Learner makes a critical roundabout error - driving mock test

We're at Belvedere driving test centre with Harry for a driving mock test. Harry made a critical roundabout error but his driving was actually fantastic. Francis Noakes is the driving instructor and gives you a commentary all the way through so you can learn from Harry and pass your driving test without making the same driving mistakes.

I talked all the way through my test to calm my nerves like “peep and creep” “new road new mirrors” “mirror signal manoeuvre” everything I was doing, I spoke. I apologised to the examiner halfway through and he said it was good to hear me speak through it as it showed I knew what I was doing. My examiner was amazing and I actually enjoyed my drive. Passed first time with 1 minor. Good luck for the test Harry x

K1's gaming Ofc brother: My biggest one is: Plan ahead on the test /when driving in general. Don’t just concentrate on what’s right in front on you, look ahead often & plan how you will react. You are much less likely to make mistakes. Eg. You see a car slowing down ahead? Start to decrease your speed gradually. You can then select 2nd gear & might not have to even stop, making things easier & smoother. Planning ahead also makes junctions, roundabouts, etc way easier because you have less things to do when u finally reach them. So you can just concentrate on whether it’s safe to go or not. Hope that helps!

Always exciting to see a new mock test from Francis(best mock videos on KZfaq), even though I passed my test in December We've waited far too long. 😅 It's also interesting to see belvedere on the small screen. I went to school there years ago and I have heard horrible things about the test centre and their low pass rates, but honestly, the route doesn't seem too bad to me. I took my test in Hither Green btw

7:11 Seemed a bit too close to the junction to be considered a "safe place". Highway Code Rule 243: Do not stop or park opposite or within 10 metres of a junction.

20:09 Definitely not but I would love to learn here. There's a lack of roundabouts/dual carriageways and country roads where I learn.

@@K1scarcrazy thanks ans yeah what Ben said, just think that you have gotten a different instructor bc your old one was bad, just think you're on a lesson, if you think you messed up don't worry just keep going, it goes really quick

On the roundabout at 11:32, if you assume the left lane goes left and straight, then shouldn’t you pretend theres three lanes inside the roundabout? Therefore it would be better to not stick to the outside in case there was a car on the left lane taking the second exit?

Correct. The way he said it was a bit strange, but the gist was about not straight-lining, and how it's easier to "keep to the outside" if you start in the left lane. But you're right he did imply that you should keep to the left if you start in the middle, which can be correct, but it did look like there was enough space for three lanes on this roundabout as you said. Also you'd expect if you start in lane two that you'd exit in lane two, however in this case both the car in front and the van behind started in lane three but exited in lane two, so you'd be needlessly cutting them up anyway, even if you did stick to lane two the entire time. I suppose the fact that on approach lane one splits into lane one and two and lane two becomes lane three is more indicative that lane one is generally going to be left only and lane two and three are going to be straight on. Whereas if it's lane two that splits it's usually lane one and two that'll be straight on. Basically it's something you get better at doing and figuring out what other people will do with experience.

@@jg.1510 As I was trying to explain above, it's debatable. But definitely don't change lanes, even if there are no road markings, without checking behind, mirrors and blindspot if necessary. He could have stayed in lane two the entire time, which would have still gotten in the way of the van exiting, so not ideal. Or better yet, checked behind, seen lane one was empty and moved over whilst on the roundabout. Or even more better, started in lane one to begin with.

Really can’t fathom how lucky learners in London are and why on Earth they stall there…I live in Edinburgh which is built on such steep hills you even can’t see ahead. Up and down up and down. You guys don’t know how lucky you are with those roads and you get praised for not stalling on a straight road 💀

@@DrivingSchoolTV yes! Learned and passed the first time here! Stalling was always on the back of my head when I had to go up the hill and stop for traffic but I never did. When you learn in Edinburgh you have a crazy clutch control, which I am grateful for in the end :D
