I am the mother of and caregiver to my adult, special-needs son, so traveling just doesn’t happen for me. I really appreciate everything RootsTech had on demand, and all of Family Search’s efforts to digitize as much as possible. If it weren’t for computers and the Internet, I would not be able to do very much genealogy research. I’m so grateful for all of the online repositories!

It is amazing how much is available to us now! I started genealogy in the early 90s -- I wouldn't want to go back!

Same! I stopped at the booth and talked to Mags and Greg for a bit. Must have been the one time you weren’t there!

The tech team at RootsTech was really on the ball this year. As a remote participant, I found it exceptionally easy to log in and set up my watch list and then to watch the sessions that I was interested in (and when I changed my mind, it was very easy to find another). The only tech problem that I saw happened when a remote presenter's power went out. I learned new things at the conference and I'm looking forward to attending again next year, hopefully in person next time.

The in-person tech teams did a great job, too! Essentially, RootsTech put on two conferences at the same time!

I live in New Zealand and logged in online to look at various presentations - was excited to see one available from you! Loved your presentation and it was so useful - I am guilty of often NOT milking a record for all it's worth!! Thank you Amy :)

Great recap of RootsTech. I watched some of the sessions virtually from here in the UK, I even watched your sessions which was super cool. I think Crista Cowan mentioned a few more things Ancestry were launching, I think there was something to do with Communities (I need to look more into that, I don't think it's live yet), maybe viewing your matches that have the Community in common. There were a few other things, but I forget what they were. I think it may have been in the Q&A part at the end of the session with her, Diahan, and someone else whose name escapes me. Having read a few comments is a change that Ancestry doesn't have the same level of tools as MyHeritage (or even just a few of them) as if they did they would blow their competitors away, having the largest database of DNA testers. Their concentration on Ethnicity to do the product I find annoying.

+1 to Carol's suggestion for you to review RootsMagic 9. I'm on the fence about getting a PC-based family tree program (I'm exclusively on Ancestry & FamilySearch), and would like to hear a real-world experience. Thanks!

I've been using FTM since 1999. It's the only way to go. There is no way I would only used and online family tree. You always have access to your data and a place to type notes. Not everything is on line. I have transcribed notes from research pre-internet days that are not available except in courthouses and archives. FTM can be synced to Ancestry.

I usually have 3-4 different Ancestry tabs open on my desktop at one time. I find the app difficult to use.

I usually have a ridiculous number of tabs open! lol

Ancestry said that they’re going to make “storied” available on desktop this year for us and that it just wasn’t ready to launch yet.😊

For the CM Explainer ... What is considered too big of an age range between matches for feasibility? I am anywhere from 10-15 years younger than all my siblings. All my 1st cousins are all in the age range of my siblings or older. I became an aunt at 2 yrs old. All my 1st cousins once removed would be in my age range. Would the CM Explainer rule them out as being "unlikely"?

I don't like the Ancestry app (and I often use apps). It's no substitute.
@AmyJohnsonCrow Жыл бұрын
I agree. The app is good for a quick lookup. ("What was great-grandma's birthday?") But I can't do any real research on it.
