Transcript:
Hi and welcome back. In this
video, I’m going to teach you one
simple trick that you can use to
become a fluent English speaker
by spending just 10 minutes a
day. The best part about this is
that you don’t need a partner -
you can do this by yourself. This
is a technique that has worked
for many of my students and if
you do what I tell you in this
video, I guarantee that you will
become more fluent in English. So
what is this trick? Well, it’s a
technique known as JAM. Uh, no,
not that kind of jam. This is
actually a little fluency game
based on a show that airs on BBC
radio. The reason it’s called JAM
is because it’s short for Just A
Minute. This game has three
stages. So here’s how you play
it: You’re going to talk about a
topic for one minute. That is,
you’re going to give a speech
without any preparation. So you
just pick a topic - you can
either take general topics like
sports, hobbies, friends, books
etc. or you can choose a
question. For example, what is
your favorite mode of transport?
And once you have a topic, you
speak. Now when you do, there are
some rules: The first rule is
that you cannot stop speaking.
You must talk for the full
minute. If you have to pause to
catch your breath, it’s OK, but
you cannot pause for more than
three seconds. Even if you say
nonsense or you say something
unrelated to the topic it doesn’t
matter. You’re just going to keep
talking. So that’s rule number
one. Rule number two is you
cannot repeat the same ideas.
That means you can’t just say the
same things over and over and
over again - this isn’t
pronunciation practice - it’s
fluency development, so no
repetition of the same ideas. And
rule number three is no writing -
you cannot make any notes while
you are speaking, you must only
concentrate on speaking. These
are just the three rules. So to
begin, you need a timer, this can
be on your smartphone for
example. You start stage one by
starting the timer and you speak
until the one minute is reached.
I’m going to give you an example
of how to do this. I’m going to
take this question: “What is your
favorite mode of transport?” and
I’m going to speak for a minute
on this topic. Now I haven’t done
any preparation, so let’s see how
I do. OK, so what’s my favorite
mode of transport? I would have
to say that it’s the train.
That’s because um, actually, you
get to see a lot of nice scenery,
beautiful landscapes and things
like that. And you know, train
journeys generally tend to be
longer than other types of, or
rather, other modes of transport.
You can see I’m really struggling
for ideas but I can’t stop, I
have to keep going so I’m saying
whatever comes to mind, that’s no
problem. But back to the topic at
hand, yeah, train journeys
because they’re longer, they’re
more relaxing. And one last thing
I want to mention is that I’ve
had the opportunity to meet
interesting people and make
friends on many train journeys.
As a kid I used to ride the train
a lot with my family. We used to
go to lots of places by train and
it’s actually something that I
really enjoyed. Phew! That was
hard. But that’s OK. That’s the
whole point of this exercise.
That was stage one. Now we’re
going to move on to stage two.
Here’s where we’re really going
to start building our fluency.
The first part of stage two is
making notes - so you can use a
paper and pen now. And you’re
going to think back to the speech
that you just gave, and collect
ideas you came up with. In my
speech, I remember that I had
three ideas: The first was that
on train journeys, you get to see
a lot of beautiful scenery. The
second idea was that train
journeys are longer, so they’re
more relaxing. The third idea was
that you get to meet interesting
people and make friends. So once
you have these ideas down, you’re
going to repeat the exercise.
That means, you’re going to set
your timer for one minute and
you’re going to speak again on
the same topic, but now, you can
use your notes to guide you. You
will notice that this time, you
are actually able to speak more
fluently because you have some
good ideas on paper, and you will
be able to expand on your ideas
and give more information. Once
the timer hits one minute, you
stop. And we move on to stage
three. Just like in stage two,
you’re going to go to paper and
pen, but this time, you’re going
to add more ideas to your notes
based on your second speech. I
added some ideas like this. So
now - for one final time, you’re
going to speak again. This is
your final speech. So you set
your timer for one minute, you
use your notes and speak. I’m
going to give you my final speech
based on my notes so you can see
the difference.

Watched this in 2017, this video had helped me to speak English fluently in a very short time! Now I'm fluent, confident and almost can speak in native accent (British)! People often get confused when I talk because they think I was born in the UK but when they get to know that I wasn't born in the UK, they get surprised :D I'm suggesting everyone this video whenever they ask me about how they can quickly learn to speak in English. I highly recommend it!

JAM: Just A Minute Talk about a topic for a minute. Ex: sports, hobbies, friends, books, etc. "What is your favorite mode of transport? Stage 1: Rules: 1- Must keep talking for a full minute. (no pauses longer than 3 seconds) 2- No repetition of ideas. 3- No writing or making notes. start your timer and begin speaking. Stage 2: Collect ideas from the speech that you delivered. Now talk about the same topic again for 1 minute using your notes. Stage 3: Add more ideas on your notes based on your second speech. Now talk for a minute using your notes. Bounce Stage: Record yourself. Once you have the third speech, give your speech again , but now by recording yourself. This is important for two reasons: 1- You can identify what areas you need to improve. 2- Keep your recordings and listen weeks or months later to check improvement.

You are the best English teacher I have ever met online, and I have chosen your channel and lessons in my journey to learn English grammar. I am an immigrant American citizen; however, my grammar is not good because my brain needs to be re-trained or modified to renew the foul English language I have learned from my previous country of origin. So my brain needs an overhaul job! I have listened to many KZfaq English teachers, but you are the best! In the beginning, I always prefer to have a native speaker American or British English teacher for obvious reasons, but to my dismay, I have never learned from them. YOUR STYLE IS DIFFERENT; YOU ARE VERY CLEAR AND ON POINT. I decided to stick with your channel because too many teachers are often confusing. Different teachers always have different teaching styles, and styling is fundamental or critical to people like me. You got me right on point when it comes to your styling in teaching! Thank you, Sir! I thank you from the bottom of my heart! Finally, my English grammar has improved!

The most important thing I can tell you is KEEP doing exercises and reviewing the mistakes you made (for reading/listening/writing section). Also, prepare tons of materials in your mind and form a 'chained logic' , so that you can keep talking smoothly.

An inspiration, a self-guided way to be spontaneous, inventive, & using improvisation. Why important? Language is creativity in using crucial time (the moment) & able to stage for yourself a skit or mini-play for dialogue with an English speaker. The pressure of hat to say & ho to say it is reduced or eliminated. Thank you for this amazing technique that has to be effective. Self-monitoring & self-evaluating as a way to improve with certain fluency. Bravo, Sir.

What a great technique! EFL students need to build an environment around them where they're constantly getting a chance to be exposed to the language they're trying to learn, so listening to music, wathing movies, etc will certainly improve their listening skills whereas a daily dose of JAM (no pun intended) will do wonders as far as speaking skills and confidence are concerned! Kudos, once again, to the Learn English Lab! Just perfect!

Thanks for your videos we speak five languages in between my family, German, Polish, English Russian, Spanish and puff, is funny to have arguments as we start to mix and express frustrations in different languages. Your videos help my family, here in Germany they teach many classes only in English and had to mention to the English teacher that (mom) is for American English and (mum) is for British, she fail my son for that word saying was incorrect when asked why she answered, well we teaching British English here! I let it go with that and walked away, but she got the point. My son is number one of his class in English. Thanks for your teaching.

Thank you so much for these tips. Will definitely do these all. I started watching video tips in improving english skills just this week. Last week i didnt got a job beacuse i failed in the exam where they measure your english skills. I got a little bit disappointed to myself and felt diacourage to apply in other companies afraid that i might fail again. But later i realized that i should keep going and do something to improve myself. My communication skills in english has been my weakness and the reason why i didn't have any confidence to myself eversince.I never posted or put comments on my personal socmed accts in english. I usaully just keep my thoughts to myself whenever people around me speak in english. I dont have any confidence to speak up and afraid that i might just say something wrong or that my grammar might be awful. Especially here in our country where most people measures someones intelligence on their capability to speak in english. Hope that by being comitted into following all these tips that ive seen i can someday speak confidently and express or write a comment of my opinions on different platforms with wider audiences in the future

I had retained my english only in writing these past 9 years after i had left my schooling days and got into a hindi speaking world... but now i am moving forward because u taught me the simple way to get back that clarity while speaking about any topic... Now the Vivas that i attend to has become more easier and the scores have risen... Had seen this video few months back..

Thank you. This is a brilliant idea. I also find video record yourself talking is a better way to improve your speech. After done recording, watch yourself speak, notice not only your words but also your intonation, expression and gesture, see where you can improve. First time, you may cringe at your own voice, but youll get used to it and slowly build confidence in your style of talking. This setting is more like speaking to a real person, and you gain more than just talking things in your mind.

Howdy Sir ! Your english method is really original, neat and efficient it's the least I can say ! I 'm an english self- taught man who teaches English and Italian since 1995 and it's the very very first time that I can hear someone making himself understood so clearly about a realistic And reachable way to speak English correctly and fluently and I know what I'm talking about. I was born in France and here your smart idea, tips, tricks and hints would be welcome because here the English level is so low ( a catastrophy ! ) What I really like about this lesson I 've watched a while ago is there's no unuseful blah-blah-blah like some English teachers do. You go straight to the point instead of going into some useless details. On top of that your accent or phonetics are perfect. I was so interested at the very first sight on watching your lesson that I couldn't help myself to subscribe. You're really doing a great job for the Shakespeare's language and I'm sincere. Eddie Antonio. Nb: When you said " try to learn 10 minutes a day everyday made me think of my own English teaching ! ", it's been 20 years I repeat that to my students, only once in a while some become fluent on account of their own WILL, this very last word is the key, the crux, the main reason to go further on becoming "one fine day" fluent or more " bilingual". Big thanks.
