put vq’s in minivans.

BEARDED G In case you’re still wondering, your engine is the same with the exception that you have a 9.2:1 compression ratio as opposed to the 9.5:1 seen in all 240sx variants. Your engine should have the same potential as I’m about to find out for better or worse by sticking one in a s14 I am about to purchase. Nothing better than financial suicide! A turbo frontier would be a really unique build though.

Here’s something I think Aron would like the idea of, Honda offers a drop in crate civic type r motor at a reasonable price. It’s $6700 for a complete engine with the turbo and $9000 for the complete engine with a wire-ring harness and ecu. For an engine that stock makes 300hp and can easily make 350 with just a tune it might make sense for a simple seat time car instead of adding a turbo to a 10-20 year old k20 /k24

Part of the reason I got rid of my last car was because it was too racecar. I'm going to keep this one a fun Sunday driver, and couldn't agree more that they're fun around that 300hp range. A lot of good info in this video!

4 years since this video was made, but it was still an interesting watch and a lot of what Spencer said is still true today. If anything prices have gotten significantly crazier since then... I wish I could pick his brain and get a blueprint on the perfect 1.5 level motor that he mentions near the end of the video. I currently have an S13 with a stock KA, and I'd like to get the car into the 250-300 HP range, but do I go for that 1.5 level upgrade path, or do I swap to something like a K24? SRs and other traditional swaps have gotten really expensive, and while I could technically afford to put in one of the more traditional swaps, I'm not sure if I want to sink that much money into this car which means my choices are limited. I'm nearly done with the bodywork so I won't be able to keep putting the decision off forever unless I wanna stay stock.

The half weighted crank does play a role but I believe it’s because of the intake manifold design
@sdshakazulu4268

I’ve tossed around the idea of taking the bottom half of the manifold off and putting a universal plenum straight on the upper section while shaping the left over runners into velocity stacks. Put an oversized tb on as well. Point is the stock manifold is for midrange. Loosing the bottom manifold will shorten the runners by like 4inches or so, moving the powerband higher. But I’m by no means an engineer.

Quite informative. KAs don't get much love, but it's amazing how some people and smaller companies are doing aftermarket parts for these engines. Something that should've been mentioned is the durability and stresses the factory parts can handle before they fail. It's been suggested in Facebook pages that the stock rods can handle plenty of power before failing (stock pistons would fail first). How much RPM the stock crankshaft can handle before secondary harmonics start to become a problem. I was surprised the stock oiling system is that good, with no need of an SR style aftermarket oil pan. No mention of windage trays or oil scrapers, though. I want to make a KA-DET with the Tomei turbo kit. I'd love to get my hands on a Nissan Motorsports side draft intake manifold for turbo ITB setup, but it's most likely discontinued and a rare part to find. Since it will be for a street car, it will see an occasional drag/circuit run or two. Would love to get more into this platform in order to make safe reliable power without going overboard, using OEM and aftermarket parts. If anyone can suggest me where to get the help for that, it would be much appreciated. Thanks for proving that the KA isn't "just a truck engine". Its lineage can be traced back to the L engines, and that particular engine architecture was inspired by a Mercedes-Benz inline engine. So we can say the KA has some pedigree in it's design.

Ive been running dual cam KAs since 2008-9ish. Only had oem headgasket failure and one spun rod bearing. I had a single cam- my first 240 ever, back in 2006, the timing chain guide was so worn that the chain wore a whole in the water pump, and flooded the oil pan with coolant and locked the motor up. Didnt know what had happened, 16 year old at that time. But yea, Idk what power I have but its plenty to drift and super reliable. Dual Cam with light weight pullys, light weight fly wheel. I only run one belt, No power steering. Used turbo off a duramax? lol ebay manifold and fmi. oem everything, i use a FMU and with oem fuel regulator. No Tune. Maybe some day I can afford some kind of tune, and dyno. Im at 7 psi of boost. In order to run more, need a tune, injectors, pump.

Why do we have MAF in the first place when a MAP does the same thing but doesn't break or burn out? Seriously I want to start a conversation about this
@cesarconh895
@cesarconh895 5 жыл бұрын
manny s if you are running a turbo setup, you really want a MAF. Although some cars have both MAF is always better tho
@griplimit
@griplimit 5 жыл бұрын
The reason is MAF's(hot wire) correlate more variables with atmospheric conditions then MAP sensors do, like altitude, barometric pressure, and temperature. A big problem with MAP is say you tune your engine a 500 feet above sea level and you take your car up a mountain or any other place at a different atmospheric pressure the tune will be off.
@Methodwake
@Methodwake 5 жыл бұрын
While speed density is simple it is still a calculated value for volume using of pv=nrt vs MAF which gets this directly. Barometric correction is not much of an issue and many oem's take care of this with either an additional pressure sensor or taking a reading koeo

Na ka sub 200hp is doable and sound great if you dont have an annoying exhaust. I love them, but more for spirited driving. My favorite honda build was a nonvtec LS that put down 176whp. We had it in an 89 4 door civic. Full suspension with azenis at 65psi. That car was scarey fun.

As much as a turbo build would be cool, i just got done with my Dual sidedrafts on my Single cam and i love it, tuning is another subject but the sound and simplicity of it is amazing.. Been driving this truck for 15 years and as many problems ive had with mafs, ecus, and harness issues, I think having a 2 wire ignition and some beautiful webers on the side is well worth it

@@LoneStarDrift So I know a few yrs ago Tomei started to produce and release KA turbo parts like they have been for SR motors. Considering I learned fullrace makes a turbo mani for the KA as pointed out in this video and its highly recommended I was thinking in that moment how the Tomei compares in price, performance and how well designed overall it is to the full race.

Several years back there was a company making a supercharger kit for the ka that used a S/c off of the nissan pathfinder. Any opinions on that? Its not very common but for a person like me who enjoys the feel of linear torque from the na stand point, the S/c kit would be the way to go IF it is/was obtainable.
@LoneStarDrift
@LoneStarDrift 5 жыл бұрын
That option isn’t that great and is kinda pointless due to a variety of reasons, such as super charger size, cooling the air, brackets, etc. easier to just turbo the car with available quality aftermarket parts. Unless you are just really into that or something, avoid that idea.

KA gang!!! I myself have blew up a few KA’s after turbo’ing them, but that was due to lack of proper ECU management (Stock ECU w/ SAFC. T25 turbo, stock internals). I was actually debating on swapping over to SR but decided to stick with the KA, but with proper management this time. I’ve went with Nismotronic, and currently in the process of putting in another KA. This time it’s a freshly built motor with forged rods & pistons and BC valvetrain with ZERO miles on it. A friend was building it to throw in his s14 but he found an SR for a good deal before he could even run the car so he sold it to me for cheap. Subscribe to my channel for updates!!! Very good informational video though guys, respect!

My KA swap 510 is due for a rebuild! ...Might just go NA stage 2 with the option for a smaller turbo in future... no low comp pistons. The current KA is still strong but the noisy valves and stock injectors aren't playing well with my 300ZX fuel pump anymore!

Thanks for the very informative and great video! I'm really interested in his choice on keeping the OEM intake manifold. He mentioned there are no options that have been proven to make the same power curve as the OEM, especially in the low end range. I've always considered the Xcessive Engineering manifold to be a great option; but I'm really surprised to hear it really is not an improvement? Would love to hear more of yours or Spencer's opinion on this!

It's pretty simple that the stock runner length is much longer and will make better mid and low range. Plus, you couldn't pay me to put another xcessive part on my car. If I ever end up over 600, I'll probably make something.
