The Blues Shuffle is the first bass line I learned, and the first one I teach my students. It can be played easily in any key and sounds good at fast, medium and slow tempos, making it one of the most versatile left hand patterns around! A MUST for any aspiring blues or boogie pianist.
I have also heard this left hand called the "chop" recently, although I am not sure where that started. Growing up we always called it the blues shuffle and I have never met another musician who called it the chop. (Just FYI)
I demonstrate how to play this left hand in the keys of C, F, G, E, A, B, Eb, Bb (0:08)
And then show how it will sound in the context of a song (2:06)

Perhaps the most universal left hand in blues in my opinion. A bass pattern that will stick with you a lifetime and it usually always sound good whenever applicable. Also creates a basic element for learning more advanced bass patterns or variations.

This is the left hand pattern I play whenever a bass player joins for the jam. It does sound great. And the song at 2:06 reminded me of "When It Rains, It Really Pours", which was recorded by Elvis Presley. Great video! Greetings from Brazil.

It is so cool to hear this. I recently bought the book. I read that chapter and played that pattern. But I haven’t gotten any farther than that yet 😀 I need to find an easy song that uses that left hand pattern so I can practice it in context.

Thanks Rick! Each lick chapter has a transcription of how to put the lick with this left hand (found in part 1 of each lick). I would learn how to play the first 3 licks with that left hand first before learning a song. Then learn Chicken Shack as the first song. It also uses this left hand.

Is it OK to use your Thumb for the V and VI instead of using Second Finger and Thumb ?
@thearthurmigliazza

If you are starting out and don’t already know it, then I highly recommend this fingering. If you are already comfortable with the thumb covering both then no need to change it.

I actually find it hard to play the two baseline notes (1st & 5th, 1st & 6th) at the same time when swapping between index and thumb. One note hits before the other and I struggle to have both at the same time. Have you got any tips on how to achieve this?
@thearthurmigliazza
@thearthurmigliazza 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, just good old fashioned practice concentrating on getting them both to come down at the same time. No one can do it at first (play two notes simultaneously). Maybe some people practiced when they were young and don’t remember but it takes practice. Do it every day (literally) for 20 min and let me know in a week if you are still having trouble.

@joseph_marlinmusic
@joseph_marlinmusic Жыл бұрын
I’ve been having a similar issue as well and I think I’ve made a habit of it without noticing. The two 5ths are not an issue but with the 6ths I tend to hit the 6th note twice, rather than playing simultaneously with the tonic note (in this case the C). I know I’m doing it and I can prevent but as soon as a bring 2 hands together my left hand naturally does it. I think it’s because my pinky is weaker so it’s difficult to keep it for a solid 4 beats. I’m worried I’ve trained by fingers to do the wrong thing! I think I’m going to need to slow down and practice again.
Do you know this extremely versatile bassline?
