U.S. Marine Corps' Marine Fighter Attack Training Squadron (VMFAT) 501 and 502 trains new F-35B Lightning II fighter aircraft pilots for the U.S. Marine Corps, Royal Air Force/Royal Navy, Italian Navy, and Japan Air Self-Defense Force.
This training is focused on teaching pilots how to perform short take-off and vertical landing (STOVL) operations on the F-35B.
VMFAT-501 is based at Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, South Carolina, and VMFAT-502 is based at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, California.
