Carv - Digital Ski Coach

Жыл бұрын

During his 15-year career at the top of ski racing, Ted Ligety developed one of the most exciting carving turns in skiing. He won 2 Olympic Golds and 5 World Championships, and now he has partnered with Carv to share the secrets of the perfect carving turn.
"I’ve spent my whole career pushing the limits of what’s possible on skis. I have put that experience into a program that most skiers can follow.
Our goal was to develop a real-time coaching experience that helps a wide range of skiers make the kind of turns they could only dream of." - Ted Ligety
This partnership combines the accuracy of Carv's real-time, objective feedback with Ted's phenomenal expertise - creating a coaching program that is the first of its kind.
With Ted’s training, Carv members will unlock the feeling of the perfect carve.
Download in app today - free to Carv members.
Want to learn how to really arc a turn, and get your hip to the snow?
In Train with an Olympian, you’ll progress through 40 increasingly challenging levels - with real time tips, videos, and drills developed by Ted. Think you've got what it takes to challenge Ted?
Carv members will learn how to:
• Manage their inside ski to create a tighter radius in their turn
• Develop edge similarity, the foundation of a great carve
• Improve outside ski pressure to manage the forces created in the arc
• Start to edge earlier in the turn
• Ramp up those edge angles, and get your hip to the floor
When we started Carv, we set out on a mission to make world class ski coaching accessible to every skier. Our partnership with Ted has been a long time in the making, and is a major milestone towards that goal.

Carv has influenced my skiing in the same manner that Strava has influenced my cycling. Objective data is a game changer! I really enjoy the feedback and my skiing (and fun-factor) has improved immensely! I try to execute the many clear practice drills and goals on different runs while I’m skiing solo or with friends. Carv will not replace the ski instructor- but it will certainly enhance the lessons! Also a Huge fan of Ted Ligety!

Most of our development occurs on the software side as we work with new coaches and develop new training models every year - a membership means that we can keep pushing the coaching forward and keep our members improving year after year, rather than a one-off impact.

@@CarvSki yeah sorry, I appreciate you responding but no. You could sit down with some pros during one process to make a progression program (or a couple). I’d bet if you didn’t keep paying a revolving door of influencers to make new “programs” you could cut your costs and sell as a single price. Then you’d get my money. I’m not going to put something in my boot I have to pay bills on.

You'll still get your Ski:IQ score on every run and run tracking stats (speed, altitude). But you lose access to real time coaching modes and detailed performance analysis until you resubscribe. An alternative option might be to step down to a daily pass for less frequent use if you need.

What is edge similarity 91%? Does it mean that the edge angle of the inside and outside skis differ by 100-91=9%? If so, then how come edge similarity starts with 2% ? And what is early edging 97% ? This is a ratio of what to what?
@CarvSki
@CarvSki Жыл бұрын
Hi, edge similarity measures the rate of change of roll of both skis. i.e. are you tipping them both at the same rate. A low score here will result in an A-frame (inside ski has lower edging than ouside ski) Early edging is measuring how early in the turn window are you able to create your maximum edge angle. Carv will measure these for you on every run so you can get objective data to improve with.

@@CarvSki Thank you. You explained that "qualitatively" - in general terms. Yet I would like to understand this quantitatively. Percent arises when one value is divided by another. Which parameters are measured and then divided by this device. To know this will help to understand what exactly I am doing wrong and how to correct it

Two things: 1. Inside leg shortening 2. Tall in the turn, short in transition. The modern high load race carving technique means that your DH leg, which carries 75-90% of the load, is relatively unbent. It HAS to be to handle these immense loads. How much can you squat if you only go down 12", instead of all the way down, ass to the floor. Look at the slo-mo video of Ted racing GS. His DH leg is only mildly bent. So what happens when you transition? If you keep your leg relatively unbent, you will get way too tall in transition, and the up momentum will kill your next turn entry. So you actually have to BEND you lower leg MORE when you transition your DH to being your new inside ski. These two factors, inside leg shortening and the relatively straight DH leg GO TOGETHER. When you let the turn go and fall into the fall line to start your new turn, you will bend your old DH to enable you to transition while minimizing he rise in your center of mass. So you bend your old DH leg and let your skis come under you. As you do this you have to keep pressure on the tip of the ski (balls of your feet) and also make sure your inside ski is leading the initiation of the turn. As yo do this KEEP THAT OLD DH LEG, NOW YOUR INSIDE LEG, SHORT. That short inside leg with the new DH leg long puts your ski edges on a higher angle. It is all about the transition. Long becomes short, and short becomes long. Master the tactile feel of these legs switching their kinematics/angles, and you will start to develop higher angles. Remember with high angles (GS, SG and DH turns), the only way you can resist the massive loads is by learning to stand on the DH ski with your leg less bent. Less bent is strong. Ski coached call this "getting stacked"

Ted’s ski IQ is regularly in the 160s. However skiing in a more mellow way or on choppy terrain can give scores in 150s even for the best among us
@shooter7a

Carve will not magically transform your skiing if you do not know how to interpret the data, and then determine what drills to do to correct your flawed kinematics. I do not believe that most skiers have the self coaching ability to put the data that carve provides into practice. Finally, Carv will not speed up your nervous system re-programming one bit. If it is going to take 30 hours of doing Garlands to develop foot feel, and you do not do the 30 hours, looking at Carv data all day long will not help you one bit.
