Every musical key consists of seven notes. The key of E major consists of these seven notes: E F# G# A B C# D# The chords in the key of E major are as follows: E major chord consists of the notes, E - G# - B F# minor chord consists of the notes, F# - A - C# G# minor chord contains the notes, G# - B - D# A major chord contains the notes, A - C# - E B major chord contains the notes, B - D# - F# C# minor chord consists of the notes, C# - E - G# D# diminished chord consists of the notes, D# - F# - A What do you notice? Every single Chord in the Key of E major is made of some combination of three notes from the key. What the lesson is trying to teach you is when the rhythm guitarist is playing one of those chords, the player soloing should play the notes of that chord. So if the rhythm guitar player is playing the E major chord, the soloist should focus on the notes E, G# and B. When the rhythm player then changes chords to the A major chord, the soloist should focus on the notes A, C#, E. Let's take it one step further - The solo player can add spice by adding other notes from the key but they should still focus on the chord notes. So if the rhythm guitarist is playing the E major chord, the soloist should continue to focus on the notes that make up the E major chord (E, G#, B) but the soloist can also add in the other notes from the key ( F# A C# D# ). The trick is to focus on the notes that make up the E major chord, and throw in other notes from the key sporadically. If the rhythm guitarist then started playing the A major chord, focus on the notes that make it up (A - C# - E) but keep in mind you can add the other notes from the key as well (F# G# B D#) to add more flavor. If you can dedicate the time to memorize all of the notes in the popular keys, what notes make up each chord in those keys, and where those notes are on the fretboard, you'll be better off than 99% of guitarists who all just think in shapes and hit a lifelong plateau. (Which happened to me for a long time)

What Guthrie says about learning the chords and scales around them is so true, and better than any lesson. My playing vastly improved after getting into the CAGED thing and being able to see everything in any position. Those triads he showed at the end proves it. LOL I've still got a lot to learn.

I love Guthrie’s playing and teaching style. He is so right about visualizing the fretboard in chord shapes. It takes effort and time but it’s totally changed my ability to play the guitar. Thank you for having Guthrie on and I hope to see him again.

Fender and Gibson always sound perfect together no matter the position!

This way of thinking is beginning to have a tremendous effect on how I view playing. I've been trapped in pentatonics for years, and devised an exercise that I thought would help me, where I would stay in the same spot, but play the corresponding pentatonic scale for each chord, like 4th position for first chord, stay in the same place and play 3rd position (or whatever position it would be) for the next chord, not realizing all I am doing is trying to force a key change over a chord change. I could hear it wasn't right, and man, was I way off. So thankful for these resources.

This is a good video to watch in case you think you’re getting pretty decent on guitar...makes you realize you’re still a rank beginner. Guitar is one of those things where the more you learn, the more you realize how much there is to learn. Maybe that’s why it’s so addictive. Seriously though, imagine how many hours this guy has played to be able to visualize the way he does and make it look that easy.

i want to thank you so much for these lessons. ive been playing the guitar for many years and consider myself a rather advanced player who found some of these things out but got stuck pretty badly at one point. noone could really answer me the question: "how do you play solos?". i was learning the shapes with blind eyes, mechanically, not visualizing the applications, and hated it... now I found your videos which fit my playing level perfectly.. I want to thank you, Papa, for your great didactical talent to break the fretboard down to shapes and - above all - present the applications of them! and i want to thank you, Guthrie, for your immensely melodic playing. you've just become one of my favorite players since you mix blues pentatonic and jazzy scales with major 7ths and 2nds I love so much - and you dont get "overjazzed" and abstract. I was looking for soloing like this for a long time and the fact that you simply explain this stuff in such and easy way is a huge gift for me. enough talking, going to grab the guitar!

Fantastic lesson! I've been "playing" guitar for almost 30 years now and I discovered this exact concept about 5 years ago. My playing has improved more in the last 5 years than in the 25 before. I can't stress enough how right Guthrie is about this. Learn the CAGED chords all the way up the neck, know the major scale in each of those positions and be able to arpeggiate the chords. Boom!

Had to watch this again. What make him so good is his dynamics. This is something I don't ever see talked about really. He perfectly chooses which notes to play loudly and which to play softly. Also, when to speed it up to get up on the beat and then when to lay back. A person could have the tabs to these solos but it would take a lot of years to develop those dynamics as good as Guthrie.

I had a lesson with Guthrie last week, and it totally changed how I approach looking at the guitar. I have to be honest, my head hurt for 2 days after it, just trying to absorb/digest everything. But now that I've recovered, what he teaches is the best way I've ever encountered for a way to looking at, and playing. Best part is the lesson was recorded, so now I can go back and revisit the exercises, tips, knowledge, and my own awful playing anytime I like. Bottom line -- GT is as good as it gets, and money well spent on my part. And yes, this video's chord progression was used! :)

Love this chord progression its one that really calls to my musical sense and I had probably heard it thousands of times in different iterations/keys through my 30 + years of playing but had never learned it before today, and who in the hell are the 14 people that voted thumbs down on this? Really?...especially since it's top-level free instruction???

Gotta be honest Papa, having been circulating through youtube videos for months now looking to find the push to the next stage of development I know I have in me but have yet to get to, the stuff you've done with Guthrie has been the most insightful anywhere. I was starting and stopping learning new songs cause it was just more repetition of stuff where I'm doing it rote and running into the same blocks when I start trying to tinker with it liek any musician has to when they play a cover unless you wanna sound like everyone else. Same pentatonic ideas, same recycled poor man's Hendrix stuff but without the harmonic understanding to apply it as well as the man did himself. Just after watching these videos a number of times and going and fiddling with the concepts has produced the most satisfying playing I've done this year. Its pushing the fog away and its very exciting. In general your collab videos with great artists have been excellent. Hope you can get Guthrie in again.

4:30 Guthrie is linking the Chord as the foundation, the Pentatonic as the framing, then the full (major) Scale as the drywall. So 1) learn the same Chord in the five different CAGED shapes up and down the fretboard, 2) learn the pentatonic box shape for that CAGED chord shape up and down the fretboard. then mentally move from the chord to the pentatonic box playing a melody without shifting your hand. Stay in the same position, just play the chord, then the pentatonic box, then the chord again. 3) learn the full (major or minor) scale for each CAGED chord in that position. 4) Then the mental shift happens when you play the chord on beat one, next play the pentatonic box, then play the full scale, then finish with the chord, in the same fret position. 5) finally, shift to the same chord in a different position with the next CAGED shape and repeat the pentatonic box and full scale melodic playing.

P.S. I hear what you guys are saying (on this, and other vids), but i needed this stuff when I was 16, or 26, not 56, LOL!!! The cold hard reality is that my brain just doesn't absorb and apply much of this stuff, at anywhere near the same level it (kinda) did when i was younger. The expression that comes to mind is, "you can't teach an old dog new tricks" (or, "you can't put lipstick on a pig", LOL!!) I still pick up little bits and pieces here and there, but in my case, we'd basically be talking about re-inventing the wheel, and that simply ain't happening. But still dig these videos, I'll keep watching, even though I'm running way behind , gasping for breath, yelling, "Hey guys, wait up!!!!" :D

I heard Guthrie Trapp playing on a Shawn Camp at the Station Inn on KZfaq 5 years ago or so and was blown away. Not that Shawn Camp isn't a great guitar player but Guthrie Trapp was not trying to step on Shawn Camp but as soon as I heard him I was blown away.

This is helpful, Guthrie should continue to explain how he does his phrasing, how he connects from one chord to the next and also provide advice. I know the chord tones, can see them but sometimes get stuck.
