We all love doing our part for the environment and composting is something I’ve been getting into for a while now, and I’m so excited to finally use the composter my mom got me for the holidays. Be warned, I’m no expert… but I have watched like 523 videos on composting on KZfaq, so I’m feeling good about this! It’s all a learning experience at the end of the day. Have you tried composting? This is so interesting! I've always wanted to start composting but I was also really hesitant too cause it seemed really hard to understand. But now I think I will! You did a good job of making the tips and instructions really concise and I like that!

My father use to garden all his life, but never seen him composting. He, as Italian, was dumping the residue outside at the same place and when it was a huge pile, he shovel some to use on his garden. And that's about it. On the other way, i make a garden just to supply a little on shopping. I will probably composting this year.

I love how as a new home gardener I came across such a useful video from a literal movie star. Lots of good info here! Especially the focus on mixing green and brown compost matter. Mixing them is so important in my 3 years of experience! Side note. I absolutely loved your version of Black Sheep in Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World! I also love Metric but think you pulled it off better. Don't tell Emily!

I built a Hugelkultur garden with a french drain on one end and a 6" composting pipe on the other end. I layer it with brown and green. I think It was a lot of work, but it was totally worth it when I was harvesting hundreds of tomatoes over the summer!

What did you do with the compost tea with the composter you used? I use 2x brown material portion on my compost and it produce a lot of compost tea (water from veggies & fruits). I used different compost bin though.

Hi Brie, I started composting a few years ago. It started when my neighbour gave me a load of old teabags which she told me can be used to make compost. Later, I bought myself a big green compost bin and took it from there. Now, any fruit and vegetable peelings, grass cuttings etc get composted down. I find that adding cola to the mix is speeds up the process, as it's a good source of sugar (whichever bacteria like) and phosphates. Anyway, thanks for your video.

That looks like a good composting bin. We've just got a compost pile we turn over, but that looks way more convenient. Maybe next year, I'll pick up one like that. The other thing I've been looking at is vermicomposting, which seems gross, but the gardening channels I watch seem to produce the best compost from it.

Growing up in Mexico I know all about this . There was a huge city project that started around 2012 and it solved the problem of trash in the city. Also we used this technique in our ranch as well .

My friend has been composting for years, it's actually quite common where I live. They have a really big one right in the garden and I find it super interesting that you can actually feel that it is warm and that there is something going on there even though it almost looks like a normal pile of soil and dirt.

This brings me back to my old elementary days back in the Philippines when we had an agriculture class, composting was one of our lessons alongside growing stuff in our old school's "backyard" garden classrooms. The stuff we used as compost got used the next grade for growing veggies - mainly eggplants, tomatoes, potatoes, etc.,. Depending on assignments/lessons; we'd do farm work, or fisheries. We obviously couldn't do livestock bigger than chickens due to the fact that our school was smack dab in the middle of the large metropolitan city, but the "essentials" were there. The composting you've done is perfect for urban gardening on small plots, whereas we actually had 2 or 3 large pits big enough to fill a decently sized area. Very well done!

Little tip you can use eggshells, nails or bones it's a very good fertilizer for your plants

Love this! I was intimidated before but this makes sense! For now I get my compost picked up through Compost Crew, and then I can throw in anything I want without worrying about the balance. Only costs a few dollars a month.

you can also add a little bit of soil from your yard into the compost bin to get it started, if you don't have access to or want to purchase compost starter. It's the microbes that breaks the materials down and they're ubiquitous in soil :)

I started composting at the end of last summer! Some helpful tips... if it comes from the earth you can put it back into the earth, as long as it's not processed or meat or dairy. You can also add egg shells if you rinse them off before. Be careful with adding paper or cardboard, some have bits of plastic in it. Egg cartons and coffee grounds are great to use as browns. Good luck and have fun!!! 🥰

Composting is oddly fun! Just a heads up coffee grounds are considered a green, since they're high in nitrogen, and don't worry about rinsing your egg shells just throw them in!

I made real big compost pits all my life im 40 an lived in Norco CA there was tons of cows here until about 20 years age but i had a big hill on turn it with pitch forks when it would be time cover top with some dirt water if need would make enough for 1000 plants every year..
