But they are better known as capitals because them being called county “town” and not being as large as a city so they better be of as capitals

Can any body tell me please Bedfordshire comes under which district or city? I don't understand the mean of borough, country town. Cathedral town,.

@@JourneyWithCharnjeet A borough just basically means a town. County town is just another way of saying a counties capital. A cathedral town means that the town has a cathedral within its boundaries. Bedfordshire is a county.

Our counties don't have capitals as such, but county towns, which are the administrative centres. Also, we don't really learn these so I see why everyone in the comments is like, what? I was like that with East Sussex, I thought it should be Brighton, looked it up and it is Lewes!

Most US states also have counties, but their capital cities are called "county seats".

I thought Matlock was the county town of Derbyshire, it used to be Derby but that is now a unitary authority, separate from the county council. Same for Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire they both became unitary authorities, and the county councils are located just outside of the cities in West Bridgford and Glenfield, but I guess as they have a post town of Nottingham and Leicester

I understand the confusion. Before Yorkshire was divided into four counties: North, South, East and West in 1974 the capital of Yorkshire was York. York however is located in North Yorkshire but the official county capital is Northallerton. I was confused as well when I read it. I hoped I helped you out with this answer. Lancaster is the county town, Preston is the administrative centre. I suppose that makes it more of a capital.

The county towns have names from the principal cities and sound right like Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, Staffordshire, Worcestershire, Herefordshire, Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Oxfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Gloucestershire, Buckinghamshire. But Durhamshire does not sound right, Chestershire is Cheshire, Lancastershire is Lancashire, Wiltonshire is Wiltshire, Dorchestershire is Dorset. Imagine Norfolk as Norwichshire, Suffolk as Ipswichshire, Essex as Colchestershire, Kent as Canterburyshire, Sussex as Brightonshire, Devon as Exetershire, Cornwall as Truroshire, Cumbria as Carlisleshire, Northumberland as Newcastleshire, Surrey as Guildfordshire. Northamptonshire sounds right but not Southamptonshire for Hampshire, and Shrewsburyshire for Shropshire. Buckingham is only a small town for Buckinghamshire, what about Berkshire as Readingshire, no place called Berkeley there. Wiltshire must get its name from Wilton, but Salisbury is the biggest place (Salisburyshire), as in Somerset I can think of Somerton, but imagine Bathshire.

They used to in Richmond upon Thames but in 1965 this part of Surrey was absorbed into the new Greater London however their county council is still there

But it is the same for North Yorkshire, you might think it should be York. And for East Yorkshire, Hull is bigger than Beverley, So it's not always the biggest or most important city...at least not in Yorkshire!

@@andyt8216 before 1974, the three historic Ridings of Yorkshire had their own county councils, they were located in Wakefield, Beverley and Northallerton, because that was the centre of the area it served, so they kept those towns for ease, when the historic county of Yorkshire and it's Ridings were abolished

Would've been nicer to've used the historic counties. They're still in place for cultural and heritage purposes, and make a lot more sense than the ceremonial counties.

Yeah you are right, when all of Yorkshire used to be a county, York was the capital. But since it has been divided York is no capital anymore

York is now a unitary authority, which means it is not under the authority of North Yorkshire county council, so it wouldn't make much sense for their admin to be based there :P However, other unitary authorities, for example Nottingham, are still considered the "county town", although the county council is based across the river in West Bridgford, so surely that is more accurately the "capital" of Nottinghamshire now? It's confusing.

South Gloucestershire is not a ceremonial county, but a unitary authority created in 1996, after Avon county was abolished, which is separate from Gloucestershire for council purposes, but part of Gloucestershire for ceremonial purposes

These are NOT the true/traditional counties of England, these are meaningless ceremonial council areas. The counties have 'county towns', they do not have capitals.

@Deesar Thafaks they officially recognised by the British government as ‘counties’. These boundaries in the video are for administrative purposes, they are just poorly named as they are not what counties are, but most of them are named after traditional counties, which creates confusion.

@Deesar Thafaks they clearly do exist as the borders are clearly marked in real life all over the country. In cricket Surrey play in London, Warwickshire play in Birmingham, Glamorgan play in Cardiff, Lancashire play in Manchester, Gloucestershire play in Bristol etc etc.
