Learn to Paint Light Watercolor Demo and Lesson on painting white houses

Hello Art-family,
Things have been crazy right now. I moved my family from Virginia to Pittsburgh and that's all been going well. I wanted to do a video on sketching light and making the transition I get a lot of workshop questions about in taking the transition from putting down the local colors to actually observing the light that you see. I hope you find something helpful in the video! Thank you new subscribers and everyone who bought a copy of my Fraggle Rock book that just came out. I appreciate the support and it's been a joy getting to know all of you over the past few months.

Your commentary is great instruction. Very helpful. And loved the house/tree light sources diagrams at the beginning - your layering is probably the best demo of this subject that I’ve seen, very clear.

Totally agree about the use of gouache. I think so much of it comes from watercolor teachers who want us to learn to use the white of the paper etc. and then people think they can’t. The sky is going to fall. But unless you’re in a plein air paint out or a juried show that requires a single medium then I say if it makes it look better, go for it!

Good description of light theory. Carson's book on landscape painting also goes into it in depth. John F Carlson was an oil painter but the theory still applies to us watercolor peeps. Every watercolor painter should see this vid. Thanks J.

Haven't read it! I will have to track it down. I'm always looking for new books and new perspectives! I learned most of what I know from James Gurney's book on Color and Light.

Great painting, great video, and great info! Now, I'm going to be staring at white houses and fences to see if I can detect the reflected colors. Such a great observation and one you don't hear about, often. Great point about Homer and Sargent using gouache, too. I used to have a hang-up over it when I first started painting. Once it started saving some illustrations I would have had to completely start over, my mind changed pretty quickly. 😂

Brian Ashmore Studio oh yea. I thought i had to be careful about it when I started but I learned most of what I know from James Gurney so I was lucky to start out learning from someone who is very multi-media friendly. Have you seen the David Bellamy videos? They’re super fun. He’ll use anything to make a picture also. Haha

I guess it only makes sense, with all the people moving to VA from PA we should send a few up! You should've stopped in L'burg, we could use more watercolor instructors!! Thanks for the wisdom :)

Deborah Navarro hahaha it’s true. Lots of people sick of the hills and winter. I love it up here though. :) I loved VA too. It’s a beautiful place. There’s a weird connection I’m noticing. Every person I meet is from Virginia and every other person I met in VA was from here hahaha

I'm going to go find every single white house near my house and go paint them HAHAH 8D The lecture at the beginning was super helpful and i think it summarizes a lot of things but applying it in real life is tricky. But THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARINGGG!! The topic kind of reminded me of James Gurney's Colour and Light which i hoarded the only copy from the school library and i keep renewing it HAHAH. ( i bet people hate me for doing that but oh wells )

ugotjams? Hah! Oh yea- I know it’s a lot. I just want to share all the things that took me years to discover. Take it 1 thing at a time. Look for warm down facing planes and blue light in the shadows first. It’s all a ton, I know and I’m terrible at concision. Hah! I took my copy of that book to a James Gurney workshop to get it signed. I even got to meet him and his wife and get a coffee with them but I was too embarrassed because I’d read it so much it was falling apart and had sticky notes all over it haha so I bought a copy of his other book and got that signed :) it was totally worth the trek up north. I learned 90% of what I know about art from him. Maybe more. He’s a hero for sure.

THATS SO COOL!! gosh maybe i should just get my own copy and start making notes over it too, usually i copy the things into my sketchbook and try to apply it. :D and yessir i'll take 1 thing at a time!

Love your videos Jared! drawing and painting houses is one of my favorite things to do, and it never occurred to me that I could do it for a purpose other than my own enjoyment. How did you pitch it to a real estate person?

jalopy2222 thank you for watching! Well if you have a couple done already you can put them together in a little packet and just email it and the concept to some local agencies through google. Give them a price. More often than not I do it for the real estate agent as a unique gift for the new home Buyer. You could mention it that way. Or home owners that a couple agents that know me will mention- “I have this friend that blah blah” and they contact me. I actually did a sketch of the house WE made an offer on to sweeten the deal since there were a ton of offers on it and we got the house haha ;)

Hi, I am a new subscriber and I just had to tell you that this video was incredible helpful!!! I had never heard anyone describe the light the way that you just did and actually helped me to understand it a lot better. Thank you! The painting turned out beautifully! ladyshadow79 thank you so much. that’s super important to me because I did not have an eye or talent for seeing light or painting. It took a lot to learn to see and develop it and if I can help anyone shave a couple years off of digging in the mud I hope to do just that. These are Escoda travel brushes. They’re the best in the world in my opinion. Davinci makes some too. Stateside we have Plaza Art that sells some and dickblick sells the “versitil” model. The rest up can get from Jackson’s Art in the UK (I think they’re on sale right now) for everyday use I recommend Perla, Versatil or Prado. The ultimos are incredible but hold a ton of water. They also make fine sable versions that are expensive but GORGEOUS! Good luck! Feel free to contact me if you have trouble finding some and I can help you.

Jared Loves to Draw Thank you so much! I will check around and see if I can find the brush. As many brushes as I do have, none of them are travel brushes. Right now my favorite are the Raphael Soft Aqua brushes, along with my Isabey of course. But I instantly fell in love with the big metal one you were using on that beautiful house. I am going for a walk in the morning to see if I can find a white house in our neighborhood so that I may practice working in lights and shadows. Thank you again. Your new North Carolina Fan, Stacy

ladyshadow79 thanks so much. Yea- check them out! Their collapsable and beautiful. Jackson’s even has little wallets you can get with them haha cheap joes down there usually carries the versatil but it may be cheaper online. :) good luck!!

At that time I was using pretty much all escoda synthetics. Perla, Prado and ultimo.

i love all your videos, i feel like i learn so much from them. i have to ask though, what is the music you use in the background of this video? the bassline sounds just like Tool even though i know it's not haha. thanks!

Jennifer Kosanke hi! Thank you :) I don’t honestly remember what the song is.. it came from a free music library so it definitely isn’t tool, although I love them ;)

Thanks a lot for making this video, Jared, it was super helpful! I especially love your many little tips (e.g. use warm colors on the window) and also the use of white gouache :) One thing I‘m curious about: how did the inhabitants react when they saw you were painting their house?

Somnia thank you! I learned that from Master James Fletcher Watson. He was a Norwich school tradition painter in the UK and is a hero of mine. Check him out! He has tutorial videos through APV but he passed recently. This is my parents house haha because I was filming I felt weird. Normally people think I’m just a surveyer and don’t bother me. If people see I’m sketching their place they’re usually happy and charmed. I wouldn’t post up in their drive way though haha

Hi, loved the video! I'm a complete beginner with watercolor and gouache (or really painting in general) and I'm trying to get better at plein air sketching. Thanks for the helpful tips - I'm going to go find a white house later today. Just a question - how long did this take you?

Mali thanks for watching! This one took like and hour or so. Don’t worry about how long it takes to make a sketch. My best advice would be to focus on drafting. Painting is drawing and your skill will improve faster if you increase that. It’s helpful to start with ink drawing at first. Microns and waterproof so you could color if you want with watercolor. Thanks for the video, it was very interesting... but I found the music a bit intrusive and found it hard to concentrate on what you were saying, just thought I would mention it, since it is obvious you put a lot of work into the production of the video, it seems a shame to spoil it...backgound music should be just that (in the background and not vying for centre stage) but the tutorial was full of helpful advice and tips so thank you for that... Cheers !!!

56janjan thank you! I appreciate the feedback and will definitely keep it in mind. Usually I use ambient music but I was thinking I might be putting people to sleep haha so this time I tried something more up tempo with the volume low. Sorry about that. That’s annoying haha and I hate when I see that in a video. I completely agree with you.
