You can start with a rhetorical question if your doing persuasive if not you can right a fact about your essay for example did you know then right what you know

Try to think of something that might surprise the person who is reading. That can be your hook. The hook is not actually going to be what you're writing about--it's just a way to tease attention. Then you write some sentences that talk about your topic, but without giving away what YOU really want to say about it. Finally, you write in just one sentence what your main thing that you want to say is--often you can add parts of the sentence that point to the parts of your essay (paragraphs) that follow.

I'm learning to write introductions also, but in my opinion, the only way to know how to write this is to read others people's writing. For example, articles in news papers, books, magazines and online blogs/articles .ect. Research your favourite topic and read up about it. Take notice of how the writer links their paragraphs, how the paragraphs refer to the introduction and how the conclusion refers to the paragraphs which discuss the main points the writer is making in their introduction and discussed further in the body of the writing (the paragraphs which come after the introduction and before the conclusion). This is the only way I think I'm gonna learn how to do this as there isn't any examples about that I know of.

You present your information well, however, the "Hook" is not really the best way to start an introduction. The amount of time it could take to make something "interesting". What if you can't think of something interesting? The Task will have information and the question. The best way, in my opinion is; Background statement (Paraphrasing), Thesis statement, and Outline statement. This shows you understand the question, you have an opinion (if required), and you know what you will cover. Three steps for an introduction. Great video, thanks.

Britney walker, can you please make a video for conclusion paragraphs? It’ll be very informative and help me through atar. If you haven’t made it because of the fact that your first video was 100k views and your second video was only 10k views I suggest taking advantage of the video description by linking your second video to the first. In future reference it’s best to really point out in videos that you are making a part 2 or 3. I am not stating that you didn’t make a part 3 because of viewership loss as it could be a personal reason, all I’m saying is I would really love to see a part 3!.

The only argument I have with this video is the rejection of "In this essay, I will talk about..." in an introduction. It is standard practice in any advanced or academic writing to write just such a statement. You see it all the time in academia. I mandate as part of the intros my students write. It helps students actually figure out what it is they are going to be doing in their essay.

@@ragavanarivazhagan4784 I disagree. It seems to sort of skip a generation. High school teachers reject it as "middle school," and then scholars in their field use it all the time.

@@martinconte3101 Yes, but how is "today I'm going to be talking about" going to draw in the reader? They might as well read someone else's piece of writing. I feel like the whole motive of the introduction is to make YOUR essay stand out, and I don't think using that will. Let me know your thoughts about this.

@@ragavanarivazhagan4784 Interesting thoughts. I usually invite the students to make their "In this essay" statement at the end of their introduction, to state their purposes in the writing. That's generally where I see it in academic writing. They're free to write an engaging "hook" at the beginning of the essay, as long as they make clear their intentions and their purposes for the essay. I think what we're discussing here is writing for different contexts. If I'm trying to prep my students for the sort of writing they'll be expected to do at the college level, then I give them essay assignments and use this sort of format. I don't think it's the responsibility of the writer of an academic article to draw in the reader with flashy or stand-out language, but rather with an interesting idea or argument (something we spend much more time on). Not that academic writing needs to be stuffy or boring, but if someone's there at your article, it's because they're intrigued by your perspective, not because they got roped in by your opening line. However, if I'm working with students on writing that is meant to engage and capture readers, then I'll usually give them a different kind of assignment than the formal "analytical" or investigative essay. Does that make sense?
