Small note: I think when assimilating a dog by an exposed alien, the number of dogs does not count, because dogs do not have strength. So even when the exposed alien moves into the kennel with only one strength token, and there are three dogs, the alien can still catch and assimilate one dog and gain one strength token. Great (and probably best) tutorial by the way!

1. Does being on green space affect suspicion checks in encounters in 1-3 player games? Not clear from rulebooks. 2. What happens if thing gets placed in room with 2 characters and one has a Molotov? FAQ says there is no encounter so thing runs away and characters continue doing their actions. Some rulebooks say “lay down the character with Molotov, they lose their action, thing runs away. What happens to the second character in the room that has no Molotov? Does it also lay down with no action? 3. We completely ignored food in 2 player game as the penalty (only 2 item cards allowed) was not that bad. Was this correct? Or, were we supposed to use only 2 action dice when taking actions after food was depleted?

I watched this twice, played 3 rounds then watched it again. This was a big help. Still confused/ unclear about using a weapon against an alien and eventually killing it. What happens if I pull a weapon on an alien but it is a 2 and there is another player in the room?

Hello !! little question, when a human uses a shotgun or a revolver to repel the reveal alien, does the human figure have to lie down afterwards, preventing him from playing again afterwards?

Awesome explanation, thank you for that! One question though: Do we ever remove alien strength from the game for good (e.g. with flamethrower or molotov) so the alien will have less strength in the pool for the next round? Or even eliminate it totally this way?

For solo and 1-3 players, when an escape attempt is made, the alien has a last ditch effort to thwart the escape, and rolls dice equal to its "strength". Is the strength (and number of dice rolls) equal to the total number of alien points in play, or equal to the max number of players in a room +1? Thanks!

At 31:15, a character in Green still needs to pull a token in a Contagion check right? But does not need to give out any. Also: Anyone lying down does NOT do a contagioncheck i thought?

Played with 5 players the other night and I guess my only question is what happens if an alien is the least suspected player? Can the alien choose to escape on the rescue helicopter?

Great video, but have a question. If you have an encounter with a 2 strength Exposed Alien and use a flamethrower to remove one strength and have the Alien run away, what happens to the remaining strength token?

Thank you for taking the trouble to explain the mechanics of “The Thing.” I have the game & my home currently has 9 people staying here, at least 7 (possibly 8) of whom would definitely be up for playing the game. The trouble is that - without being already familiar with the game myself, & based on your exhaustive explanation of it - it actually seems far more complicated than I realised & I am doubtful that many of these potential players (even though they greatly enjoy many contemporary boardgames) would adequately grasp the rules, even if they had the patience to sit through such a lengthy explanation… 🤔😟 (the latter concern being a frequent source of frustration, when trying to introduce new games to the table). I think I’ll have to set up & explore the game myself & see if I can pick up enough of the gameplay to be able to explain the rules succinctly enough to the other players, that they won’t be put off playing it altogether - even though several of them (myself included) are huge fans of the John Carpenter Movie. When placing an Alien Strength token to a location with nobody there, does it remain on the board?

1 question... maybe you covered this and I missed it. If I'm in the kennel with 1 alien strength, and 4 dogs, I can assimilate a dog. But if I'm in another room with 1 alien strength and 1 dog I can't because I don't have enough strength? Do Dogs add strength to a room?

I based the strength of the alien figures on their order of appearance in the 1982 movie. The dog alien was first, then the alien with Copper's head on the stalk (after his arms were chewed off), the Norris spider-head and finally the big daddy mashup alien.

How do you determine who the leader is?

When the rescue helicopter arrives, the least suspicious player gets the option of getting on first. Does this mean that when it arrives, if the least suspicious player is an alien, it is an automatic win for them no matter what? (Edited for spelling errors)

I am torn… I recently bought The Thing Infection at Outpost 31 because I found it for a great deal. I wanted to try Outpost 31 since I heard great reviews and there are variants on BGG for less than 4 players. Now, here’s this game, which is playable for less than 4 players. I dont think I really need 2 The Thing games, but I cannot decide which one to keep on my shelf.

When an Alien Strength token runs away, does it go back to the Exposed Alien Players' pool or is it removed from the game?

Oh man, I was *so* close to buying this for my group of 3, until I've seen the 1-3-variant which just seems like a mess. :( I'm actually tempted to add a fourth "player" which would be played by me, though I don't know how to solve the "One of your characters is the thing"-problem.

Does this have any connection to the original board game? Is it made by the same people or is this an updated version? I really enjoy the original, but I’m not sure if it’s worth it to bother learning a new version of the game unless it’s better. This version seems more complicated.

could anyone help me understand two rules please? 1.When asimilated by alien strenght tokens (alien vs character encounter) in a location, the player dies but is still on team of humans and if humans wins, he wins too. Why? Why isn't he on team Alien from now on like in all other cases of asimilation/infection? 2. Multiple times I've already heard/read "if the alien still has any strenght tokens left" or "if the first revealed alien was destroyed". Does that mean, that it is possible to kill a revealed alien? If so, how? Like for exmaple, when you use a weapon in location with alien token, you don't completey discard the alien token from the game, right? It only gets discarded from the location and it goes back to the total pool of alien strenght for next round. So how can you kill the revealed alien or lower its strenght tokens permanently? Thank you!

26:46 would the alien in this example actually NOT be able to assimilate a dog because its strength is NOT GREATER THAN the number of dogs there? Nevermind, you correctly identify the mistake later in the video.

Great rules overview, except I'm pretty sure you are wrong about exposed alien needing greater strength than dogs. Pg 9 states has to have greater strength than characters. Pg 6 states a character as any player who is not an exposed alien. Also, the bottom left box on pg 9 says if exposed alien is alone with dog they can assimilate or sabotage. Doesn't say anything about strength.

It’s not entirely clear whether there is at least one single reason for a character NOT to get into a helicopter or snowmobile if there is already someone there? What could stop him from staying at the station and not escaping with the others? If the character is a person and is sure that there are definitely people in the vehicle, there is no point in him staying at the station and losing. And if he believes that there is someone on board who is definitely infected, then there is also no point in staying, because ‘The Thing’ is already winning anyway. Well, if the character is ‘The Thing’, he also still needs to get into the transport as soon as possible and escape for the sake of victory.

Ok.... I know I'm going to get a ration of crap by asking this question.....and I suppose it can be a house rule....but why does there have to be a "Thing" chosen at the start of the game....why not let the dog encounters randomly select "The Thing"....this is how it got started on the movie by the dog?......you can say someone will get picked at the beginning, but don't put the infection chip in. This would seriously amp up a false paranoia and suspicion right from the get go

It's a horrible Euro style game with terrible rules. Very disappointing.
